Availability of use year when buying direct

While contemplating a direct add on, I remembered the change a while back that allows DVC to change the use year on points they reacquire. Is this good for any resort, even if it's sold out? It sounds like it should make buying the use year I want a whole lot easier, right? Do they have to balance points across the calendar, or is the 'let me check for availability in that use year' a sales tactic?

AFAIK, there is no longer a requirement to balance across the calendar, though DVD will push a certain UY for sales of the new properties throughout the year. There still may be a "let me check availability" because points cannot change across calendar years. Example: if you're looking to purchase a Dec add on today, they will only able to do it if they have 2020 UY points available since we're still in the 2020 Dec UY.

//edit to add: yes, they can change the UY for all resorts, including sold out ones

That's what I thought, thanks.

Yes they can but in order to do it they still have to have a UY that includes points for the same UY needed.

For example, right now, Dec is the only UY left still in its 2020 UY. There is no way to change to it because all other UYs are in their 2021 UY so no 2020 points exist to give to someone.

However, someone wanting a June UY which is in its 2021 UY is something that can be done if they had points from another UY in its 2021. So they could change a Feb to June if need be.

But it also depends on the points wanted and where they are located. You can’t take points assigned to one unit and combine with another unit unless they can rearrange in such a way to balance it out.

So, it’s not as simple as it sounds. But definitely now something they can do if they need or want to and have what is needed to make it work.
