Brag Warning!

Stop reading if you don't want to hear me brag about Jared! :teeth:

Jared's baseball team had their Tournament of Champions game last night. They won their division up north here, so they went in to play a team from Phoenix. They lost, 7-2....but.....we were down 5-0 with bases loaded and Jared came to bat, 4th inning. It was just in the last few months that Jared would even swing at the ball since breaking his nose (and having surgery) twice playing ball.
So....he gets up to bat, and ....with a full count....swings....hits.....the ball flies out and hits the center field fence post. One more milimeter and it would have been a home run! As it was, two runs scored on his RBI, their only runs of the night!!!
He became an instant star. To say we were all proud would be an understatement!:cool1:

Congratulations Jared!!! :cheer2:

Stacey, a mini trip report sounds good to me!

Anyone know if you have to be staying on property or be booked on a package to book the Fantasmic Dessert party or the wine and cheese Elec. Light Parade? I'm thinking of doing one of these and I really don't know much about them. I have friends that did the wine and cheese and really liked it but they were staying on property.

I haven't seen the Light Parade this summer, but I've never seen it so crowded that you couldn't get a good spot to watch shortly before the parade began, unlike the Disneyland parades. And from everything I've been reading on miceage.com and jimhillmedia.com, DCA attendance remains significantly below projections. Fantasmic, on the other hand, is always crowded and difficult to get a good viewing spot without staking out your turf a couple of hours early.

Hey Barb - I had not even heard of the wine/cheese deal so I looked it up and found this:

http://www.mouseplanet.com/more/mm020711.htm

The review of the wine/cheese seating for the parade doesn't look very favorable, imo. Did you get the Disney Visa special when booking your trip? It includes 1 preferred seating at any DLR parade.

All of these restaurants sound so good at DL!! :lovestruc
I promised my DH not to schedule things at DL too, I guess this trip
will be more to scope it out since it is so short. Then we can plan to go back and do more another time...

Cathy

Aha - I see how that works. Of course, we tend to check out the restaurants and make plans to go back again another time to try the dishes we didn't get to the first time around.....;)

Okay, guys and gals...the Q & A lines are open!

Or, should I do a mini-trip report and go from there?

Stacey - welcome back! I vote for the mini-trip report too! I would love to hear about your visit - that'll probably generate some questions. One question right off the bat, how different are your navigators from the ones posted at Tagrel?

Thanks for the info Carl. I had forgotten my friends did both preferred seatings last year and my one friend really liked the wine/cheese seating event and suggested we do that. I'm actually thinking of booking the Fantasmic dessert package since we haven't seen Fantasmic at either park.....gasp! In fact 2 years ago we saw the ELP at D'land Paris twice and then later that year we saw it at DCA.

Eve, we booked our hotel thru our timeshare so no Disney Visa perks for us. But by us booking the way we did we have more money to spend on fun

Stacey, trip report....trip report. They spark many more questions than we could think of on our own. Besides, you like to write and talk anyways :chat: :teeth: :love2: :hyper2:

Eve, I don't know about the Navs posted at Tagrel. I don't know what Tagrel is? Is that a code? If it is, you'll have to pardon my ignorance. I've been having major brain malfunction since getting home.

I'll start the report tomorrow.

I pulled a muscle in my back today. I couldn't get to sleep, so I decided to come write until my painkiller kicks in.

