Avatarland

Avatar has to be one of the worst movies I've ever had the misfortune of watching. The only thing I'm looking forward to is that it may draw more people away from the good things at AK like the Safari, Lion King and Kali. Then I can get them done in a reasonable time and go to another park. There are lots of things I don't like at DW, I just avoid them. The problem with this one is that there isn't enough in AK in the first place. It's easier to just skip the stuff you don't like when there are lots of other stuff to take up your time.

So what you re saying is..... It was really bad but the good news is lots of people will go to it and make the lines less at other areas of the park?

To your second statement DAK isnt losing anything to add avatar

I really, really hope that Avatar is on the back burner. The purchase of Star Wars has hopefully pushed Avatar aside.

Making an Avatar land would be a huge risk. Sure, the first movie was "popular", in that a lot of people saw it. But, that probably fed itself - people wanted to see the "it" movie that year, from the Titanic guy, etc. Do people love Avatar the way they love Star Wars or any of the Pixar movies, so much so that they would take a trip to WDW to see its land? Doubtful.

Secondly, there's the risk that the 2nd & 3rd movies aren't out yet. If they're bad and they flop, Disney will look ridiculous if they've poured all this money into Avatar Land.

Yes, AK needs something else, I just don't think Avatar is it.

The movie question is more about longevity. Toy Story (Cars and others are in the same boat as Avatar on this aspect) has a fairly well proven track record on the longevity. Avatar (and the other Pixars) has yet to be proven as of yet, but until the sequels come out, the interest has waned quite a bit.

Of course, in the end, a lot about the "land" will depend on how it's presented as well. If it's more about the movie itself, then it'll be beholden to the succes/"failure"* of the sequels. If it's more about the land and message, it very well may be able to stand on it's own (e.g. Splash Mountain, PotC (before the movies), etc).

Some of this will also depend on Cameron himself. Will he work with Disney's timetables and budget, or will he try to extend stuff to get it "just right"?

I'm reserving judgement on the land to see which direction they go. I'm not really a fan of the movie in general (found it rather cliche and nothing special beyond technical CGI stuff), so if it's more about the movie, then I'll spend less time there.

Everybody makes a bad movie every once in a while. And, even though Star Wars is a huge franchise and everyone wants to see a Star Wars park, how many people want to see a Jar Jar Land? If you build based on what Cameron has in mind, there's no guarantee that all the elements are going to draw crowds.

Secondly, the movies don't necessarily need to "flop"; not all box office successes necessarily translate to theme park success. For example, Titanic was huge, but I'm not aware of anyone building a Titanic ride or park. Aliens and Terminator have both been turned into attractions at one time or another, but not a whole park or land. So, I'd say Cameron has yet to make something that's "Land-worthy".

That's a very good point. Tron isn't something that a lot of fans would connect with, but might make for a very interesting attraction.

I hope now they've bought Lucasfilm, Disney will reassess their priorities and concentrate on a quality Star Wars land. They take so darn long to actually open new areas/rides that I'd rather they concentrate on that rather than avatar.
