Not sure if this is widely known or not, but if you move rather than cancel a WDW Resort "room only" reservation within five days of your arrival, you are not charged the one night cancellation fee. Normally you are charged a full night's cost as a penalty.

We were supposed to arrive on 12/23, but my mom had too much pain from a cracked tooth (owie!) so we called in on 12/22 to cancel. I thought we would have to pay the one night's fee since we cancelled within 5 days (heck within 24 hours!), but a CM who cancelled our PS said if we moved the date and didn't cancel completely no fee would be assessed. We know we are going next year, so we picked a October 2005 date to move the reservation to and were not assessed the cancellation fee. Once we know my vacation schedule we'll move it again to a known date if the 10/05 date won't work.

I'm not sure what I said to the CM, but I think I asked her if there was any way to avoid the fee or possibly if a dentist's note would suffice as a medical excuse, and she said "If you have another date of travel, that will be considered a modification not a cancellation". She did not offer this information when I first said we needed to cancel: IMHO, I see this to be a general policy, not one specific to our cancellation issue, so hopefully it can help someone else. I am glad I asked her whatever I asked her, that's for sure!

Everything moved over smoothly according to our new hardcopy confirmation - it also updated on the Disney.com website where you set up your travel plans!

Now we have two 2005 trips to make!

:D

Wow - thanks for the great info! We always worry about one of our little ones getting sick in the 48 hours prior. These really gives me some peace of mind!

::yes::

Just to add if you are at WDW and decided to stay somewhere else it applies too. We hade a ressie at SSR and we were moving to Pop to save points (we are dvc members) and we decided to go to the front desk and extend our stay at SSR well they cancelled the Pop ressie and extended our stay at SSR w/o penalty.

This works at most hotel chains where there is a cancellation penalty. If something comes up at the last minute and you don't want to pay the penalty, just move your reservation forward enough so that you can call back (the next day or so) and cancel the moved reservation without penalty.

We we just discussing bad weather delays for our trip 28Jan and I told my husband the worst that would happen is that we would lose one nite's stay. I'm so glad to hear we will have the option of moving it forward if necessary. Thanks.

OP, do you know if you cancel your ressie and you are already holding another ressie for later in the year, can you apply the deposit of the canceled ressie to the other ressie, or do you have to make another NEW ressie.?. (did that sound confusing?)

We found that out when we evacuated for the hurricanes to Disney--we booked to be on the safe side and asked what we could do to not pay cancellation fees should the storm change track--and they shared this information. They even said you could call your resort directly on your arrival day and it would be at their discretion--but they had the same power to "move" your reservation. (We booked a day earlier than we thought we needed and I didn't want to have to use it if it wasn't necessary. It did turn out we needed to use it).

You can move the "cancelled ressie" to overlap the future ressie. Cancel the future ressie--get that refund..and then modify the moved "cancelled" ressie to be the dates you want.

I don't think they can transfer deposits to another ressie when you are within the 5-day window.