DAY ONE
We flew out of Phoenix on Mesa Airline, operated by America West. A little small plane...the kind with only two seats on each side. Glad it was only an hour flight.
We arrived at Long Beach Airport (boy, is it small!) at about 11:20 or so. Our private Super Shuttle van was waiting for us, just across the walkway.
We loaded up and started what I had been led to understand was only a 10 minute drive. More like 30-40.
The port area is very industrial. Lots of huge tankers and ships loaded with goods. As we started across the bridge to where the Magic was docked, I was the first to see her stacks, as I was seated in the center of the seat. I managed to get a couple of pics out the van window.
We pulled up right in front of the terminal. A rather industrial looking building, but they did have an inflated Nemo and Sorceror Mickey out front, and the DCL and Disney's 50th flags.
A porter came up right away and took our tagged bags. Before we could enter the building, we had to show our documents. Not picture ID, just the docs. And they hardly looked at them.
Once inside, there was a lady at a booth instructing us to go up the escalator. Well, DUH....it's the only choice. I saw some Disney signs and raised my camera....and the lady yelled "NO!! NO pictures inside the terminal!!" Scared the bejeebers out of me. I put the camera away.
The concierge check in was straight in front of the elevators, but the CM's at the top of the escalator tried to steer us automatically to the regular check in line. I had to tell them that I was headed for the concierge check in. There were a lot of check in windows open all in a line to your left. And also down to the left was the Castaway Club checkin line. We got lucky, and they let my parents check in with us.
You are then directed to the right, where you enter an area of the terminal that has a lot of seating to await being called to board. They issued numbers to all but concierge as you checked in, and they boarded by these numbers. There was a band playing, and Mickey was there to get pics done.
They were already calling Group 3 when we got there, so they led us to the front of the line, where they have x-ray machines. After that, I thought we'd walk up a gangway....instead, we were outside the back of the terminal, on a walkway, leading to the gangway. Along the walkway, they had DCL photog's taking Embarkation photos. Before we got on the ship, we had to use the hand sanitizer machine. Kind of like the gel stuff.
We finally walked across the gangway, and were on Deck 3, mid ship. They announced our names (my Dad said he was Warren Buffet from Omaha...thinks he's funny) and they were basically pushing everyone to go to Parrot Cay. Topsiders wasn't open yet. By this time it was approximately 1:30...so I sent the family to PC, and I went to Sessions for the concierge meet & greet.
They all said the shrimp was plentiful and lunch was great.
I thought they would be done eating, so I went upstairs to the room. This was the earliest I had ever seen people allowed to go to their staterooms. None of my family was there yet, so I went in the room to take pictures before they all came in and made a mess. Now is my time to 'fess up.....we were in room #8530......the Roy. It definitely took my breath away. The downside to that much space....packing at the end...our stuff was spread everywhere and I am really tidy and keep things organized everyday!
Anyway....after I took pics & vdeo, I went back down to Deck 3 and ran into the family....they were just coming out of Parrot Cay! They must have had 10 helpings! I wanted to surprise the family with our room, so I made everyone go see Grams & Poppy's room first. They were in 7636, a very large handicap, with a huge, deep verandah. I must admit, I was jealous of their nice verandah. Ours was long....but narrow.
Then we trouped up to our room. I thought the kids were going to DIE. And Jay told me that it was decadent. (For him, that means a disgusting waste of money). But, as he said....it's MY money. I pay for the cruises.
Okay...what did we do next???
Will continue on a 2nd post while I gather my thoughts. Must be the pain pill kicking in.

