We are going to Aulani in June and my son will be 4y 9m. He wants to try out surfing. I saw that HNL offers it that young, but does anyone have experience with young kids surfing? Can they do it (with the instructor of course, I know he would need a private lesson). He is a proficient swimmer and can swim the length of the pool (25 yards). He is starting lessons again this week, so imagine by June he will have a somewhat proficient little freestyle. Any thoughts?

Swimming in a pool is not the same as swimming in the ocean. I would try snorkeling first or let him try just swimming in the lagoon at Aulani before advancing to surfing. He can get a free boogie board to swim with the surf at Aulani. Or if he gets really good there are paddle boards arei available for rent at Aulani.

We used HNL for surf lessons last February when my youngest was 6. I was nervous at first but the beach area they use is pretty low key and Molly's instructor Brian, was awesome. He was so good with her, they road tandem the entire time and to see her stand up on that board was pretty awesome as she is a pretty timid kid generally. I was more worried about my own safety out there as I most definitely was not a natural out there lol.
