Has anyone ever tried to use a fabric or canvas bag for characters to sign? This will be our DS's 6th trip to WDW and we have always done an autograph book with his pic with the character on the other side. I was really wanting to change things up this year because he really never looks at his books. I have heard of others doing t-shirts, pillow cases and hats but I love the idea of a bag he could use long after he would out grow the shirt or wear out a pillow case or hat. I had thought about getting his name, Mickey ears and/or the year on one side and autographs on the other. It would make a great library book bag.

Anyone with any experience to share???

TIA

We've done the canvas bag twice. My daughter uses one of them now as her dance bag so it gets alot of use/abuse and has held up well. Here are pics of the before of the last one:

We've also done a pillowcase. Here is the after of the pillowcase. It has also held up well even after many may washes. Our daughter sleeps on it every night.

Also -- we filled up both sides of the bag. The Minnie Head is only on one side so I don't think I would put anything larger on the bag unless you aren't planning very many character meets.

I did pillowcases for my kids last year and a bag for myself. I used a canvas bag that I'd gotten at WDW several years before. It turned out so cute! My kids love their pillowcases. I painted their names on them before going in the Disney font. They turned out precious!

We did a canvas bag this trip and it turned out great! My DD is almost 2, so we didn't get many signatures, just her favorites. I did a mickey head on the front and her initial on the back, then some ribbon around the top. I agree with a PP. If you plan on getting a bunch of signatures, I would stick with a small Mickey Head of something to leave you lots of room.

I was looking for an idea for our trip in May ... hadn't even thought about a bag! I am definitely doing this - for myself even if DD wants a book! :hippie:

On our trip last summer, we did drawstring bags I bought on amazon. I had 2 girls with me, so the bags had Tinkerbelle and Ariel on them. They carried them around easily with sharpies and a small piece of cardboard inside (for characters to lean on when writing)

They look great and the girls love them!

I LOVE  the pillowcase idea!!! My kids are 5 and 2 and, while I know they'll want to get autographs, I don't think that they'll be that thrilled with the books.

For those of you who have done them before: did you sew the pillowcase yourself or just embellish it? Did you have the characters sign with fabric markers or just use sharpies? I want to make sure the autographs don't fade over time.

(Did anyone else notice in graceesmom's pillowcase pic it says "Aladdin <3's Princess Jasmine"? Love it!!!)

We used an embellished pillowcase and used fabric markers. On the canvas bag, we used retractable sharpies. On both I sprayed them with 2 coats of scotch guard after we got home. The pillowcase has had several washes and still looks good. The bag hasn't been washed, but does get used quite a bit. It still looks good as well. I've read that sharpies will leave a shadow after washing, but I can't speak from personal experience.

I did recently see in Michael's some new crayola fabric markers that are closer to the size of Sharpies and have more color options. I think we may use those for our upcoming trip. Although retractable Sharpies are so nice b/c I didn't have to worry about keeping up with marker tops.

ETA: We also took a small clipboard and some paper clamps to stretch and hold the pillowcase taught for getting the signatures. I would fold and clip it to an empty area before we got in line so it would be ready when we got to the front of the line.

Thanks everyone!! I thought it was a great idea and just knew someone here would have thought of it before me and would have some tips!! I am excited to try this out this summer!! :woohoo:
