Avoiding the Tolls while Driving to Port Canaveral

So maybe I'm late, but I just thought this through. We're leaving from Atlanta and driving down the night before our cruise in Sept. and this is our first time cruising. I had it mapped out to go through Orlando, but someone told me to Mapquest my route and utilize the option to avoid the tolls. It takes me to the coast, but there are no tolls, saving us some good money. It is only 10 minutes more time, than going through the tolls, too.

I just wanted to pass this little tidbit along for the newbies like me. Save money- Avoid the tolls!

We have always found traffic on I-95 to be much worse with lots of trucks and construction. It has always taken us at least an hour longer than taking the Turnpike to the Beach Line.

By the way how much is the toll coming from MCO to the port. Are there any tolls from the port to WDW?

There is only one toll booth when you leave MCO headed to the port (and you hit the same toll booth on the return). I think it's $1.50 but may be $2.

We're south of ATL and mapquest, set to avoid tolls, going to Orlando first, took us on an insane trek through the backroads once we got off 75 inside FL to get to Orlando and it took us 8.5 hours. Now we just use our Garmin and take the toll roads. I think the tolls were only about $11 each way but much quicker.

I am trying to figure out how we will get to the Country Inn and Suites from the airport so now knowing this about the toll that will help me in doing my planning, not that the toll will be an issue, I just need to make sure to have the money out....I know, I am a planner so this will be put in my memory bank...

I find paying a couple dollars in tolls is priceless when it comes to saving time and traffic....I, personally, would find other ways to budget-cut.

Take 528 east, and follow the road. Once it passes the port and heads south (it becomes A1A, I think), Country Inn and Suites will be on the right side of the road, not far from the cruise terminal.

I think the OP was referring to trying to figure out the method to get to their hotel - rental car, towncar, etc - and trying to factor in all costs.

First thank you NancyIL for the directions, I wrote them down:) Second, poohj80, that is what I am trying to figure out...Since there will be 7 of us, I am looking at many options....thank you both:)

For that many, I would suggest renting a minivan or SUV that will seat 7 one way. There is a Budget and Hertz rental drop off place just down the road from Country Inn and Suites. You could check-in, unload the bags, then one of you return the vehicle and have their shuttle bring you back to the hotel. Keep watching rates as they fluctuate quite a bit.

Not sure with 7 people how many bags you would have and if they would fit in the car with all the seats taken? That may be something to keep in mind if you rent a car is how many bags it will hold.

If it were me I'd find a private transfer with a limo company there are a few out there have heard good things about FL Tours and happy limo. That way I don't have to worry about driving, packing all the bags in the car and can sit back and just relax on the ride to/from the port/airport.

My advice as a local- take the tolls. 95 is a death wish and if you went through the towns it will take you forever. What ever you save in tolls -you waste in gas $$. Think about it. If you say well, it's only 15 more minutes without tolls, well that tank of gas you just wasted going those extra 15 minutes is probably more than the toll.`
