I am just getting on the Audible bandwagon. I still love the feel of an actual book in my hand, but am trying out some audiobooks. I just bought Matthew McConaughey's new memoir since he is the narrator 😍🥰🤩

Any books you recommend that you felt the experience was enhanced by listening versus reading?

A lot of the Hollywood memoirs are read by the author and that adds to it IMHO. Some I've enjoyed:

--The Dangerous Animals Club by Stephen Tobolowsky

--Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe

--I Remember Me by Carl Reiner

--But Enough About Me by Burt Reynolds

--Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen

The Harry Potter books: I've never read them, but DW and I are listening to them on long trips. The narrator (Jim Dale) is outstanding and makes it a very enjoyable listen.

Stephen King reads his own "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft". King can be pretty funny as well.

Is McConaughey's memoir pretty good or is it just... alright, alright, alright?

I just listened to The Girl with the Louding voice, the Nigerian accents were good. I also like Kate Morton’s narration. I did not like the narration for Where the Crawdads Sing.

I am also someone who prefers to read a physical book, however I also spend a lot of time in a tractor. So I gave Audible a try and I really liked it - but I have only listened to the Harry Potter books (which I have read so many times it is really like having a old familiar TV show on in the background) and 4 or 5 of the Great Courses books. I've also enjoyed listening to Lucy Worsley books and a few others about history.

The entire Harry Potter Series is extraordinarily calming to listen to for me, as are all the Mitch Albom books, his voice is very soothing and these are all family friendly IMO.

My first thought was the Harry Potter series. Jim Dale is the best and makes the stories that much more enjoyable.

Most of the Nora Roberts stories are also good listens.

And I agree with others that stories read by people whose voices you are already familiar with are good also.
Betty White and Dick Van Dyke come to mind.

If you want to get a good listen for Harry Potter, track don't the Stephen Fry read ones.

I haven’t done Audible since my trial subscription ran out about 15 years ago but I do download tons of audio-books from my local library. I love the southern (but not too southern) accent on the guy that reads all the John Grisham stuff and the proper British lady that reads Philipa Gregory’s works.

I've listened to some older BBC radio shows(?) that were dramatization of books, such as Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe and some Jeeves and Wooster stories. I loved hearing a real cast of character narrators.

The Dutch House by Ann Pachett. It is narrated by Tom Hanks. It’s a wonderful book, and Tom does a superb job reading it. It felt like having my grandpa read me a story.
Hmm- that's good to know, I have this book on hold at my library-I'm #39 on the list though, it's probably going to be months before I can read it! I've never tried Audible or the audio books before, didn't think I would like it as much as physically reading the book myself. I may have to give it a try, I do enjoy podcasts.

That would be a great first audiobook to try.

It took me a while to warm up to the idea of listening to a book. I ran into an acquaintance a few years ago who had lost a lot of weight. She told me that listening to audiobooks and taking long walks is how she did it. She’d get so into a book, she’d keep walking so she could keep listening. That really intrigued me. Ever since I listened to my first one, I was hooked. I read regular books too, but I listen to books while I do my chores, and it’s much more enjoyable! I actually look forward to chores now!
