I'm really just venting and wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what your experience was with the bank. I went to the ATM at lunch this afternoon. This particular ATM was my bank's ATM machine (First Tennessee). I wanted to withdraw $200. I inserted my card, pulled it back out, entered all the information as usual and it took a little longer than usual to process but then the message "transaction complete" came up followed by a "temporarily out of service" message, and no money, no reciept :sad2: . I called the bank to let them know what happened and they told me that my account did show that it deducted the $200 and to check back tomorrow to see if it would show back up on my account. If it has not then I need to go to the bank and fill out a dispute form.
Apparently they will have to check the ATM to see if it is over by $200.

Nowadays, with DH's hours cut back, $200 is quite a bit of money to us.

I was just wondering if anyone else had ever experienced this and if it was resolved in your favor :confused3

Thanks!

It happened to me once. I went straigt to the bank and the teller filled out a paper for me. I had my money back into my account in a few days.

Generally, all ATM transactions are recorded on tape. The bank should easily be able to see on the tape that you didn't get any cash.

We had something similar happen once. Dh went to deposit some money and for some unknown reason entered in $100 LESS than he actually deposited.

It did take a couple of days but we did get our money credited to our account.

Good luck

I would have marched right into the nearby branch and filled out a form right then and there. IMO you should fill out the dispute form today or tomorrow first thing! If you wait they might say you took too long to report it, who knows what the person on the phone wrote down.

Not exactly the same, but I once took out $10 but they subtracted $100 from my account! :faint: I called my bank, gave them the receipt (which also said $10) and they contacted the people that owned the ATM (it was a third party ATM) and they said "why yes, our machine WAS over by $90 that day!". I got my money back. It was years ago but I don't think it took more than a few days.

not the same again... but once I deposited a check and in the middle of the deposit the machine went down - it took4 days for it be corrected because it was a friday afternoon...

Thanks guys.

I work at Vanderbilt hospital which is HUGE and there is an ATM for my bank located inside the children's hospital. Trust me I was furious:mad:. The closest bank is about a mile down the road and I was on my lunch break when it happened, otherwise I most certainly would have been in that bank filling out the paperwork immediately. I guess it's a good thing that I had time to calm down before I go to the bank or there's really no telling what I might have said :rolleyes1 :scared: ....

but believe me when I say I will be in that bank early tomorrow ;)

This just happened to me about a month ago. I was going to take out cash to pay my sitter. It took a really long time & then I got the thanks and come again screen. The bank had not opened yet for the day. I called the telephone banking center & they filed a dispute for me. I had the money back in about 2 business days. It was definitely a pain though!

I work in a bank and that is the normal procedure. They add the cash in the machine everyday to see if there are outages. They always have the customer fill out dispute papers. The reason they balance the machine every day is to see if there are really outages. There are people who like to claim the machine took their money when it really didn't, so they balance it everyday to make sure.

Any transaction recording device, would still indicate the money had been received. Our Journal method is a diskette but the previous bank I worked for was actually a paper journal. Most likely the bank will have to audit their ATM to verify funds were not received. In all three financials that I have worked for, the ATM was audited only once per week. So, it could take a few days to have it corrected.
I do agree with those who said you should have filled out the form right away. Or, they should have taken your information with a follow-up plan already provided to you.

I think I would've felt alot better had they let me file a dispute over the phone. I called 2 different numbers, the local branch and the customer service number. Neither really gave me the option to file the dispute today, they both said wait to see if the money shows back up in my account by tomorrow and if it has not to come in tomorrow and file the dispute. :confused3

I can understand that. Keep their names for your documentation. :)

I had a problem with an ATM at a First Tennessee Bank once. I put in to withdraw $200.00, however, it only gave me $40.00. I left my car parked at the ATM (with a long line of furious people behind me) and went into the bank. When I told them what happenned they all looked at me like I was trying to scam them, but I refused to leave without my money. Sure enough, they opened up the machine and found the rest of my money that had been torn to shreds and had gotten stuck.

Good Luck - hopefully they can fix your account ASAP.

This happened to me, but not at my own bank. The banks were both closed at that time, but I called my own bank's customer service. They credited my account with the $300 and I got a notice in the mail a few days later affirming the credit. Good luck to you.

I once went to the drive up ATM and withdrew $300. Well, bills slid out and down into the machine instead of coming straight out so I could grab them - I saw it go. I got out of the car to see if I could reach them. Well, as I was fooling with that, the machine sucked my ATM card back in.

This was a Saturday, so nothing I could really do until Monday. A weekend with no cash and no ATM card. It get sorted out, just took about a week.

It happened to me before and the bank I was at was not my normal bank. The one clerk also said it had been happeneing a lot with that machine. I had my money back within a few days but it was very irritating because the bank it happened at couldn't do much and I did have a receipt and my bank stated that if they did not get the money back in a couple of days they would file necessary complaints for me especially since it was something that was happening often.

I work at a bank and deal with this all the time as part part my job. While we are not required to give credit right away 90% of the time we will. Especially if you are a customer in good standing. We would have begun the dispute process for you over the phone and sent it out in the mail for a signature. I have to say that for all of the ATM transactions that my bank processes it really doesn't happen that often.

It happened to me, in Florida, on vacation. It did turn out in my favor. I had the money back in my account in a few days.
