What is the average price for a standard pin at Disneyland? You know, the ones that people trade with each other and cast members?

Well... that's 2 different questions.

Most pins at Disneyland are about $8.95 - $12.95. However, those are NOT the pins most people trade with cast members. There are box sets that have 7 pins for $30, averaging out to just over $4/pin. Those are the pins that I would suggest you buy if trading with CMs. If you have an AP, your discount lowers that a little bit more, too. You can get these at the Emporium, the pin store in Tomorrowland, World of Disney in DtD, and the Pin Trading kiosk in DtD, among other places.

You can also stop by the Disney Character Warehouse (not far from Disneyland) and see if they have any on sale. They are usually $3-$4. Lastly, you can buy pins off of ebay for around $2/pin BUT you risk getting fakes, which some CMs will not accept.

If you have more questions, ask away.

I think they are mostly $6.99 and $8.99, with more detailed pins costing even more than that. I don't recall the price of lanyards as we already had those and weren't looking at them. I bought my kids a bunch of pins from Ebay so they could use those to trade. By buying them in lots, they cost more like $3-4 per pin.

Lanyards are about $5.95, kids lanyards are about $4.95. Pins, if you're buying traders IN the parks you need to buy the boxed sets that Dreams mentioned above. Otherwise you're paying way too much for traders. As Dreams also mentioned you will get a discount if you've got an AP but you also get a discount if you've got a Disney Visa and spend more than $50, you do NOT need to use the Disney Visa to pay tho. Some cashiers will say you do but you do not, you only have to show the card and spend more than $50. I buy pins on ebay and yes, I've received some fakes. We put them aside and don't trade those. I've also purchased pins from mousepinsonline.com, they have good pins at good prices but you will get Pro Pins. Personally I really love some of the Pro Pins I've seen (and traded) but some people absolutely refuse to trade them. CM's will not have an issue with them tho so that's an option for you.

I've bought a couple of lots off of ebay recently that were good, but for our last trip, we ordered pins from www.mousepinsonline.com. We had no problem trading these. The prices were GREAT!!! Grab bags are less than $2 per pin.

Do they still have lanyards and pins at Disney stores? Are they the type we would want to trade around?

Thanks for the tips.

I looked on ebay and found some sellers that look legit based on their feedback. Next question, what does it mean when it says it's from a "Cast Landyard"? Does this mean you can't buy it at the park, but can only trade for it? Does this actually make it more valuable or easier to trade?

I would be careful with the ebay sellers. I have friends who have bought from various ebay sellers that have many positive comments and have had hit and miss experiences with getting fakes. Just a word of caution.

Cast lanyard pins are often called "hidden mickeys." They are pins that are released into the public only through CMs trading them on their lanyards. They are never sold in the shops. I would be very curious how someone has lots of Cast Lanyard pins to sell on ebay.

Hidden mickeys are wanted by most traders, if that is what you mean by "valuable." I always try to educate new traders that "valuable" is what you like. They are easier to trade if you are trading with other traders. If you are trading with CMs, they will take any official Disney pin so it does not matter.

I've made some eBay purchases and left good feedback because unknown to me the pins were fakes. :( There are some eBayers I buy from but only a few. Try the link posted above and also try mousepinsonline.com, they have good prices. Of course they also sell Pro Pins and many individuals won't trade for them in the parks, but the CM's will.

How would I know if I had bought fakes? I bought a small lot on ebay last week from an ebayer with excellent feedback. I received all the pins in very good condition and all were stamped with the Disney logo on back. They seem fine to me. How would I know if I had a fake?

The colors are usually off or the backstamp is incorrect. Sometimes the actual stick pin part is different than it is on "real" pins. It's hard to say without seeing them first. If you wouldn't mind PMing me a link to your auction I will look at the seller and see if I recognize them. :) There are a few sellers who I've received good stuff from.

I pick up lanyards at the Disney outlet or plain ones at other places, and I buy trading pins on Ebay to get started. I do NOT by the cheapo knock-off pins but usually "lots" of misc traders. But to your question, to get started with a starter set, about $25

It is not always easy to tell.

For example, here are two pins that exist in the trading world today.

Similar, yes. And if you were to receive either, you would think it looked legit. However, when you compare them, you can see the difference in skin tone, as well as the eyes and lips. Also, the real pin is 2.5" x 3" while the fake is quite a bit smaller at 2" x 1.5". The authentic pin has a has Disney Auctions logo hologram on the back, while the fake does not.

Example #2:
If I were to receive the pin on the left from an ebay seller, I would think, cute pin!
wet_paint.jpg

Sadly, it is a counterfeit version of the pin on the right.

- background color is wrong
- paint "splats" are the wrong color
- the star in the "T" is more defined in the "real" pin
- Donald's tail feathers are much more defined in the "real" pin
The backstamps, copyright, logo are identical. But, again, unless you see them both, how would you know you bought fakes?

There are countless more examples, sadly. If you are buying from an ebay seller you are always taking a risk. I have friends who have bought from "reputable" sellers, received good pins, bought a 2nd time, received fakes. And as pixiewings illustrated, you can't go by feedback, sadly.

Ask away if you have anymore questions,

Good pics Dreams! :) :thumbsup2 I would also like to add that there were times I left glowing feedback before I knew I had scrappers (or bad pins), since you can't change your feedback it's really hard to tell. Many times I'll ask the sellers very pointed questions, if they can't answer them to my satisfaction I won't buy from them. There are also "fantasy" pins on eBay, I have a few of these myself because I loved the pins BUT you cannot trade them with CM's in the parks. You can try to trade with people in the parks but CM's can't take them as they are not Disney copyrighted. You have to be cautious buying on eBay. Another way I like to check is to check pinpics.com, you can use the search function and type in the pins you see on the eBay sellers page, then see if there are any notes stating that there are fakes. For instance you might see this on eBay and be very excited knowing that this is an extremely hard to find pin

But then you go to pin pics and find this http://www.pinpics.com/cgi-bin/pin.cgi?pin=52619&sid=5439.1232330773
and then you get your pin, look at the back and realize you just paid for a fake pin because the backstamp sure as heck says Disney/Amblin. Then you try to get a refund and paypal denies you....and yes, I left very negative feedback but that's not the point. lol Sometimes on eBay you just don't know......
