Baby elephant killed at Memphis zoo

We are zoo members, and when I got an email about this last night, I found it very upsetting:

Apparently the mother accidentally gored the baby with her tusks while trying to help it after a stumble yesterday morning.

It took seven years of monitoring hormone levels and five artificial insemination attempts before Asali conceived.

She was pregnant for 22 months. After the birth, she was nurturing and the calf had begun to nurse.

Aww, poor thing. It sounds like they're handling things the best way they can, though.

That's sad. And after all the time and energy put into getting her pregnant. I know the handlers feel awful and the poor Mama elephant.

This is such sad news. I hadn't heard about the baby's birth and now just 2 days later the poor thing is gone - after they worked so hard to get her pregnant and then for the mom to be pregnant almost 2 years - just breaks my heart.
