Attire for Dinner - Language Issues

I agree, Denise in MI! I think the OP might feel uncomfortable in jeans once he got there and saw the abundance of folks in slacks. For example, my husband wore a suit without a tie on semi-formal night and felt super underdressed. Of course, if his tablemates are dressed similarly, it might not be an issue.

Well, it seems it may vary between cruises as I'm reading here - a suit with no tie shouldn't be under what is expected for "semi-formal" IMHO - including a tie you are enough formal even for Remy... The problem is if all the dinner mates go overdressed...

I think I'll keep a shirt and a pair of pants handy, just in case. Is there an iron in the room? :-) (but suit and tie definitely I'll not pack for this trip - last year I went to a Rotary Convention in New Orleans and just took two suits to walk around)

My husband wears a suit every day for work (he gets about 5 days off a month, so every day isn't much of an exaggeration!) and I was a bit worried about formal night - it's his vacation and the last thing he'd want to do is lug around and wear a suit. SO! (I actually posted a thread inquiring about this) I'm renting a tux through DCL that will be hanging in our closet when we get on the ship. This way, we're enjoying the formal-ness of the evening (bought our 2 and 4 year olds ties for their white oxfords and khakis, they're so excited to look like daddy!) but in a way that is unique and festive.

So I guess my response to the whole affair is simply an opinion; instead of seeing it as a restriction, look at it as an opportunity to do something special. My husband and I 'dress up' all but once or twice a year... in fact, I'm actually looking forward to wearing my va va voom dress and heels while having my arm draped on my knockout of a husband's arm and escorting our dashing little boys!

I agree! Despite I prefer to be not formal, I think such moments are special for a lot of people, so it's not a so big effort we try to understand an be at least under the standards. ;-)

Check out the FAQ section on the DCL website under attire for dinner. It will give you the Dress Requirements for the different nights.
