August Do's and Don'ts

I never wear hats, but one trip with a burned part in the middle of my hairline on top of my head changed my tune on that :earsgirl:

3. We picked up a couple of the Kool Tie's at REI as well. Kids have a swim meet in Aug. that is usually long and HOT. I'm going to bring them along and see how they work before trekking them down to Florida. I have high hopes so my fingers are crossed. Here's a link to the Kool Ties: http://www.rei.com/product/691097

We bought these for our trip last year and loved them!! They stay cool a really long time, and there's just something about having something cool on your neck - it's great! When they start to feel a little warm, just twist them around - the outside part will still be cool.

Stagger your inside and outside shows/rides

Yes, and when you are really weary from the heat, do a longer inside show, like Hall of Presidents or American Adventure. I think Universe of Energy is the longest attraction, so it's a nice, long spell of a/c.

Do not hesitate to stop inside somewhere to cool off or get a drink if you are starting to feel weary.

And walk through the shops whenever you can. Along Main Street in MK and most of the Studios shops are connected, so you can get where you are going (or a little closer, anyway) while inside.

Don't try to "go commando" on your trip.

I totally thought you meant the other kind of commando. ;)

When you go to the rest room take a towel and wet it, Wipe your neck. It cools you down.

Another good tip - and when you can, rub an ice cube along your wrists and neck. This can really help you manage your body temperature. (A lot of people like those cooling neck wraps but to me they feel strange.)

Thinking about the cooling neck wraps. Found them at Amazon for a good price but will check Walmart first. I'm wearing a hat for the first time because I got skin cancer on the top of my head a year and a half ago. Never even had a burn there but still got cancer.

It's been hotter than heck here with 107 heat index. I worked outside all weekend in full sun to earn some extra Mickey money. It was good preparation for a trip to WDW in late summer.

Loose, light weight cotton in light colors works well. Tennis shoes works well for me. Hat/ball cap made me cooler. Drink lots of water till you're visiting the bathroom regularly.

anyway to avoid that w/o the hat? LOL I always get that burnt line on the top of my head, it never hurts or burns, but I am afraid in Aug Florida sun it will.

What SPF do you all use while there? I never wear sunblock and right now I have a really nice tan from the nice weather we've been getting here in NJ, I have been running at the beach everyday and then laying out for an hour. I want to still get tan while there, but I don't want to get red and by unhappy and uncomfy for my vacation.

Ok this next tip is to my fellow Chesty dissers :) I think many of you will agree that it can get quite hot and sweaty under the "Girls" well this is what I do....(don't ask me how I figured this out cus I really don't remember LOL) Take nursing pads and cut them in half. Place on pad between each "Girl" and your torso. The pad will absorb the sweat making it much more pleasant in there LOL. Change them out as needed :) Again I have no idea what made me think of this but I had a big box of the pads left over so for some reason one day I tried it :)

( Oh my goodness I have never told that to anyone before!!! :rotfl: I am blushing now HAHA  )
Great idea!! I always have to bring extra bras for August trips because they get soaked with sweat everyday. Sorry guys, if that's TMI.:scared1:

I always use the sunblock SPRAY and spray my part and my kids' parts on their hair. As far as hats, we go with the Nike Dry hats that runners use. They can dry fast like the shirts mentioned earlier.
Great tips everyone - keep them coming!!!
My one tip for today is to get a dry bag for your camera bag to absorb all the humidity. Every morning that we went out for EMH, it was so humid that my camera steamed up every morning from coming out of AC in the hotel room. Missed good shots of the rope drop performances b/c of it. The dry bags are sold at camera stores. If not, as soon as you leave your hotel, open that camera bag so it can get "used" to the heat by the time you get to the park.

Most of us here are already aware of this, but it's worth it to mention that Sun & alcohol do not mix. Those margarita stands all around EPCOT, while their icy concoctions are tempting in the heat of the day, will cause you more pain than they'll provide pleasure. Wait until dusk and treat yourself then :thumbsup2

Will do!!

We've had three August trips with no issues. Do take the pool breaks in the afternoons. We always get to the parks for early magic hours and sometimes leave right after lunch for a swim break. Then back for a dinner reservation and the parks again.
Ponchos just incase you have a long rain. Two years ago we went in July and one day it rained all day long. We ended up buying umbrellas it was that bad....the roof of the Contemporary leaked on our table at Chef Mickey's that night.

My family and I tend to be late-starters also. We'll have breakfast, hit the pools, etc. in the morning and then head over to the parks later in the afternoon.
