Avoiding toll fees on rental car

We are renting a car from Dollar (Holiday Inn Lake Buena Vista) for a day to pick up a friend at the airport (she's not actually staying at WDW, so no ME), grocery shopping, and a day of Orlando stuff before returning it to the same Dollar.

I'm concerned about what I've read on the sunpass and extra fees with tolls? I know I will hit a toll going to pick her up at the airport on 417 and coming back, is that all automated now or can I just decline the rental agencies toll stuff and pay cash on my own when I hit the tolls?

Thanks!

Ok, wow. This board is amazing! I just found the $35 Alamo coupon and can rent from Alamo for the whopping price of $6.43!! I have no idea if Alamo offers transport (I will be at Pop that morning, not sure how to get to Alamo to get the car) but I can't pass up renting a car for 6$! Also, anyone know about Alamo's toll fees?

You can pay cash at the tolls (I brought singles and quarters so I would have exact change). In order to go through the pay tolls you have to stay to the right, it almost feels like you are exiting the highway.

Check the rental contract before you sign it to find the spaces to initial to decline (or accept) the various options including daily toll convenience fees. Then check the total on the reprint to be sure your selections "took" in the system.

Look for and use the cash lanes at the toll areas and wait in line to get a receipt whenever possible.

In some cases you must go down what looks like an exit ramp to pay cash.

On some rental cars you have to flip off a switch on a windshield box (toll transponder).

Should you find yourself in a malfunctioning exact change booth, get the toll authority address (via laptop, smartphone, or possibly posted on the booth wall) and mail in a payment within 48 hours.

Alamo is the official car rental company of WDW, and provides transportation if you're renting at the Car Care Center. Call the day before to schedule a pickup at the resort.

for Alamo:

$3.95 fee per usage day (24 hr. interval) that customer incurs tolls, plus tolls (at posted cash/TOLL-BY-PLATE rates)

Participation is automatic.

Opt-in decision is made when the driver elects to use EXPRESS, SunPass ONLY, E-PASS ONLY or LeeWay ONLY lanes.

Nothing to decide at time of rental.

Are you getting the car at the Car Care Center? If so, yes they have transportation. I generally google "WDW car care center" to get the pertinent info for it.

I just pay cash. Take about 10 ones and a roll of quarters, keep it all handy in my purse while driving, and watch for those (IMO very obvious) toll signs and follow the Cash signs.

We had an economy car from Dollar last Oct. We paid the tolls from MCO to Board Walk but on the way back we were stopped at the booth as I scrounged for quarters the attendant told me we had the pass, we could go! I didn't know it or pay for it.

Where did you find the Alamo coupon? We are renting from them in 12 days (but who's counting ;)), and that would come in handy! Thanks!

I found it here on the transport board, in the April discounts thread! Someone mentioned it's not working now but there is a $25 that is working? Go check the thread out, lots of discount info there! :thumbsup2
