Atkins when you're sick?

I came down with strep throat and had a temp Mon/Tues :( . Since I hadn't really prepared for this, all the soup in the house had either pasta or rice in it, and it was so hard not to be able to have ice cream (thank God there wasn't any in the freezer). I almost stuck to the plan (though hardly ate) but did have wonton soup last night that my DH brought me. It's so hard to stay focused on eating well when you're achy and miserable. Have any Atkiners gone through this? Any suggestions?

I found it hard to "be sick" on Atkins, too! LOL! One thing you can have is egg drop soup. Put some chicken broth to simmer on the stove. Scramble up an egg in a bowl, then add it to the simmering soup in a stream, using a whisk to gently stir the soup. Let it cook for a few minutes. The egg will make little strands like noodles, and it is great to eat when you're feeling sick.

Hope you feel better!

I like just plain chicken or beef broth when I'm sick. And SF popsicles!! They feel great on a sore throat! ::yes::

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Thanks so much for the great suggestions! My throat is saying ice cream but my head is saying JELLO. I really appreciate your support.

I just wanted to say I hope you will feel better soon. I had strep a year or so ago and I thought I was going to die, so I know how you feel! Go easy on yourself. Your body needs nourishment to heal. Take care!

:)

I have had a horrible cough for the past week and have been eating lots of sugar laden cough syrups, cough drops and tea with honey. I tried sugar free stuff, but it just wasn't as soothing.

It was sooo obvious it kicked me out of ketosis. By the third day the 'cravings' were back and I felt hunger for the first time in weeks. I stalled in my weight loss for the past week, but I think when you are sick, you need to just go with what works. The weight will still be there to lose once you feel better.

Well, I went back on induction today, so I hope I fall right back into the low carb way of life!

Here's what I have:

SF Jello
SF Popsicles
Broth
Egg drop soup - that was a really good suggestion because the protein is needed for healing.

Don't beat yourself up over the wonton soup - the wrappers aren't that big and the meat in the center is protein.

Feel better soon!

BTW, try to stay low carb when sick because the yeast in bread products feeds the nasty little germs. So do sugars.

Thanks again ladies. I'm sure you'll get back on track Fresh! I broke down and had ice cream yesterday and this morning the scale showed a 1.5 lb loss for the first time in 2 weeks! Nice little perk of feeling so awful. I really appreciate everyone's support. I'm going to take it easy for a couple more days and then back to work on Monday.

Mashed califlower works too if your not up to eating a lot also brocolli soup homemade is yummy

I've been fairly healthy since starting Atkins. I haven't had experience with eating when I was ill.

I hope you are feeling better now.
