Hi, Can someone point me in the right direction? I remember reading about a carrier that put the baby's weight on your hips. Someone had posted a website. Please help. :teeth:
Or do you also reccommend another one? My DD will be almost 13 months. She weighs about 19lbs. ::yes::

I think this is the one you mean

http://www.mommysthinkin.com/hip_hammock.htm

or any kind of ring sling, or pouch sling (like a maya wrap) would work.

Some sort of carrier is definitely an essential at 13 months, because even if she can walk, she won't be up to standing/walking for any great length of time,

I don't know if this is what you're looking for. I posted it a while back.

It's a great carrier. I justed used it during our San Deigo/DL trip. DD is a small 4 yo (37"/29lb) and still fits in it. We was sort of sleeping when we landed so I took her out of her car seat and put her in this. She was able to go back to sleep and it allowed me to use both hands to help DH with luggage etc.

I got my slings from http://www.parentingconcepts.com. Ask them about clearance slings. They don't advertise them, but sometimes have them.

If I had it to do over again I might look closer at the Maya wrap slings. I've seen them on people, but have no idea where you'd get them.

you get them from http://www.mayawrap.com/ I have one that is very similiar to a Maya wrap but made by a WAHM in the UK. I really like the pouch style, it's very comfortable to wear and very easy to use. The ring one is also supposed to be comfy and easy but I seem to struggle with it somewhat.

There are some excellent videos here http://www.mayawrap.com/video/videomw.shtml

which really help you to use these slings correctly.

I am not familiar with the carrier you described.

However, if you are using a traditional type sling that goes over your shoulder, do not wear on your hip.

To minimize strain on your shoulders and back, baby's bottom should always be above your navel. A sling will naturally put your child on one-side of you, not dead center. This makes it easy to walk, write, etc.

That said, we would never travel to a park without a sling, Baby will be so much happier at days end than being in a stroller. But don't forget to pack a hat!

I used a hip hammock (www.hiphammock.com) when I went to disney with my 13 month old last dec. I took a stroller, but my 5 year old wanted to ride in it so I just used the hip hammock that I had brought along (which was fine with my ds since he hates the stroller). It was nice to use especially in the magic kingdom since everything is close together. I could get on the rides with my ds still in the hip carrier. I just sat with him straddling my hip. It was useful to us, but after a couple of hours of walking around with your child in the hip carrier, you will be ready to put them in a stroller or at least let someone else take a turn with the hip carrier!!

Someone recommended a carrier by TommeeTippee sold on Babyant.com, and Baby Universe.com It is less expensive ($25-$29) than that "hip hammock" version. It seemed more compact for travel, and rolls down to wear around your waist when not in use.
I plan on buying this for our trip in Feb. to use with my 15mo. I also am bringing a double stroller for my 3yr. old and 15mo (when she may get tired of being the the carrier, and enjoy a ride).

Huge fan of the Maya Wrap here! Used it through three kids (both of my own & on daycare baby) and loved it. If you haven't used a sling before, I would recommend getting the video that goes with it. www.mayawrap.com

I also meant to say that the maya wrap is great for the age of yor little one. I used mine till the kids were well past two year old. I prefer the ring style over the pouch. First, I like the adjustability, and second I like the versatility. My sling has been used for everything -- open it up and spread it across a dirty bench before sitting down, wrap it around a cold child in a stroller, discreetly nurse a child in a sling, the list goes on & on.

Just returned from our week at Disney and had ordered the Ultra EZ hip carrier from onestepahead.com. Loved it!!! Very easy to get on/off. DS is 18mo and about 29 pounds. He fell asleep in it several times. He's at the age where he frequently does not want to be held and will fight to get down but he never felt like was being 'held' in this and was completely content in it. It has a strap around the waist and one up and around the shoulder. When it was time to get onto the ride we would unsnap the shoulder strap to sit him in the ride with us or if he was sleeping he could stay in the sling when we sat in the ride. So glad I had this!!!

eeek...no one mentioned a bjorn. I'm taking an 8 month old at the end of Feb. & was planning on using the bjorn. I do have a sling somewhere too....but when she never caught on to it as a newborn...I gave up & haven't tried her in it since. She may actually like it now...who knows.

I do know how inconvenient it is to get her in & out of the bjorn...& it does hurt my back...

Does anyone know if the ones above are really that much better? It would be worth $30 to me to save my sanity for our trip. :D

Thanks for any help that you could offer.

are really great for long days at disney. i wore my daughter for hours at a time on our 7 day trip. the hug a bub was wonderful bc it wraps around your body. you can see a pic of me in it at epcot at www.fairuzasball.com you can wear a baby comfortably to up to around 35lbs.....we had brought her stroller but only used it to carry our packages or to put her in it when we did babyswap. i encourage you to check it out. it was much easier on my body than the mayawrap. i brought my sling with us but didn't even unpack it. wraps are the way to go...esp with a baby around 19lbs....my daughter is 15lbs & i wear her almost everyday. it's easy to "pop" her in & out....and it doesn't hurt my shoulders (complaint with bjorn).

i actually got addicted to wraps because of our trip to WDW...mollie was 7wks old & i didn't know HOW i was going to carry her and chase 2 other kids around. the wrap let me do it hands free!
good luck

I always used the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder. My colicky ds lived in it LOL . It is bulkier, but the padding on the shoulder felt very good to me (I also like the padding around my little one's chunky thighs :D ). I have a Maya, but never found it to be as comfortable (although I know lots of people who love theirs). I would say that your little one is getting a little big for a Bjorn, we used one for our first (before I discovered the delights of a sling), but as they get bigger, they just get too heavy for your back - they can also relax, sleep better in the sling.

I also agree with the mom who said she used her sling for everything - it's amazing what you can use it for in a pinch.

You'll have a great time with your baby being so close to you and so will your little one ::yes:: .

Thanks for all the responses (sorry it took me so long to respond).

I appreciate the advice. I'm off to find something different than a bjorn. I will take a look at everything listed in here. THANKS! eeek...I'm glad I asked.

I've never used a Bjorn carrier, but my sil had to stop using hers quite soon as my nephew was just too heavy for her by the time he got to six months.

I had a Baby Trekker carrier (a Canadian one) which can be used as a front or back carrier from birth until the child is 3 years. I can still carry my 2 year old in it, although not for a very long time, but then he is large and chunky and I'm only 5'2". Still, it is very comfortable and the weight is distributed nicely.

It isn't the easiest one to take on and off, but it is very comfortable to wear and due to its design I can also use it to harness ds to a dining chair if we go somewhere without highchairs.

It's worth considering - www.babytrekker.co.uk
