We will be new DVC members as of March and are planning a couple trips for the upcoming year. We are looking at August for one trip but we are wondering if the heat and crowds are unbearable? Would this be a good trip to do the water parks? Thanks Disers.

We have been to WDW the last 2 years in August with my mother in law who wanted to go in August. Go figure.
It is definitley Hot and Crowded in August. We went just after mid month both times and it helped some with the crowds because Florida schools were back in session but you had to get there ealry to get on rides and plan on waiting for a while from noon on. We have never been to the water parks, but I imagine that it woudl be a good time to go at least for the heat issue.

Our plan was always to get to the parks early and head back to the resorts after lunch to swim and miss the hottest part of the day. Then we headed back in the evenings. If this is the only time your schedule allows you to go then you can have a good time. I just don't think we will be going back during this time because it was really hot.

We went this past August. It was hot, and there were hard rain showers, but the crowds weren't bad at all. From the boards, we found that another Diser would be at BWV the same time as we, and we made plans to meet at Typhoon Lagoon. It was a great match-up, and the 10 year old girls in each party had good times together. In the evening of our TL day, we met at MGM for the Extra Hour night, there was a second showing of Fantasmic, but the lines for ToT and R&R were bad, but they managed to do both,

On our Epcot mornings, we were able to get FP for Soarin for an hour or two out and just get in the standby line for a quick wait at the time we got there. We did that 2 mornings. Either people didn't know about Soarin or that's an indication of lighter crowds than we had this past weekend, MLKjr weekend, we didn't make it on Soarin at all.

We're going the same time of the year again, this time with other family members.

We have gone twice at the end of August. Both times the heat was oppressive, and it was very wet. I didn't think the crowds were as bad as I was anticipating, even when we were there on Labor Day. Just remember it will be the hieght of hurricane season, and the past two years have not been kind to Florida in that department.

We were there in Aug 04 and yep, it was hot and wet. It rained practically every afternoon. We were there in the middle of the month and I thought it was very crowded. If I were to go in Aug again, I'd shoot for the last week and then into September. I'm assuming you're working around a school schedule.

It is very hot and you will more than likely get your daily rain shower. If you stay at a DVC resort, the BCV might be a big hit because of the pool( Stormalong Bay). That's what we did in the summer and the kids loved the mid afternoon swim everyday and going back to the parks later after dinner time when it cooled a bit.

We have gone in aug several times and love it. We are from Jersey and it is not that much more unbearable weatherwise than home. The later in Aug you go, the less crowds you will hit. If you plan well, it is great time to go(I'd rather be in 100 degrees over anything under 50, so the heat is not really a factor for my family). Remember, WDW will always be better than home.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will forward this info along to my husband. It sounds a little like Dec. except with warmer weather!
I guess WDW will always be somewhat crowded unless you can go during the school year.
Thanks

It's summer-where isn't it hot?!
That said, you will get your share of rain-it's Florida.
we did alot of pool and or waterparks. Theme parks-early morning and at night. It is very dodable. You do have to plan for the down time of pools and relaxing in the shade.

I have been to Williamsburg in the summer-I don't think I could do that again. The thing that got me was going in and out of AC. I am better just being the heat than in and out of air conditioning.

Not really. The crowds will be heavier in August than early December and lighter than late December.

I went in late August 2005 and although it was very hot, it wasn't crowded at all. I loved it because, since it was so hot, I didn't spend much time in the parks "comando touring", but I found I spent more time at the resort and by the pool. So it was a great time for a vacation. Just be careful-you could get a hurricane! In 2005, we got some rain from Katrina, before it went and did all that damage in New Orleans.

We go at the end of August almost every year, and I love it at that time. We went Christmas week this year & THAT is what I call crowded. I can't believe we had to wait in line for El Rio Del Tiempo, we actually had to get fast passes for Maelstrom & when we went to MK, we waited till much later in the evening to go on POTC, because the line went half way through Adventure Land. Go in August & you can walk on all those rides. Of course you will need to get fast passes for the thrill rides, but at Christmas time, you were lucky to get a fast pass at all. I also like the fact that you can pack shorts, tank tops & bathings suits & you're all set for the week. In December you have to pack a little of everything, because the weather goes from 70's during the day to 40's at night. Yes in August you get a quick thunderstorm in the afternoon, but it cools everything off a bit. Otherwise, it's beautiful & sunny & when you get back from the parks it's still warm enough to enjoy the pool for a while.

we went 2nd to last week in aug last yr for the free dining. we rode buzz lightyear about 75 times, most rides had at most 15 min wait, near end of day things got really busy, but crowds were manageable. we would go till about 11-12 noon, leave as people were starting to come, go back to pool, swin, take naps, then head back out about 4pm for dinner and more parks. it always rained everyday during naptime, so that worked out great for us!

As you can see below we are going to try August this time. I have been in February-1, May - 3 times & October-1 and I was also there Spring Break when I was in High School. We have friends that have gone in August and they loved it. I am looking forward to it as I hope it won't be as busy as most schools are back in session, the last 2 seasons have been very unstable with weather that I hope that will also keep the crowds down. Then we come home to get ready for school. I think October was unbearable due to the crowds. Mother's day weekend is a no no due to crowds and we have tried that twice. When we got married we went the end of May, beginning of June and didn't think it was that bad. I don't care as I look forward to the hotel, pool and away from home for awhile. Any where is better than home for a vacation.

Going the first week of August this year again (BCV)-its great. :cool1:

1) Wear some kind of swim short (leave your underwear at home-"commando" started from this). :smooth:

2) Wear sandals (leave your socks at home).

3) Get wet at all opportunities. :boat:

4) Drink a lot of water. :drinking:

5) Remember last winter (like today). :cold:

Due to school schedules, the summer is the only time we can go.

(We went once during Easter break - absorb the whole atomsphere -this is fine with us - but don't expect to go on many rides unless you want to wait for hours) - and once we went early November which absolutely perfect).

We normally go during the month of August (we prefer middle of the month on when schedule allows us). Since owning DVC, no more commando mode. Take early afternoon breaks, back at resort and spend some time at the pool, lunch, shower, relax, etc. before heading back out early in the eve. Bring ponchos. We ususally do both water parks also.

Once you know what to expect you can prepare for it. Good luck.

Last Aug DS & I were in WDW 8/13-27. This Aug we'll returning 8/12-8/26

We have gone at the end of August 2 years in a row and love it! However, the tropical heat can be intense for some. We are in the snow belt and do not mind that after months of cold. In August we are in the pools at least 3-4 times/day and the water parks have been great to cool off. Disney also has quite a few AC attractions indoors so that can help too.

Thanks everyone! It is official we are going July 23 thru Aug. 4th. I am looking forward to not having to pack winter coats like we do in Dec. I really am excited to try the waterparks too. 1st week BCV; 2nd week OKW

We went the last week of Aug(leading up to Labor Day) 2005.
It was hot, though I never felt too hot except while we were sitting at the Lights Motors Action show, it rained, but the crowds were fantasticly low!
Probably on par with early Feb(not Presidents week), but not quite as quiet as early September.

I asked a CM if it's always like this and she said oh yes, it's one of the best kept secrets around!

It was awesome!
