Aussie Disneyland Planners come on in and lets plan together :)

regarding the ESTA etc, I can only tell you what is on the Air New Zealand website as we are travelling with them.
Referring to ESTA it says:
"........This online form may eventually replace the green visa waiver form (I-94W) which is currently completed whilst inflight to the US.
.........Until the US authorities withdraw the I-94W it will remain a requirement to complete this form on board the aircraft."

The dollar is always in my thoughts...always...

As for Travellers Cheques...Disney take these no worries (in my experience) and if you are low on cash it is a great way of getting change. (eg...you have a $50 TC and buy something for $15...you get $35 change.)

The main advantage of carrying extra "cash" (beyond what you think you will use) as Travellers Cheques is that you can always cash them in after the trip without losing so much with commissions and a the worse exchange rate they use for cash. The banks we are with offer commission free purchasing of TCs. We much prefer using CCs for the points but TCs are an insurance against a drop in the dollar.

It's always a gamble of course but we're happy to hold out and pay for our accommodation etc using our credit card - we like the Frequent Flyer points! Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose - last year we did badly, hit the USA the day that the dollar really started to dive
We had the same thing :( We entered the US with it at 0.65 ......

For those that are going to the ToT party, who is dressing up?

We have just decided on our costumes. We are going as Coraline - all of us. So there will be a small, a medium and a large Coraline. Costume is easy but fun and I think we will probably look somewhat amusing :rotfl:

xxx

We are doing something simple - 70's for us adults so we will just wear boho dresses, tiedyed tops, flares (which I'll sew up from some old jeans) and mini's with a combination of afro's and long waist length wigs :hippie:

My girls will be going in a piratey costume if I ever get it sewn.

yeah, Fry was in UTAH monument valley and an indian took him to the bridge, it's the largest natural bridge in the world. looked amazing.

think I have everything in order. Boy there are so many damn cables and charges to take it is ridiculous.

That's one advantage of having a son that works for a bank - commission free foreign currency :yay: Now, if only he could get us a better interest rate!

I asked DS ( senior) to pick up some US$ for me today - he said they've been going like hotcakes in the last few days. It's just an average suburban branch and they've sold over $40,000 in a couple of days! They get a lot of people just buying cash as an investment, not just travelers, so it looks like there's a lot of people expecting the rate to improve. I sure hope so :)

Queenie, you must have been there the same time as us last year. While we were there we decided to try to ignore the exchange rate altogether - didn't want to let it spoil our trip. :)

Yes that's all you have to do ahead of time, you'll just have to fill in the immigration card on the plane as well ( OR - have they done away with that since the ESTA stuff came in? Anyone know ? We traveled last year on the old system)

Qantas has just called me to do our pre flight check in, as we fly out tomorrow morning. The imigration cards are definately still required.

1 more sleep :cool1:

Oh I know that nervous tummy feeling....last trip I spent the week before thinking....do I really want to go...do I really really want to go...
There is no logic behind it...but I get it each time.

As for Tickets...I think we were the last people in Australia to have PHYSICAL tickets on our last trip...:lmao::lmao: The Qantas guy did a double take!

I hope the weather is good for all you guys and not too hot! I haven't looked at Anaheim recently but I know when Hamish and Andy arrived in Vegas it was 37degrees

To everyone who is leaving in the next few days - have lots of fun! We can't wait to hear all the details when you return.

Yay, have fun G. Can't wait to hear all about it when you get back.

Thanks to all, I will fill you in when we get back. My brain feels like it has gone blank and all I have learnt about Disneyland has disappeared. I remember this happened last time and I started by wandering aimlessly until I managed to grab a map and work out where everything was.

Ms Shuttergirl I will send the kids a postcard as soon as I get there, then fingers crossed that you will get it before you go :thumbsup2

The house has been cleaned :laundy:, food in the fridge for house sitter popcorn::, bags nearly all packed - Oh my it's really going to happen tomorrow. I keep screaming, I'm going to Disneyland, my staff think I've lost it, oh well.

I am scared I will feel the same way, blank blank blank.

Thanks for the postcards in advance, you are a doll.

Have the most amazing time.

I thought I would post a copy of this old entry I made that included photography tips since many of us are about to jet off. Have a last read through before you go and shoot shoot shoot...

PHOTOGRAPHY

Okay everyone, I'm not sure but I think I am the only photographer in our little group so I thought it was time to talk photography whilst at Disneyland.

I am a firm believer that photos are one of the most important elements of a great holiday, in the sense that, once it's over, all you have are your memories and your photos (and the thousands of dollars of souveneirs :lmao:). Your memory will eventually fade but the photos won't and it's the photos that will reactivate your memory in the long run.