I KNOW what I did next! I called Barb! LOL
After that, my phone rang with a few more friends. I'm amazed that they kept track of the time, since they are on the East coast.
Sat down to look through the Nav to see what we wanted to do that night. Our bags had not arrived yet, but my parents' had. Lucky Mom was all unpacked before the sail-away.
The opening night show was the comedy of Gary DeLena and the magic of Freddy Fusion. I decided to unpack, rather than go to the show. Anyway, I got ahead of myself.
As we were donning our life jackets, another friend called. Hard to hold a cell phone up with all that padding. Since it was cool in CA, the drill wasn't too bad.
We went back upstairs and got ready to head to the sail away party.
Grabbed a table in one of the little rotunda areas right by the Goofy pool and had a couple of Konk Coolers. I was really swinging when the music started. I have most of the party on video. I didn't try to hold the camera up the whole time, I set it on the rail of the area we were at, mostly just to have the music.
Once the ship started to pull out.....a little later than the stated time of 5:30, because the embarkation process was so slow.....we went up on Deck 10 to take pics and wave at the CM's in port. I asked, and these people were not DCL employees, in spite of the Disney uniform. They worked for the port authority in L.A.
Went down and unpacked. I got to take my time about it, which was good....I had the toiletries divided between all of our luggage, so it took a while to set up each bathroom. Tid bit: there are NINE telephones in the Roy. And 4 Tv's. One of the TV's was in the master bathroom. I turned it on once, just to say I did it. Jay & Jared spend a lot of time on sea days watching movies on the tv, and at night...I never do. I'm the one walking around picking up the discarded dirty clothing and such, so the room steward doesn't think we are pigs.
OH! I forgot something weird. I walked out of our room, when I had taken pics and was looking for the family. There was a man on the phone in the elevator lobby, YELLING at Guest Services. He had a maintenance worker with him. The poor employee looked like he wanted to die. The guy was yelling that his balcony was filthy, the room was dirty, he couldn't find his room steward, and that he had been told his bags would be in his room FIRST THING, but they weren't and he said he had medication in them that he needed. My first thought was "Why would you pack your meds in your checked luggage?".....but then I heard him yelling that he was in room 8030....correct room number....but he kept saying he was in the ROY! I stood there trying to decide what, if anything, I could/should do. I finally went over and told the CM that this man was NOT in the Roy, that we were...and asked him to please tell the man that he was in the WALT. I didn't want anyone to think that was us being so rude. I even went to Guest Services later, to make sure they knew it wasn't us. They did. This guy had sailed with them before. How embarrassing. I saw him quite a few times after that, and he was very rude no matter what the situation. And they had 2 families sharing the room and the cost.
Anyway, I digress......
After I finished the unpacking, I walked around the ship a little. It was really empty. Most people were either at dinner or at the show.
I went to Treasure Ketch and made my first purchase....special charms they have with each of the port names on one side and Disney Cruise Line on the other. This saved me time in the ports, as I always buy a charm from each stop we make! Plus, it's great, because they have DCL on them.
We had casual dinner at Parrot Cay, so I didn't need to prepare myself much. I stopped at the Limited Edition pin cart. They only have it set up in the evenings between 7:30 and 8:30. I was surprised that each time I went by, there was never a crowd or a line. Must not have been a bunch of collectors onboard. I went ahead right then and got the Magic to Mexico pin and the Artist's & Captain's Choice pins. They allowed two pins of each limited edition per stateroom, per day. More generous than at Christmas.
That first night in Parrot Cay didn't have any special theming....I can let you know what was offered on the menu tomorrow...the menus are in my bedroom, and Jay's asleep in there. I can see waking him up. saying "I'm just getting the menus so that I can tell everyone what we ate!"
We had late seating, and didn't finish most nights until 10 pm or after. After dinner the first night, we went to Rockin' Bar D to watch Match Your Mate. My parents were chosen as the longest-married couple, and they were hysterical. Way too much info for me to hear!! Needless to say, from then on, half the staff and half the passengers knew them by name. They won. They were given a bottle of champagne, but they don't drink, so they traded with the 2nd place couple, who got some cool souvenir mugs. The sliver-metal kind that keep your coffee hot...and they said "Game Show Winner" or something like that on them. The younger couple was tickled pink with the champagne, and carried it to their room, ice bucket and all!
After that, we said our good-nights, and I went up and lounged on the verandah until I got drowsy. That's one thing that I really, really miss. The sound of the waves.
It was chilly....and even more bumpy than when we cross the Gulf Stream leaving Florida. For the first time ever, even I felt a little queasy. Or was that the drinks I'd had?? But Jay & I both love when the ship is rocking, and we get rocked to sleep.
We had to move our clocks and watched FORWARD one hour this night. Lost an hour. CM's weren't delighted with that!
The kids had wandered the ship, but hadn't yet worked up the courage to go to the Stack "alone". They were spoiled by having so many friends on the Christmas cruise that we had met before, through pre-cruise DIS meets.
So for at least the first night, the kids were in bed about the same time we were...midnight or so.

