Waiting for plumber. Have a bad feeling.

My parents' house was built in 1989 with copper pipes. They've had to replace a lot of it with PEX piping over the years.
Interesting. My parents house was built in 1960 with copper pipes and I sold it in 2013 and NONE of the plumbing was ever touched. And when I remodeled my house, built in 1979 with copper pipes, the plumbing contractor was in the middle of replacing PEX tubing that rodents had chewed through.

Sacramentos water supply is from dams in the mountains and is naturally soft and easy on pipes

Our house was built in 2014. The water line into the house is copper, drain lines are pvc. This is a common set up here.

My old house built in 1957 has some cast iron drain pipes and some PVC. Feed lines are all copper. My plumber still swears by copper.

My house being built now is all the plastic stuff. My plumber didn’t do any of the inside plumbing. The contractor got whoever they wanted. They did a fine job but the newer plastic is what most use today. My plumber installed the septic system and water line from the meter to the house.

I’ll add, most houses here have basements or at least crawl spaces. That I think changes plumbing repairs since things are more accessible. I had a clogged drain pipe under the basement floor. The plumber just opened the clean out in the yard and found the problem with a snake. He was able to see inside the pipe by opening the basement clean out.

We have VERY hard water here. A portion of our municipal water is from wells. As a matter of fact they just started drilling a new well 2 blocks from my house.

Very hard Massachusetts well water. The copper developed pinhole leaks everywhere.

Never seen that with hard water. Mineral deposits, yes. The City of Folsom, which is in Sacramento county did have a major problem with pinhole leaks in copper pipes but that was determined to be cause by a ph problem, not a hard water issue.

Why on earth would they draw groundwater in the central valley of California when all that does is cause subsidence? It is a very bad idea.

Because it is a well to draw water from in dry years, and a storage facility using the underground aquifers to store water in wet years. Kind of a great idea, actually.

Sucking down water from precious aquifers so they can grow rice in a dry climate? Not wise. They should shut down the wells and redirect the water from the rice paddies to city water supplies.

No, they are pumping surplus surface water into the aquifer in wet years Pretty wise actually.

I had a similar situation and only figured out there was a leak when my water bill doubled and we started hearing a faint running sound in the laundry room. We ended up rerouting just a section instead of going for the full-blown repipe at the time but I still keep an eye out for any sudden changes in water usage. When I had this problem, my friends recommended AnytimePlumbing since they deal with emergencies and offer things like reroutes, repipes, and sometimes suggest water treatment systems to help prevent future pipe issues.