So I guess I just wanted to remind you all of a few key things to getting great images whilst at Disneyland (keep in mind I haven't been there yet, :rotfl2:)

1. Make sure to fill the frame when you are taking photos of people. If the focus is on say a character and your little ones, shoot with the camera veritcal rather than horizontal to make sure to get as much of them in as possible. Keep their heads in the top third of the frame. Many times I have seen people's images where they put the heads in the centre of the shot, having a ton of sky or useless stuff above and miss out of tons of detail down the bottom.

2. Horizontal images are great for fitting in lots of detail, like the castle, etc. but vertical works best for people (unless shooting a large group) because you often don't need all of that space at the sides of the image.

3. Remember, often the sweetest things are the little details. Try to capture small details in your images that will bring those memories flooding back. It seems to me that Disneyland is a place filled with colours and textures and amazing details and it would be wonderful to capture that also.

4. Try to be a little creative with your images. It doesn't take any extra time to shoot something from a different angle or place. This is especially great if you have been to Disneyland a few times, why keep taking the same photos, try for something different. Get down low and shoot upwards, get up high and shoot down, angles are great too. Again, fill the frame with what you are shooting, don't have lots of blank sky, etc.

5. If like me you are always the designated photographer, consider using Photopass. I plan to work the Photopass thing until the photographers can't stand me anymore. I am tired of going on holiday and not having one image of me in it. I definitely think Photopass is worth the money to capture your whole family in some great locations.

6. If you have a small camera, make sure to hold it out in front of you and take some photos of yourself and whoever you are riding with, mid ride. Imagine how cool a self portrait of you on dumbo at night would look, etc. Often those in motion blurry less than perfect images are real faves in the end.

7. If you are going to take a photo of one of the most popular things at DL, like the castle, always plop one of your family members into the image. It gives it more relevance than just another shot of the castle. Let's face it, you could've just bought a postcard of the image done with a better photographer than yourself if you aren't going to have family in the shot.

8. If you are like me and love love love food and can't wait to go on an eating odyssey, make sure to take photos of your food before digging in, you'll get a real kick out of looking back on those.

9. Take a photo of each sign of your favourite rides or locations. When looking through the photos, you want your images to tell the story, even if you aren't there to explain what was happening. Taking images of Ride signs, outside of shows and restaurants and storefronts really helps set the mood for people who may enjoy looking at your trip photos with you.

10. Spend some time in the photography section of the DIS boards. We spend so much time researching the best prices, what to take, what to see, etc., why not spend some time thinking about how we want to capture the memories while we are there which brings me back to my original comment about the photos being one of the only things you are truly left with in the end.

11. Most of all, capture your children's faces, zoom in, don't be afraid to fill the frame with their sweet smiles. Because frankly, that's what it is all about. IT'S ALL ABOUT SMILES ON FACES!

12. It's great to take a moment to compose a shot that will be treasured, but it's also okay to capture a blurry child in motion having fun. Not everything has to be technically perfect, but if the time allows, stop, brace your elbows to your sides to prevent camera shake, take a breath, press the shutter, then breath out.

I hope some of those tips can help you on your trips. I can't wait to see everyone's images. Looking at other's holiday photos makes me happy and tides me over until I finally get there (fingers crossed Dec 2010).

For myself, I have tossed up whether to lug my heavy expensive camera and lenses around with me. Part of me would love to just take a tiny point and shoot for convenience. But in my heart, I know I would be disappointed when I got home. I know I want to be able to take a photographic journey as well as a fun one, so I will just suck it up, lug the stuff and in the end I know I will be happier. And I will chant to myself "it is okay for a photographer to take crappy blurry snaps when she is having fun with her kids and it doesn't matter" over and over :rotfl2:

OMGoodness, I just read through everything I wrote and noticed that down the bottom I wrote that I hoped to get to DL in Dec 2010. How much has changed since then. Only 20 sleeps until we leave for our trip to the US. Who knew I would get to go this year. What a wonderful reminder that I am a very lucky girl.

Thanks so much for reposting that :goodvibes I didn't see it the first time. I was also debating whether to take my big camera, but would probably kick myself if I don't. On the other hand, the kids have crummy digital cameras which take movies - perfect for parades!

Thanks for the photography tips. I am new to the photography world, so they will definitely come in handy.

Have fun peeps that are leaving shortly :goodvibes - hopefully it wont get too quiet in here over the next couple of weeks ! :thumbsup2

Ms Shuttergirl - how awesome you have gotten your dream a year earlier!!!!!!!
As for the repost thanks so much for all of that. I'm in a career that should have made me want a big camera with lenses but I just love my good quality point and shoot olympus 1060 (10 megapixels, 7 x zoom). It really does a great job and has a pretty decent wider angle than any of the others I have had.
I spend parades filming anyway and the great part of this is you can do screen capture of magic moments. (I love this...the guy freaked me out...)
