We are taking the Auto train this summer. We are trying to decide if we want to reserve 2 Superliner Roomettes. How big are these beds. My husband is 6'5". Will he fit? My 7 year old will not sleep in the top bunk and I'm not sure if I am comfortable with him on the bottom bunk with me up top. I'm afraid he might get up and wonder off. Can you lock these rooms? Can I share the bottom bed with him so I know when he stirs around?

Your DH will fit better in the bed than he will in a coach seat. Probably will have to bend his knees a little.

There is a door that closes. Your son would have to open the door to 'escape", I'd imagine you would hear if that happens. As for both of you sleeping in the bottom bunk, that is also an option. You would have to cuddle, but it's do-able.:thumbsup2

If you google the Amtrak Autotrain website, they gave the specific measurements of the bed and rooms on the site.
We measured out the area of the roomette and beds and mapped them out on our living room floor with strings.
The area seemed very small to me for a closed in area (I'm pretty claustrophobic) so we decided to go with the coach seats because the area is open.

Might be a little tight for your husband. They are not as claustrophobic as the measurements might make them appear, since you're not confined to them there is a large window on the outside of the train and the wall to the hallway is glass, with a drape that you can close if you want privacy. It's not like you're in a closed in closet.

If you decide to go this route don't make your reservations online phone them, that way you can request two rooms across the hall from each other. The rooms are assigned when you make your reservations.

We enjoy the autotrain and will be using it again on our next trip.

Instead of two roomettes check out a family bedroom. You all will be in the same room, and your son will have his own bottom bunk. And I think the bottom adult-sized bed is a bit bigger than in the roomette.

Plus you are all in the same room.

For our upcoming mid May AutoTrain trip, AMTRAK would NOT allow me, DH and our grandson - 2yr 10 months to share one roomette. We had to book 2 roomettes. 2 roomettes was actually a few dollars cheaper than a family room.

As for size of the bed in the roomettes, I believe the bottom bunk is supposed to be 6'5" long. He may be slightly crunched, but he should fit OK.
