Avatar land coming to Animal Kingdom!!

I'm sure most of the same people complaining that the Fantasyland expansion was too girl oriented is complaining about a new expansion that is more oriented towards boys. A follow up move like this was necessary.

I didn't think about the ozone when I watched Avatar. I watched a very entertaining movie with awesome graphics and a pretty interesting "fantasy" theme.

It will fit perfect in Animal Kingdom and Disney will make it appealing, like they do with all their expansions or upgrades.

I never question anything Disney decides to do because they always seem to do it better than any other.

Didn't care much for the movie, though technically well done. I care for this idea even less.

A new country in Epcot would be better.

In any event, we can look forward to trip reports ten years from now that say: "Yeah, the Na'vi guy is still in B mode, strobes going."

A boring movie I couldn't get through even watching at home. Just build Pocahantis land it's the same plot.
We don't go to Animal Kingdom now when we go to the World and we will still have no reason to go.

Awesome! That should be the way it is. Unfortunately it is not. Too many who think that they know better how to run Disney than Disney. Nevermind that they have been doing just fine, well more than fine, for 56 years. :)

Coming soon to a pavilion near you....(hopefully).....Brazil.

I guess this means that I have to stop blindly hating this movie and actually see it now, eh? :)

Not sure what I think. It WILL be cool, because it'll be in a Disney Park and will be done right. If they're already planning two sequels, then it's not a bad time to do it. The Harry Potter franchise is pretty much done (as far as new material goes).

I don't think Avatar ever will gain the cult following that Star Wars and HP have, so that works against them, but we'll see how it works out.

And for those of you who don't like this because it's not "Disney", well, it turns out that it is

;)

Personally, I really liked the movie and its themes, but I don't think that Pandora or the characters are memorable enough to create a land. Avatar got lots of people interested for a few hours, but I don't think it generates enough lasting interest to the point where people are longing to experience the world first hand. It does fit in with Disney's environmental approach, though it'd be naive to say Disney isn't contradictory in its actions and its enviro preaching. Disney does a decent job of promoting environmental issues but it also contributes to them. The two might be compatible or perhaps they will find a middle ground. James Cameron could bring some high tech know how to Disney, so I think even if the story doesn't appeal to you, the attraction(s) will compensate hopefully.

They supported naked Vanessa whatshername and Miley Cyrus' underage soft porn. They are currently showcasing Michael Jackson at Epcot.

We've come a looooong way from Annette and the charm of Disney.

Nail, meet coffin...where's the hammer?

?? The most baffling post I've ever seen on the Dis.

I think its a great idea, especially if they add some late night rides and attractions that tie in well with ecological/living in harmony type themes.

I'm looking forward to it! :thumbsup2

And yes, I did like the movie and couldn't help but make comparisons to ancient Native Americans and some of their cultural practices. So sue me for being a geek. ;)

I think it sounds awesome. I didn't love the movie overall, but I thought it was beautiful. Not just the 3D aspect, but Pandora in general. The idea of visiting another planet, and becoming one of the people is something that really inspires imagination. I think it sounds very Disney.

If it's done well, it will be gorgeous. If not, it will be a tremendous flop. But given James Cameron's attachment to Avatar, and Disney's attention to detail, I think it will be unlikely that it will be that much of a disappointment.

Literally JUST had this conversation with DH and DD15 over the weekend while watching Avatar on HBO for the umpteenth time -

"wonder which theme park is going to build it first?"

SO excited that Disney is moving FORWARD with ideas rather than just repeating the kiddie stuff. This has the potential to be unbelievably beautiful and exciting, with all the incredible creatures!

I don't like this idea for Animal Kingdom at all.
What happened to the mythical creature type land that was originally planned for Animal Kingdom? Dragons and unicorns and other creatures that have already existed in literature and world culture for thousands of years would fit well.
If they wanted rights to a James Cameron movie I'd rather it have been "TITANIC" than "AVATAR".

Speaking of which, can this big budget project maybe free up a bit of cash to fix the Yeti?

I don't know... I still haven't forgiven Disney for the whole Narnia debacle. I wouldn't be surprised if Avatar also ends up being a bunch of props shoved in a room with a half-hearted attempt at a "show". (Unless they've finally taken a clue from Universal, that is.)

Their opportunities to integrate the comics are limited, given the contract with Universal.

I only made it part way through this thread so forgive me if this is covered by someone else, but a cast member told me that Universal only has three years with the Marvel stuff. Disney offered to buy them out up front right away but they refused. He also told me that there are rumors of a "Marvel" land in the future for Disney since they still have so much open land or at least an addition to HS. Now he wasn't a bus driver but I will still wait to see how much of this is true. Has anyone else heard anything similar?

I am actually intrigued by this idea ...

When James Cameron developed Avatar he didn't just create a movie, he created entire worlds and species and languages, etc. and developed cutting edge technology.

IF the plan is for the imagineers to utilize that word and technology to create amazing experiences I am all for this ...

IF the plan is to make a ride that tells the story of the movie and have a bunch of blue Ava-mickey meet and greets, then that will not be cool

so I guess, wait and see for me

Whichever, the movie didn't really keep my interest. I thought it was boring. Then again, outside of Terminator, T2 and the first 2 Alien movies, I think all of Cameron's movies are dull. To each his own, right?

Except that Cameron didn't direct the first Alien movie. Ridley Scott did. ;)
