We've been going in Sept and are used to paying around 200 RT from JFK (NY) to Orlando. This year was higher at about 250 (after credits through Jetblue). How does late August compare? We will probably fly out on a Fri morning, and back on a Mon evening. Is it bad to fly back on Labor Day? Are rental car prices about the same? Hurricane activity about the same in late Aug as mid Sept?

I haven't been able to get a fare from Boston or Providence, to MCO, for under $250 for quite awhile now. The airlines know when the popular times for travel are going to be and they adjust their fares accordingly. Same with rental cars.
I would book airfare as soon as it is a fare you are comfortable with. You can book a rental car but keep looking. I booked a rental for my San Diego trip about 3 months in advance. Since that time, I've changed it three times....saved myself about $100 for the five day stay...started at over $200 and now its about $120.
As for weather??? We ran into Hurricane Charley in mid-August. Others have had hurricane-ish weather in late August and early Sept..it's peak storm time.
