Attraction effects Disney installed but doesn't use ( w/pics if possible )

The fantasia scene in GMR was supposed to be the tornado from Wizard of Oz.

As far as the different trains, this was something new started in spring of 2001. They used to have run 2 trains everytime, even though when it was slow they second train would be EMPTY. But someone still had to drive it. By figuring out how to run 1 train, you can free up one CM. When its busy (easter, christmas, etc) both trains will run everytime (up to 4 at a time).

Disney has once again fixed the mist on top of Everest! Someone posted a small video of it last week: http://www.flickr.com/photos/disneydena/2498686955/

I know this thread is old but I think some of the newcomers since 2007 might enjoy it. :thumbsup2

THANKS!!

As one of those "newcomers" I can say that I have really enjoyed this thread> It will certainly come in handy, too, because DH often tells me that I am crazy whenever I say, "Hey! What happened to ..."

Anyone remember when they actually had CMs IN the HM ride. There is an article on Doombuggies.com that talks about a suit of armor, but I seem to remember being scared by what my mom called "the phantom of the opera." Just recently, I saw video of the original figure they were going to use for the hatbox ghost, and I REALLY remember the CM (at DL) wearing this costume, complete with cape, top hat, and head. Does ANYONE else remember this, so that I don't feel like I'm crazy? Or at least, does anyone remember being scared by the suit of armor?

I experienced an actual CM in a suit of armor while riding the HM ride at Disneyland many years ago.

While in my doom buggy with my friend, we cruised backwards through the hall of doors as is the process in that ride. Photos peered at us, doors knocked and breathed, and statues stared as usual. We passed by the knight in shining armor when, out of nowhere, he lunged at us -- reaching into our doom buggy and scaring the pants off of both of us!!! Not a fan of anything scary or any incident that causes me to jump, I screamed and yelled, flailing my arms around frantically at the poor actor, hitting him several times. Lucky for him he had is armor on...

I later learned that the "live" knight in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion was only implemented for a few short months in the park's history. The poor knight actors were assaulted numerous times by unsuspecting riders who "freaked out" when approached by this out-of-place character-come-to-life. The live knight was soon eliminated from the Haunted Mansion ride.

While it scared me to the bone -- and I still have a hard time riding through that corridor in the ride with my eyes open -- I am extremely happy to have experienced one of Disney's very brief but impactful park experiences!

The last few times I've ridden POTC the Davey Jones Mist effect has not been on. Not sure if they've stopped using it, or if it just breaks a lot.:confused3

I agree great thread. Didn't Disney use to use a lot of the fire/smokey smell like in Universe, POTC, SSE, and Dinosaur? In POTC when the town was burning. Universe when the big bang happened (I think, only rode it twice.) SSE when Rome was burning. Dinosuar I think a volcano was involved (only rode it once or twice.) Anyway I loved that smell, I know I'm weird.

Things like that is what makes Disney so magical when you take that out all you have is fake fire in a fake town burning. It just adds so much to the scene. They sure don't skimp on the Orange smell at Soarin', or the chili burp in Stitch. Come on Disney act right.

I rode it twice last month, and the mist effect was working both times. It must just be luck of the draw whether or not you see it.

The mist in POTC was working last Thursday. I don't think I've ever ridden it and it not be on? LOL.

I love this thread :)

Great thread glad that it was brought back.
Now I have a question when Fantasmic first come to DHS did they use more effects. I have been having this argument with my mom for about 2 years she claims that something used to come out of top of the mountain other than the dragon. I don't remember any such thing. I was hoping that someone could tell me who is right.
Thanks

Oh and how about this one. Its a house in Frontierland that you can see if you take the Liberty Belle Riverboat. It used to be on fire constantly ( but never actually burned obviously ), but supposedly it was too costly too keep up, so now its just a charred house. Here you can see the flames of what once was:

Yep, I remember this!

Does anyone else remember the fire breathing dragon (ok it was more like flames coming out of a cave) to the right off the bridge in AK crossing over into Camp Minnie Mickey? I remember DS being mesmerized by this around 1999-2000 - then after that it seemed to be gone & we've never seen it again.

Yes I remember this the effect was originally going to be used for a land called beastly kingdom. It was to have dragons and unicorns and other mythical animals in it. This was never developed but they left the effect in for the first few years that the park was open. You could see it from the Discovery River Boats that no longer run anymore. There was also a dragon that was made of rocks that would spit fire and water. We maybe talking about the same thing. Hoped this helped you.

I've never seen what you're talking about but I remember reading somewhere about "Beastly Kingdome" and how the area where Camp Minnie Mickey is was supposed to be a land of mythical creatures to go with the other parts of the park; one land for creatures still living, ones who were living but are now extinct and then beastly kingdome (spelt in olde english) was to be the land of animals that never were truly alive except for in myths and fairy tales (like the dragon and unicorns, centuars etc)

Hope that helps!

When I was at Disney a couple of weeks ago I noticed that there is an elephant on the Winnie the Pooh ride that used to blow out rings of smoke. It wasn't working during my recent trip.

No, those boulders are still there and still work -- just not terribly well (or so I'm told by a friend who works there). Funny you should mention BTMR, though... as you crest that very hill, if you look immediately to the sides as you exit, you'll see two massive barn-style doors on either side. Originally, those doors were closed, and would swing open as the train approached. The problem: they didn't always open in time, and the ride would shut down. So management had them permanently welded open.

I know that at the Haunted Mansion there used to be a fog machine that would release a cloud of fog when the front doors were opened. However, complaints by an asthmatic CM caused them to disconnect the device. After the CM left the company it was never reactivated (sidebar: I actually saw the fog machine myself while on a backstage tour of the HM).
curious how i can do a backstage tour of the rides? i have seen people talk about it and was curious

"When RnR first opened, didn't the semi truck dart out at you or have his headlights off and turned them on just as it seemed you were about to hit head on?"

Toward the end of the ride there is a sign that says "Watch for oncoming traffic" Originally as you entered that area a set of headlights came at you with horns honking. Hasn't been there in a while and my wife says it never was, but I definitely remember it too.
