I see so many people who drive to Bangor, etc. to fly to Orlando.

I've never taken the auto train, but I'm very tempted to try it.

Has anyone taken the auto train?

We're a family of 5, who have driven Halifax to Ottawa many times (we have family there) and never really consider flying Halifax to Ottawa because of th cost. We have the trip down to a routine of leaving during the evening, driving all night (my wife and I trade when tired) and arriving the next morning. We usually recover by afternoon or so (we're getting some sleep while the other drives, too).

The drive time Hfx to Lorton, VA is very similar to the Hfx->Ott trip.

The cost looks like $863 USD for all 5 of us round trip. Plus, we wouldn't need a rental car (we already have an off-site timeshare on I-drive).

We have a jetta diesel (1000km/tank), even at current fuel prices I think that would be about $300 round trip.

The auto train leaves VA at 4pm, goes all night (giving DW & I time to recover) and arrives Sanford (near Orlando) by 9:30am next morning.

$863 (train fare) + $300 (diesel) - $300 (avoid rental car) = $863 total
$863 / 5 = $172.50/person.

At that rate, we could go every year!

I expect this makes more difference to larger families, less difference for couples.

The only down side is the length of time spent getting there. We'd just leave earlier/come back later. If we lose 2 extra days to traveling, we could afford that time easier than the air fare $$$.

Does Air Transat have the times fo the Halifax to Orlando flights available.
It seems that the Sat flight back to Halifax must get in after Midnight.

Hi from western NB. My family and I are flying from Boston in late feb for $209 pp taxes and airport fees in on Delta nonstop to Orlando.BUT theres a charter company that flys from BANGOR to ORLANDO, I forget the name but check the Bangor airport website They had sum amazing rates that unfortunatley didnt work with the dates we had but if ur flexible it might be a good option to save a few $ and the drive further down the east coast .I dont mind driving and have driven to Florida several times ,we actually had planned on driving this time as well as it would be our 3 daughters first big trip anywhere and our son, his first trip to disney. We look at the drive as part of the fun:thumbsup2 of going "south", just this year with fuel and time constraints we feel flying in will be a better option. So if any of you are going in late feb , 1st of march hope to see you there ,we'll be the "organised chaos family",If your going after that Im really sorry our kids broke it whatever it is , just put it on our room ok? :lmao: dw , dh , dd's 5 :dance3: ds 9
Its me again, Just checked the airports website and the airline is Allegiant Air
http://www.allegiantair.com/aaIndex.php . Right now it looks like they're only taking reservations until Jan 31,09 but any travel agent shoould be able to tell you more about them. Flights for this jan look like $99 each way pp from Bangor to Orlando/Sanford airport, Still not a bad price but only on selected dates, hope this helps someone.

Wow, Ive heard of the service before but never really considered it but with gas prices so high and when you consider Va is an easy 2 day drive from here and your saving,if you drove the whole distance to Orlando 2 more hotel stays each way so thatd be let say between $4-600. Plus a lot of us in Atlantic Canada have never traveled by train before ,especially kids ,itd be fun just doing that alone ,then get to go to Disney World after?. Going home to avoid the 95 ,take 64 over to 81 andyou could do Hershey and take advatage of Penn, tax free clothing there at the outlets. I cant believe I just endorsed shopping, if my wife reads this I'll never hear the end of it....

There's a good auto train thread on these boards here:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=402667

DW isn't thrilled about losing a 2nd day (each way) to driving down to VA.

So now we're looking at flying from Bangor. I think there are many people in this thread who do it regularly, so I'm not too worried.

It always comes down to a time-money trade off.
From cheapest & longest:
-drive the whole way
-auto train
-drive to Bangor (Boston, etc.) then fly
-fly from Halifax (we're right next to the airport)

Every time I price the Cat ferry, I can't justify it. Maybe it's better for people from Yarmouth, that would have to drive back. Maybe I'll price the digby ferry just for fun.

No, there times are not out yet (only the dates), but Yes, I think you are correct on the late return. It is my understanding that the flight gets in late. At least I hope so, that way I get in another day.

We have tickets booked departing April 22 @0800 and returning on May 6'th @ 1640. I know that times are always subject to change and this is returning on a Wednesday.

This is an amazing deal for us! We have a free ride down to Florida but then need to fly back at the end of January. The lowest price I could find was $238 pp until now. Now we can both fly back for that price. You have no idea how you just made my day!

I'd love to join your group! I currently live in Ottawa, but both DH and I are Newfoundlanders, we're just displaced right now!!:rotfl:

No problem Mr and Mrs Smith, your quite welcome but uhhh if you have room going down I dont eat much and im really quiet in the car .....lol

haha...I some how doubt we could squeeze ya in. My parents winter down there and we are staying with them for a month. So I imagine we'll have quite a bit of stuff. Maybe we could invest in a roof rack, although the drive down can be a bit nippy up there that time of year. :)

Planning a grand gathering for 20-25 people August 2010. Dh and DD and I may make a trip to "scout" everything out before then.( for the good of the Grand Gathering of course ):rolleyes1. Does anyone have any info on Charter Flights. If I booked 25 people would I get a discount?. We spent a week in California this MArch and fell in love with Disneyland and can't wait to spend a couple of weeks at WDW!

One option for a group that large if you are all from the same area would be to hire a bus to take you to and from the US and then fly out of Bangor,Portland Me,Manchestor Nh or even Boston Ma

I think that many people might justify chartering your plane. Seriously, you might make a few phone calls or do some googling. Anyone ever chartered a plan before?
