Avatar coming to Animal Kingdom

WOW. This is so exciting. Imagine with technology now available and the collaboration of Lighstorm and the Disney Imagineers, the things that they could come up with  maybe even a simulator where you get to control the avatar like in the movie !!!! Can't wait.

A film doesn't need "staying power" to still make a good attraction. A good attraction is good regardless and will still be fun long after any movie tie-in is irrelevant. How many people visiting Disney parks today have seen all of the movies most of the rides are based on or would consider them favorites that they watch over and over again? (Example: Carsland - Cars it the worst of the Pixar films - not counting the worse sequel - and yet the appeal of a Carsland is not diminished. Just because the movie was not great doesn't mean the land and rides won't be fun for more than just 5-10 year old boys.)

Avatar the movie was ok, but I was a bit incredulous since the entire plot is nothing but Pocahontas in space. It was visually very pretty, however, and if they can incorporate that visual aspect into the park space and ride(s) (which will be a must) then it could still be a cool place to visit.

I just hope they bulldoze the atrocity that is Dinoland USA in order to make room for it, though they'll probably tear up the Camp Minnie Mickey area instead and kill of FOTLK, which would be a shame, since FOTLK is the best stage show in Disney World.

For me, I could probably get behind it if it were just an attraction, but the fact that it's an entire land is what makes me worry.

Pandora=Effects
Effects=Inside/dark
Inside/dark=air conditioning
AK needs AC
Good

Great for Disney. Snagging "rights" for the highest grossing film of all time!

Unfortunately from a movie standpoint it was complete crap. All it was was special effects. no plot no nothing. IMHO it DOES NOT deserve to be the highest grossing film of all time.

.........Which means based on my last paragraph it is a EXCELLENT thing for Disney BECAUSE it's all sp. Effects.

P.S.

I expect a coaster or Thrill ride or I'll be pretty disappointed.

When I think about the visual beauty of the movie and the various flying scenes in the film, I think there is definitely potential for Disney to try and create an attraction of the "Forbidden Journey" caliber. I hope they shoot high!

I already spend an entire day there -- hopefully this means AK will be open into the evening, even if they have to close the Safari and animal trails.

My only fear is that this place is going to be filled with 3D junk and more screens. I really hope that's not the case, but it's a fear.

On another board, they're saying the budget for this is $400M-$500M... and that sounds like the kind of money/commitment really needed to knock this thing out of the park. Pun intended.

Fair enough.... It's easy to spend a day there if you take your time to enjoy the atmosphere, explore every nature trail, and see all the shows.

But for most people, if there are time constraints, AK is usually the first park to either get nixed from their plans or cut back to a partial day.

Something else i thought about in another thread, I could potentially see something ala World of Color being added into the section. the lights and dancing water could fit unto the "Pandora at Dark" palette, and being a water show would allow Disney to add some much needed/desired evening entertainment at the park while avoiding the Pyrotechnics that are likely to disturb the animals.

Eh...not totally keyed up for this, but I'll take a wait and see stance. I was hoping for Narnia, but to be fair I personally enjoy Narnia more than Pandora. Perhaps I was the only one, though.

Considering Disney gave up the Narnia franchise after Caspian, I'm not surprised they wouldn't do anything more themepark related with it.

IME, I enjoyed Star Tours, even though I didn't see Star Wars until 10 years after my first ride on the attraction. Sure I knew of Star Wars it entered pop culture in the early 80s and was hard to miss. But I went on Star Tours dozens of times before I knew what a big deal it was to blow up the Death Star.

Can't wait to hear more... but considering we're looking a few years ahead, hopefully it will be a generation ahead of "Forbidden Journey."

Would love an experience that turns you into an "Avatar" and sends you out into Pandora -- but hopefully not another 3D simulator ride where you're in a box staring at a screen.

James Cameron is a high-maintenance perfectionist, though, so hopefully he along with the imagineers will come up with something suitably mind-blowing.

That's definitely true -- was just saying that I personally already enjoy the park until closing, which always seems to come too soon. I know many others do not.

Wow nothing fits a theme park bout animals and conservation like Avatar!!

The movie was entirely about conservation.

Holy Blank!

I am cautiously optimistic. An entire Avatar themed land could be spectacular -- and also bring back elements of Beastly Kingdom into the park, although in a way no one could have anticipated.

I'd love to see the concepts for the rides and attractions -- I'm sure everyone here does -- but this has the potential to be something truly exciting, AND help give AK the boost it needs.

And finally... who says you can't keep secrets in the Internet age? Find me one person who leaked this rumor!

Couldn't agree more! I am thrilled for our 4 yo DS. "Avatar" is one of his favorite movies. He is not going to DW this time around, but my parents will be taking him in 6 years - so knowing that this will be there - WOW - he will be so excited. And it's nice for my parents too, since they will get to experience a totally different vacation with their Grandson than this one with me and my daughter. (He's a big Harry Potter fan too - so they will do Universal, and we are not doing it this upcoming trip with DD as she is scared of alot of those rides, attractions etc)

I guess it will be great but it's a little weird? First stop Africa, Asia, and then Pandora?

I must misunderstand Avatar- I haven't seen it but I didn't think it was family/ 4 year old appropriate.

My guess is Disney wanted one attraction and James Cameron's ego couldn't handle not having a land.

Just be weary. If Construction doesn't start until 2013 the is a very high possibility it won't be done in 6 years.

Why not? Beastly Kingdom was in the initial plans. What's more beastly than Pandora?

I'd agree with that -- but to each his own.

Don't get me wrong in excited just letting the shock wear off. While Avatar won't have the lasting power if Potter this us great news!