Another couple random things. I had asked concierge if we could do the Galley Tour. They said that they weren't doing it because of the higher risk of germs. I still think that they did the handwashing (before you are allowed to enter each dining room, too!) more because it was Mexico than anything else. We never ran into, or overheard anyone who said they were ill.
And, we asked about a Bridge Tour. We were allowed to do the tour that everyone can do...on the catwalk above the bridge....but we were told that we couldn't go on the actual bridge. I know some people who had gotten to do that with Capt Thord, but Capt Tom is a little more strict, I think.
Take the opportunity to do the Bridge Tour, though, if you haven't. They will be removing the catwalk during drydock this fall. So it will be your only chance.
That's it for DAY ONE. I promise it gets more exciting......

Good night!

Vickie, more than a year ago, before DCL made the announcement that they were doing West Coast cruises (it had been rumored)...I sent a fax to Inventory Control, asking for a Cat 1, 2, or 3 for ANY Magic sailing any date in the summer of 2005. I would have never dreamed of a Cat 1 being open (and probably really couldn't afford it, thank goodness for credit cards!) but they called me on that Friday, a month before the June 4th cruise, and I couldn't resist...no matter the cost. I wanted so badly to go while the Magic was so close.
This may sound stupid, but....now that I've done it, I don't need to do it again. Way too much money for just having a bigger room.

justmestace One more milimeter and it would have been a home run! As it was said:
He became an instant star. To say we were all proud would be an understatement!:cool1:

Sounds exciting! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: It is amazing how happy we are when our kids are. That is just wonderful and bragging is your right!

Cathy

I am loving your trip reports so far Stacey! The good thing this time is I can picture things since I've been there. I even saw the virtual tour of the Roy so I can picture it. It sounds wonderful. What do you have to show to get a handicapped suite? I was wondering about my parents if they had a walker but no wheelchair. It is hard to get by the bed with a walker and with the rocking Dad might need that...

Cathy

When I called to make Mom and Dad's reservation, I just told them that they needed a handicap room. She still needs the support bars in the bathroom and such. As it turned out, we also got her one of the wheelchairs onboard, and could take it off the ship as needed too. It was a lifesaver.
After you book the room, they fax you a medical form to have your doctor sign, saying that they need the handicap room, and then you fax it back to DCL.
My parents got lucky, too. They were booked in 7638, roomy handicap, but smaller verandah. At the last minute, a family of 4 with a young boy who had just broken his leg, needed a handicap room that slept 4....so my parents got moved over to 7636 (much bigger verandah) because it only sleeps 3. Very nice switch!

I think I said somewhere back there that I would write a MINI report! Looks like a book already! Sorry! Will add more this afternoon.

Stacey - :cheer2: :cheer2: Congratulations to Jared :cheer2: :cheer2: Enjoying your trip report! I wish you could have been on our cruise so that we could have toured the "ROY!!" Did Jordan take part in the Talent Show? Did she enjoy it??

Hi Jenny!

If I'd been on the August cruise, we would have had two connecting Cat 6's....nothing to look at there...but I see what you're saying. I have pics I'll get posted soon.
Yes, Jordan danced in the talent show to a song called "Crazy In Love" by Beyonce and JayZ.... she did some ballet, some jazz and some hip-hop. She gt some loud cheers. There were a couple of little gals who were great singers, one who did a hula type dance that was marvelous, and a very talented pianist. Lots of talent among Disney kids!!

Stacey - I would like to see a Cat. 6 too!! We are in a Secret Porthole Room - and would be interested in seeing the variety of cabins! Sounds like Jordan did a great dance!! Brynee will wait and see how she feels about signing up for the talent show. She just found out she is a "napkin" in Beauty and the Beast :goodvibes !
