Aug 27, 2012 Seattle to Skagway Sailing

Ooh, Virgin is a great airline to travel on! I love their planes.

I'm so excited for the FE exchange. I really hope some of you sign up to do it with me. Doing it alone won't be too fun. :) I promise not to give out lame dollar store stuff! I have some really great ideas for some nice gifts.

Ahoy fellow cruisers!

After just finishing up 7 magical days on the Fantasy ( which is amazing btw) we decided to book to Alaska this summer!!! Looking forward to a week with Donald Duck again.... Anyways there will be 4 of us all over the age of 25. Is there a fish extender group??? I would love to get in it.

Hi Krista! Aw, it sounds like you were just on the cruise my friend Amy and her daughter were on. They just got back as well!

We don't have a ton of FE participants yet, but go ahead and sign up on the spreadsheet! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Au6ZjSAKNCdBdGNIa0hpRmFPQVpwaEttZF9xUWsyc1E#gid=0

Getting close! We just booked our pre cruise stay. We've also got 2 excursions booked that we booked independently, whale watching and ziplining. Also hoping to book a glacier landing when our booking window opens!

Where are you guys staying pre-cruise? It's fun to know where people are staying in my city :)

We're also thinking about the Pan Pacific. We also like the Fairmont and Edgewater and they were all priced pretty similarly. We're planning on staying in Seattle for two days after the cruise so we'll probably go with two different hotels for both ends of our trip.

I haven't stayed there myself, but it is a lovely hotel and a good location. A good family friend owns one of the shops in the adjacent shopping center - it's called Clover House and is totally adorable.

Anyone else think it's wierd that our cruise is a Monday to a Monday? Why not Sat-Sat?

My guess it was the only way to have port access. Many other cruise lines have already been doing Alaska for years and probably have taken the most ideal time slots for docking.

Hmm, that's interesting. That must be it.

It does seem a little strange but I read somewhere (I can't recall where with all the information I have been reading) that the Wonder is the only ship at pier 91 for the entire season except for one other Monday when the World will be there as well.

Our plans for the day before the cruise is to see the Chihuly exhibit, walk around Pike place, and have dinner. Then we are going to wake up, order room service, and then head for the port!

Hey everyone! It looks like my family will be joining you all on this cruise. We've had it booked since they first released the Seattle itineraries but then DH lost his job last summer and we weren't sure if we would be able to do it. Well it looks like we are able to pay it off next week and finally get to planning our adventure!

We're from the Seattle area, Monroe actually for those familiar with the region. So no airfare was a huge attraction for us. We have three girls who will be coming with us on their first cruise ever and they don't even know about it yet! They will be 10, 7 and 5 when we set sail. This will actually be our youngest's first Disney vacation, she is a Disneyland souvenier! DH and I have cruised before but only once on DCL for our honeymoon back in 2000 on the Wonder. I'm so excited to be able to go back to the ship that started it all!

I've never been to Alaska, so if anyone has suggestions on good excursions for families, I'd love to hear them. We're trying to keep this a secret from our girls right up until the day we leave so I can't even ask them what they'd like to do. I imagine they would like to see some sled dogs though.

Hi! We have a Disneyland souvenir and a Wonder souvenir lol!

Have you looked through the excursions on the DCL site to get ideas? You can also visit cruisecritic.com and read the Alaska port of call section. There are a few different dog sledding excursions available some on snow and some in a cart. The train in Skagway gets lots of rave reviews although I haven't done it. Disney has a train offering where the kids do an art project for part of the train ride.

Well hello, Love_Tink! We're neighbors; I live in Duvall :) No airfare is definitely huge!!

How fun it will be to have someone on our cruise that is near us! I have a 5 year old girl and a 2 year old boy. We're going to do the train in skagway (white pass, I think it's called) and so far that's all we have planned. There is a big alaska excursion thread on the cruise board somewhere that I've been reading through and that's been helpful.

