I like the idea of the corndog coming back next year, but only as part of a nice gift. I'll mention it to the guy who was (un)lucky enough to take it home!
my sister does a $20 limit gift exchange at her Christmas party and its a good mix of gag gifts and real gifts.... One year though, the elderly neighbor recieved a vibrator ... When she asked everyone what it was...nobody had the heart to tell her---just that it was a "back massager".... !! ha!!
My guess is the person who brought the air freshener thought it was a White Elephant Gift Exchange. I did one of those a few years ago when I was in college. The gifts were pathetic, but that was the point. It was hilarious!
I know what you mean. One year DDs best friend got a 10-lb can of dried raisins from somebody's Y2K pantry. the thing was, this girl LOVES raisins and she was in hog heaven! The same year, DS snagged a 6ft tall Bugs Bunny and gave it to his little sister for Christmas. She LOVED it. So even Dirty Santa gifts can be kinda fun.
Though it doesn't sound like the corndog freshener was good. I would have been pretty mad and disappointed if I got that gift. And if I saw a friend get it, I would have shared my gift with them. It wasn't fair.
Yep! That's exactly what it looked like! I didn't realize it actually smells like mustard! That's pretty gross!
I felt bad for the guy who got it because he's a wonderfully generous person and had a tough year. He's been out of work for a year and he lost his beloved 17 year old dog. He didn't even tell anyone about the dog because he was afraid he'd start crying if he mentioned it. So he waited several months and got a new dog and then started telling people that he lost his old friend. Kinda stinks that he got such a lousy gift this year. But his birthday is coming up so DH and I be sure to take good care of him!
They did a gift exchange at my mom's work and the CEO brought a can of SPAM. He thought it was the funniest thing. Nobody else did after they all followed the rules and brought a gift for $20.
The returning gift is always fun. People were encouraging me to do that with the picture I got (I was just going to shred the pic and use the frame, but like I said, it was stolen from me- thank God!) There were several amusing gifts at the exchange that were returners. It does make for a good laugh year after year.
What a rip off! If they didn't really want to participate, they shouldn't have.
I love how our family does our gift exchange....we do the "stealing" but all presents stay wrapped until the very end! No one knows what they will get.
Ok, I have to say something here. You are the second person/group I've ever heard of doing this. The first time was at a bridal shower I went to and they did this as one of the games for the guests. It bombed, big time.
Only two people (out of about 20) decided to steal gifts, and one of those only did it because it was so awkward with no one else exchanging gifts.
I personally love those gifts, like the corn dog air freshener, and so do our group of friends. It's funny and fun when that happens. We always have a gift exchange and it's a mix of bad/good/and booze. There's stuff to fight over, and there's the horrible things. It's fun for everyone, honestly, but they know what they're getting in to when they come. There's only one friend who doesn't appreciate the 'terrible' gifts. Of course, then she gets the worst one every year. This year she got the plastic reindeer with the brown jelly bean 'poop'.
I got a three wick candle. Whatever. I think the pooping reindeer was great , just like the corn dog was great. Why? conversation! Who's going to talk about and remember a three wick candle? no one. Who's going to talk about the corn dog air freshener for years to come? EVERYONE. That, is a great gift right there.
