August????

Okay am i 100000% crazy for booking a trip the 25th-30of August? We are from Michigan and not really a fan of the heat, but our oldest is starting High School and We cant take her our of school and I work for a airline so I cant take time off around the holidays. Are we total nuts and are we going to hate this trip? We norm go in the fall but went once in September and it was HOT. Please tell me we can do this with breaks and lots and lots of water???
from someone that lives in FL here is what I would do

fans with misters
cooling cloths I like omni freez (0)
hat or use a small umbrella to keep the sun off you
sun screen
cooling cloths (I use O2cool)

I would hit any fully out door rides first thing in the morning or at lest an hour after the sun goes down.

What gap2368 said! Lots of good advice in this thread. You know it is going to be miserable hot and you have accepted it. I think that is more than half the battle. I would rope drop in the mornings, take a midday break at pools, waterpark, sit down restaurant or a quick and cool nap in your room. maybe from 1:00-4:00 or 5 and then close the parks down.

We went for the first time at the end of August 2 years ago. We usually go Oct/Nov/Jan/Feb... so I was worried. BEST TRIP I HAVE HAD! Several reasons

1) You have to slow down because it's just too hot to rush everywhere - do exactly what everyone else has said... rope drop at park of choice, leave by 1pm, go to water park or pool, back in the evening for dinner/fireworks
2) Crowds were much better than I expected
3) I think a longer trip is key - we were there 9 days, but I loved that since the kids weren't missing school, I was less stressed (I have taken them out of school for every other trip, and I always feel guilty).
4) When you are too hot - call it quits and go swimming. We spent more time at the pools/waterparks than we ever had before, and it made us all happy.
5) Love the umbrella tip - it makes great shade if you have to be outside waiting for something (like a parade at 3pm that my 5-year-old INSISTED was necessary to see in 90+ degree direct sun)
6) Water, water, water - drink it, spray it, does a remarkable job of keeping you sane.
7) Shops/inside shows/AC spaces for 11am or later. We would do one outside ride, and then do something inside (even if we had done it before!) in MK, Small World (even if it's not your favorite, the AC is worth is), Pirates, Philharmagic, etc...

I really want to go again during the summer, and tried to plan a trip for the end of August this year, but we just can't swing it since we are going in April and November as well. I'm hoping for next summer!

Take it easy, prepare for the heat, know your limits and listen to yourself and your kids and you will have fun.

also most lines are in doors or in side

space mountain is always cool and the line is all inside
7DMT is some in side and the part that is out side has big fans I should say I have never done the main line but only FP for this ride but the indoor part of the ride is very cool
see a show every now and then cool indoor MK has a few

most lines at EPCOT is indoor in the AC
same with HS
I do not spend that much time at AK but for me this park is the hottest of them all so go early and then get out

That's about when we're going, I'm hoping we'll survive!

No turning back now, I got five tickets from Detroit to Orlando with bag fees both ways for 700 bucks.

Mind telling me which airline you're flying? I've had no luck finding anything reasonable out of DTW so far, hoping that prices go down when Southwest releases their schedules.

You are NOT crazy. You should find that week, crowds are more than manageable, bordering on light. Park hours are still pretty long, though not quite like the summer peak. It will be hotter than hell, humid like you've never seen, and probably will rain every afternoon for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Drink plenty of water, rest when necessary, and you will handle the weather a LOT better than you expect!

Michigan,
My family loves going in August and we've been a number of times over the years.

1) my kids are fishes, they love pool time. Every time we've gone in November, December, April Orlando seems to be having an "unusual" cold snap. One year during Jersey week it was so cold we had to run to walmart and get jackets. I don't like wearing coats on rides.

2) longer days. We have hoppers and the long summer days gives us plenty of time to go to one park, chill out during heat of hte day and still have a bunch of time to check out park 2.

3) enjoy the resorts. since the midday is hot and we go back to the resort we find we slow down and enjoy the resorts.

I'll just echo everyone else. we get water bottles, freeze them and always have cold water. dress lightly and have material that can breathe and wicks moisture away.

We have been to Disney in July for ten days each of the last two years and we found it is much easier to deal with the heat by staying at Deluxe resorts. I know that sounds strange but hear me out, lol.