Make sure you sign up for the FE exchange! Do you know what that is? If not here is a thread about it, but your kids are the perfect age for it. http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=33184281&postcount=2

Is anyone here thinking of going on the deadliest catch excursion? My husband would love to do that but he said it would be fun to do with someone else. Was thinking it would be great if someone else from this group was doing it too!

DH and I are also cruising. First time to Alaska. We will be celebrating our 41st anniversary as well as DH's 65th birthday and my 60th birthday.

We are driving to Seattle from Ontario, Canada. Does anyone have any recommendations for a hotel in Seattle. Also does anyone know what parking is like at the cruise terminal.

Thanks for the help

Remember the magic!!

JadedJoJo, IrishCowboy, anyone else who's done a large number of DCL cruises:

I've wondered this for a long time and ya'll are in the best position to answer.

How do things change when you've been on the exact same cruise multiple times? At that point, I assume you've seen what you wanted to see in the various ports and you've seen all the shows. Do you just sit back and enjoy the cruise experience? Do your wander the ports on your own or enjoy having an empty ship to yourselves? Do you continue to go to the evening shows? I would expect each identical cruise to have diminishing returns from an experience/entertainment value. What do you do to keep things fresh? I've thought of re-booking itineraries that I've already experienced (especially if I can find a can't pass up deal!), but these thoughts hold me back. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
David

I'm so sorry I didn't see this post until now! I have gotten no updates about new posts or messages. :guilty:

Indeed, most of our cruises have been on the Nassau/ Castaway Cay route. I can tell you that because of that, we've seen a LOT of Nassau, lol. We always switch it up though. On our last B2B, we did exploring of downtown Nassau, and the second leg we just stayed onboard and explored the Dream. On other trips, we've collected the coupons that they give you, and try to get all of the free (or nearly free) stuff. We've been to the straw market (not my cup of tea, but I can say we've done it!), rented water taxis to Atlantis and Cabbage Beach, snuck in to the Atlantis aquarium (free! Twice!! LOL), explored the downtown area near the Hilton, visited other beaches, and of course sometimes we just stay onboard and play. And at CC... well, we can never grow tired of CC :D. But we switch it up there too. One trip, we might go to the adult beach and veg out. Another time, we bring snorkel gear and explore as much as possible. Several other times, we've rented bikes and explored the island (huge favorite of ours!). One time we did the scavenger hunt (very fun! :D), a few times we went to the family beach and rode on the slides in Pelican Plunge, camped out in the hammocks, and snorkeled in the roped off area. And I am a photographer, so every trip to CC involves me snapping pics. I could very well write a book about all of the things we've seen and done in our trips to CC- we can always find new things to do, people to talk to, and things to try. Overall though, I can say that we are a bit tired of Nassau, so on our last cruise we decided it was our last B2B and our last Bahamas itinerary for a while. We've mostly done that route for the deals and the B2B for double dipping at CC (plus you feel like a celebrity on a B2B :D). As for stuff onboard... you may think we are crazy, but we've never done a single stage show on any cruise (as far as the Broadway type productions like "Golden Mickeys" go. We have seen the special acts, like the magic act, ventriloquist, etc). My hubby is not the stage show kind of person at all (in fact, I had to chuckle a little just thinking about him watching a stage show), and even as I may enjoy it, we always do second dinner seating, so the sun is going down as the show is going on. My sunset pics come first LOL. As far as diminishing returns though... I can tell you that every trip is fantastic, and we've never had a lesser experience. I can say we didn't enjoy the Dream as much as the Wonder, but that is from more of a personal standpoint and not a reflection on Disney or what anyone else may experience (more people meant more rude people in our experience on the Dream, unfortunately). Boy I can ramble on forever can't I! :D Well, I hope that answered your Q's!! We just love DCL to bits!

:wave2: I'm pretty sure we're going to do this excursion, we're huge fans of the show. I was thinking of booking it directly through their website and not via DCL though. It looks like it would save us a little booking it directly.
