Atlantic Canadian WDW Fans

Boncho: We booked our flight home in September last year, direct with Westjet, but I don't think their direct flights to Orlando were posted that early. We booked retun flights in September, the hotel for the middle part of our vacation in December, flight down in January. first 3 nights in January and the last 4 in March. Talk about a mixed up arrangements, but we got good prices and I couldn't refuse. Would do it again in a minute, so I am already checking every 2-3 days for deals.

I'm from NS, with the price of gas these days is it still worth it to drive to Maine to fly out of there?

Count us in. Family of five who tow our travel trailer to WDW every year at Christmas. This Christmas will be our fifth Christmas at Fort Wilderness. We would love to meet other Disers from the Maritimes. We live just outside if Sackville N.B.

I was thinking of doing the same is the drive long and what is some of the pros and cons for using a travel trailer?

We are also going down in a large group this Christmas :)

family of 5 out of Moncton or Halifax no less that 5000 bucks.. out of Maine as low as 1800 (two weeks ago) for 5 ppl so.. you could rent a gold limo for the money you would be saving :) and drive to maine.

I never investigated that option...I'll have to run that by DH
Thanks!!

Can somebody fill me in on the details about flying out of Maine rather than Halifax?? I am thinking driving there, staying overnight in a hotel, parking vehicle at airport, flying direct to Orlando, staying at POP for 2 weeks then fly (direct) back to Maine and drive back to Halifax. I am obviously not a seasoned traveller. Can I book and American airline ticket without a Canadian departure? If so, which airline is the best to look at. Can I still book this through a travel agent? Sorry for all the stupid questions but it just seems like such a good idea!!

All 3 times that we went we flew out of Halifax, only direct once.
I'm such a rookie at this!
Thanks :thanks:

We fly out of Bangor and use Delta but there are a few other choices as well We book directly with Delta via the website. There is no problem as far having no Canadina departure. With most of the airlines you will need to connect through another airport. With Delta, it is usually Boston, Cincy, or Atlanta. I believe that Allegiant flies direct but it is to Sanford not the main Orlando airport. My wife and I are flying in August for $400 return. That is for both of us. In Fredericton, we would pay at least twice that, each.

There are numerous options for hotels that offer park and fly rates. Right at the airport there is a 4 Points Sheraton. It is very nice but you pay for staying at the airport. There are many others close by that offer shuttle service to the airport. Hampton Inn , Travelodge, Comfort Inn come to mind.

This will be our 2nd trip in August and 3rd summer trip. It has been hot but not unbearable. We always manage to go before free dining.

How did you find the crowds and weather? This will be our first time in the summer. We usually go during cooler seasons (March/May/October). Since I booked it 11 months ago (dvc), I was unaware of the free dining time. I wanted to avoid it, but unfortunately we will have a few days of it. I'm just hoping to avoid the crowds. 6 years ago, we bought into dvc and we said we would only go once a year and in October. Two years ago, we decided to change that to twice. This year we decided to go during the summer so that the children do not miss too many school days.

I'm so leery of August because I just can't stand the heat. Am I going to regret it?:(

(Not that we have much choice!)

This will be our second trip in August and we had one in July. It has been hot and humid in both months. To be honest though, it wasn't too bad. The humidity around here can get quite bad in the summer so we were somewhat accustomed to it. The temperature was always in the high 90s (into the 100s with the humidex somedays). The good thing was the temperature never changed from morning to night. Once you adjust, it is easier to deal with. We have been lucky not to get much rain, maybe 30 minutes total during the two trips.

Most days we took breaks in the afternoon and visited parks in the morning and evenings. There are also plenty of places that are air conditioned in the parks that help you get out of the heat.

The biggest tip that I can give you drink lots of water, weart a hat and sunscreen.

Have a great trip. Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you.

Thanks for the info and tips. To be honest, I thought May and October was hot and they were usually in the high 80's, sometimes low 90's. Hopefully, like you mentioned, we'll get used to it. I was hoping that you would say that it gets cooler in the evenings, but I guess that's just wishful thinking.

We have always done the tips you mentioned including spending lots of time in the air-conditioned shops. We've been to Disney quite a few times and we have a route to get from one place to another using mostly shops (especially in MK). I'm just afraid, this and all the swimming in the resort will not be enough for me. We moved to NS from ONT and we find the temp in NS is a lot more bearable.

I will try to enjoy despite the heat. I do think that I'll be spending most of the time at the resort.;)

Look at it this way, it always nice to get away and WDW is a great place to be.

ps. I have always found the pools to be terribly warm and not all that refreshing. :(

Yes the drive is long, approx. 30 hours. Travel trailer pros: you only pack once, there is no need to unpack; you can sleep in your own bed, you can cook your own food as you like, it's a home away from home; for a large group cooking some of your own meals will save you alot of money; if you stay on-site at Fort Wilderness you will have all the Disney Resort guests' perks(i.e. Extra Magic hours), and Fort Wilderness has many activities.::yes::
Cons: it's a long tow down and in December weather can be unpredictable in areas that are prone to snow storms; the high price of gas ( however gas is still much cheaper in the U.S. than the Maritimes and with our favourable exchange rate the hit isn't quite as hard.)

Definitely!:thumbsup2 :cool1:

By the way, for the first time in 6 years, last october, the SALB was very hot. I had to get out of the pool to feel cool. However, nighttime swims were great.:thumbsup2

Temporarily displaced New Brunswicker here, living in Alberta...

We finally did it! We took the plunge and made the huge splurge. 14 of us (my family plus those of my brother and two sisters) on the Disney Magic for a 7 night Eastern cruise. Was originally planning on taking everyone to WDW for a week, but when the cruise option was mentioned, the overwhelming consensus was for that.

Not that we won't do the World eventually... I'm still trying to convince DW that we should buy into DVC.

Anyway, I just booked it all thru DU, flights and pre-cruise hotel included. We are flying out of Calgary, everyone else is in NB or Maine and will fly out of Bangor.

Can't wait... only 8 months from Saturday...:rolleyes1

When are you crusing? I too am going on a cruise and then going to Disney directly after. We are on a 5 day cruise from miami to Key West and then to Cozumel, Mexico. The pricing for cruises are awesome. We got our for $209 per person. My DS is so excited!

Enjoy your trip!

Hi:

We're from NS, the YArmouth area and love to collect Disney Pins, anyone else from the MAritimes share our passion?

Charleyann,

We are on the February 28th 7-night Eastern cruise that stops in St. Croix, St. John/St. Thomas.

We didn't have a lot of choice in timing. With one niece in grade 10 and the other niece and a nephew in grade 12 at cruise time, we were pretty much confined to NB spring break.

Not that I mind... the winters last so long here in northeastern Alberta that by the end of Feb I need to go somewhere warm or people risk bodily harm by annoying me... :lmao:

Hello from just outside of Halifax.

Interested in hearing how to fly to WDW, we have driven 4x since Dec06 and plan on 2 more trips before the year is out.

I think that once I get to either NH or Portland ME, I can make the rest of the trip! I find it's the worst part, especially the trip home. So I haven't been too keen on booking flights. Maybe if I could fly from Bangor...:confused3

But to fly out of Halifax is just not an option, with 5 of us.

Anyway, our neighbours and coworkers think we're nuts! Nice to see some fellow loons out there!