We stayed at Port Orleans two years ago and we love the resort but we have found that we need to take breaks every afternoon with our three year old and the bus ride back and forth to Port Orleans made that very difficult. We rented points this past year and again this coming August. It wasn't much more expensive than Port Orleans and we stay at Boardwalk for six days and then the Contemporary for three. We go to Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom while we are at Boardwalk and then Magic Kingdom while we stay at Contemporary. This allows us to walk to all of the parks except AK instead of waiting for Disney transportation. The other thing we love about Deluxe resorts is that the refrigerators have freezers and moderate resorts do not. We would each take a frozen bottle of water with us each morning and afternoon after our break and just let it melt into cold water all day.

I don't want to sway you away from Port Orleans because it is our favorite moderate but it is just so much easier to take afternoon breaks when you take a ten minute walk to and from your resort instead of wasting 45-60 minutes each way waiting for buses.

We usually tour from rope drop to 12 or so and then go back to the resort to rest and swim and go back to the park from 4 or 5 until close.

Hi guys,
Fellow Michigander here. We have been the last two weeks in August a few times -- Is it awful? Can be. Are there daily thunderstorms? Probably. Will you make it? Definitely. We actually try to find the humor in it -- aka my dad's "insta-sweat" from the humidity. Take breaks if you can in the afternoons (during the hottest time of the day or when it ends up raining). You'll have a great time!

Anyway, back to flights. Have you guys thought about flying out of Flint with Southwest? Flint is actually closer to us by 15-20min (maybe more considering the 275/96 AM traffic). Just something to look into. We got round trip flights for $250 round trip. Plus the parking is only $7 a day. Might be worth looking into!

August in FL isn't too bad but then we're more used to it. I think it'll be tiring but ok

We went for a weekend in August years ago, but are planning our first long trip in August for this year. That said, we had a two-week trip once in May where the temps hit over 100 degrees almost every day! To add to the fun, I was 5 months pregnant. :) It actually wasn't as bad as I would have thought. We were there for RD every day, midday breaks at the hotel, and often a quick shower and change of clothes then. Then back out for the evenings and late nights. DH and I will be ok, but crossing my fingers that the kids (11 and 9) won't be crankier in the heat...!

You're not crazy!!! We can only go in August- we have gone the last five years in Aug and love it!! We are even taking our honeymoon this Aug!!
We survived every Aug and last year was a crazy heat wave, felt like 105 everyday. With plenty of breaks, snacks, water, hats and sunscreen you can definitely do it. I love Aug, the crowds are very manageable. Have a magical trip!!!

I've done August once. Probably never again. It would take free dining, and free tickets to make me do it again (lol.) Even then I'd probably only visit the theme parks in the early AM!

We went end of August one year. As Canadians we nearly MELTED. It was awful heat. Luckily the crowds were low and most of the Queues were shaded. We only did mornings and evenings in the parks. We spent a lot of time at our resort pool and at the water parks (which were more crowded than the parks).

We drink a lot of ice water (request it free at counter services), it is much better then drinking luke warm water from a bottle you brought in the am. Cooling towels are also great. We love going then but the heat is impressive. We spend a lot of time at the resort pool during the day.

Won't say you're crazy, but am saying 'I' would be if I were doing it!
We are here now and it is sooo pleasant - upper 70's to 80 the last few days, light showers now and cooling to high in 60's. No way would we go again in summer, not to mention the difference in crowds.

Drinking lots of water, taking breaks - 'none' of that made any difference to how terrible the heat was to us. I'm from south LA and still no way to adjust to being out in the heat most of the day.

So we do have hope??? Thats good to know. I was kind of wondering if we could resort hope and maybe take a break at a closer hotel. We are only going for six days and we really want to do as much as we can in the parks. I know the plan is to do some of the rides in the AM and then shows and water stuff in the afternoon. Scares me to death going in the Heat but we either went in the heat of not at all. Jun we have WAY to much stuff going on, July I am ging to Europe for two weeks (going to hit up Hong Kong Disney while I am over in Aisa) and Septembr my oldest starts High School so August is the only time we can go. We will make this work.

We live two miles from Metro Airport. We were able to get 5 tickets and all our bag fees for 720 but you got a really good deal.

I have tried to avoid the August heat in Disney world because I don't like heat at all. So instead we go end of April/ beginning of May.
.. well let me tell you, a few years ago when we went the entire week was record high of 96 to 97 degrees which is similar to August temps with lower humidity. So this year we are going in August for lower crowds. I've discovered try as you may, you can't always avoid Florida heat! Might as well enjoy low crowds in August :)
