Attention all RN's:: anyone do online RN-BSN? Or regret going back for their BSN?

Hi!

I've been an RN for many years. I'd like to pursue another aspect of nursing so I need to go back for my BSN. I'm nervous because I'm certainly not young anymore plus after spending thousands, there's no guarantee of a better job.

There is a one night a week program only about 10 min from my house. RN-BSN in 16 months. PRICEY! I heard about exclusive online programs . Anyone ever do this?

Anyone go back and regret it?

Western governs university is the program I plan to use to bridge my RN over to a BSN . The program is available in many states and worth a look at. You do have to be employed as an RN while going through the program

A lot of my fellow classmates/ coworkers have done their RN-BSN via Slippery Rock ( I am about an hour north of the Burgh) online one. When I go back for my BSN that is where I will be taking the classes. I dont have time to go to a class on campus.

I can't answer about the online program since I did mine the traditional way, but I just wanted to add my 2cents and say I don't think you will regret doing it.
It opens some different doors, and plus if you ever want to pursue a graduate degree you would need it.

I was one 3 credit course shy of getting my BSN just prior to being diagnosed with cancer. I had my Associate RN since 1991 and since I worked for the college I was going to school for free.
I never realized how much I wanted it back then but I really want to get the degree now.
I am disabled and don't work any longer and can't go back to work but I am planning on calling the director ot the school of Nursing when they come back from winter break to ask if I can either take the course or have it waived just to have those 3 letters after my name. I have no idea why I feel so strong about it now but I do want the degree.
I don't think you will ever regret it, having a BSN will enable you to work in a manegerial position rather than floor nursing.

I am currently doing my RN-BSN through VCU. I live close to the school and took one class in person last semester and the rest online but I believe they can all be done online. I don't think I will regret having my BSN. At least in the area that I live in, many hospitals want all their floor nurses to have their BSN and don't like to hire RNs with associates degrees. I know I will not regret having my BSN and I don't know of anyone I work with that regrets theirs either.

I work in a surgery center at the moment, per diem. I love my job but the hours are so unpredictable. I have a child going to college in a few years and need to get a "big girl" job soon. My youngest is 9 so I figured in the 2,years it will take me to get my BSN she will be a little more mature when mommy gets a full time job.

I would love to work in the pharmaceutical field. I have a neighbor who's a chemist and tells me they are always looking for nurses. Minimal education : BSN.

Just a thought, I am presently working on an MSN, but any way, many employers are now requiring BSN, but beware of the online programs. I mean the strictly online things from schools that only exist online. In competitive job markets more weight is being given to degrees from actual, established brick and mortar universities. Also, some are not accredited.

DH is currently doing a strictly online BSN program through Eastern Illinois University. We live fairly close to EIU but several of the students do not. It is a 2 yr program and has been good so far.

I did an RN-BSN program at UTA It is by far the cheapest out there. I did have issues with some of the administrative paper work - things getting lost or routed the wrong place. I think it might have to do with the fact that I took a few course there 20 yrs ago and switching me from an inactive student to current was a bear.

The online aspect can be confusing for someone that hasn't been in school for many years just understand that aspect of doing an online program. It is doable just be patient and know you can do it.

You will only regret it if you go someplace like University of Phoenix or another for profit, online school.

Even though they are trying to up their credibility and they are making the classes more rigorous, the graduates are still having a very difficult time. This is still a tough market for those looking for office and administrative jobs. And these people graduate with a ton of debt. If the degree only brings your credibility down or gives you no additional credibility - it isn't worth your time, energy, or hard earned money.


Go to a state school. Many of them are placing more and more of their curricula online and you can arrange some of the clinical rotations (yes, you should have some clinical rotations) near your home. There are several programs where you can visit the campus several times a month or even just semester, or can be video transmitted in via a satellite campus.

20 of us did Ohio University online RN to BSN. No clinicals, only a few college like classes to take like stats. Finished in 2 years, took one class at a time so tuition reimbursement covered the classes.

I did my BSN completion at Case Western. It did require "on campus intensives" though. I don't know what it is like now. It was very expensive, but I did not have the time for classes that I had to attend.
This was in 96. so been awhile.
I loved the on line courses.
I would do it again in a heartbeat.

My friend I went to nursing school with is doing hers through OU. I'll have to check them out again.

The school I was looking at is local with a satellite very close to my house. No clinicals. I looked at a couple schools that required clinicals. I quickly looked somewhere else. No thanks. I've been an RN 23 years , I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing.

I did RN to BSN through Indiana State University. I had a good experience and thought it was worth it. But I also wanted to eventually get my masters (which I just completed in June). You def have to have self motivation and good time management for online classes (which I lack ) but it was a great way to get my BSN. Would do it again in a second.
