I just started Atkins yesterday and so far I hate it. I feel just awful! But, I will not give up. I am determined to give it a week at least. I have 2 questions-

1) How do I determine what salad dressing is okay. I am unclear on this. I know I am looking for one with no sugar and I couldn't find one. Is corn syrup okay? Help!

2) Also, what do I do to officially join the WISH board? I have been lurking since yesterday and I love it! I need this support. My goal is 50 lbs.

What is a realistic weight loss on Atkins by Christmas? I am about 50 lbs overweight.

Hi!
1) It's almost impossible to find salad dressing without the tiniest bit of sugar in it. What you aim for is the smallest amount possible in a dressing you can stand to eat. LOL Most people use Kraft Ranch which I believe (if I can remember- that's what I used to use) is about 2gm sugar per 2 tbsp? I now use Kraft Caesar vinagrette w/parmesan that is less calories (and I have to watch that now that I weigh less- I gain if I go too high in calories even lowcarbing) but also <1 gm sugar per 2 tbsp. It also is thinner so it isn't "gloppy" and I can use less- yet have it cover every bite instead of eating some dry salad or using too much salad dressing to get some on each bite.
Just aim as low as you can- it's really impossible to NEVER get even the tiniest bit of sugar- especially in salad dressing. When it's that minimal, if you aren't eating too much of the salad dressing too, it doesn't cause any problems. Atleast I haven't heard of anyone having problems eating salad dressing- and most everyone does... because 2 cups salad and .5 cup other veggie is recommended on induction. There are some totally suga free dressings out there but I haven't found them nor had the time to search for a decade for them... LOL

2) I don't think there's an "official" way to join WISH- if you're posting here..your official. :)

3) Realistic weightloss all depends on the person- how they've dieted in the past, how much they need to lose (and many other factors about their body, metabolism, etc.) The AVERAGE, which is not meaning it is the same for everyone, is usually up to 10% of the weight you need to lose- lost in the first 2wks of induction or so. After that the AVERAGE weightloss is 1-2lbs per week and that rate is actually recommended by Dr Atkins because if you lose TOO much each week- you're losing so fast you may have trouble keeping it off once you reach goal weight. I average (on fitday for the entire time I've been on Atkins) 2.53lbs a week right now- but that's including induction when I lost a lot really quickly (probably because I never drank water before -for like 10yrs- and was probably was retaining fluids and lost a lot of water weight in the beginning). If I were to take out the first month or so- my average would be more like 1.2lbs a week or something- and that's averaging in better weightloss weeks with those I lost none or gained/etc- and yet it seems like I lost 70lbs rather fast when you look at my sig eh?

So just remember- even when you think you are losing slow... it really adds up quick and time flies.. before you know it, you've lost a substantial amount of weight! I didn't think of it in terms of 6mo from now I want to be goal weight- I just took it one day at a time and then I got there! I think I would have been overwhelmed to think I have to lose 70lbs in 6mo- too much pressure. Yanno?

Wishing you lots of luck! Please consider giving it a FULL 2 weeks. You can do anything for just 2wks, right? Because after that- it gets soooo much easier. :)

There's a thread near the top of this page that explains how to add the WISH clipart to your signature. And there's another thread that you can add your name to and Kath will add you to the "roster".

As for salad dressings, I LOVE bleu chesse & ceasar dressings - those are usually fine.

As for your goal, just start on Atkins and see how it goes. If you get stuck for a few weeks, there are things you can do (like going back on induction) to jump start again. Remeber, it probably took years to put the weight on - don't expect it to come off too quickly!

Paul Newman has an Oil & Vinegar Dressing that is WONDERFUL and it doesn't have any sugar! I carry it with me whenever I go out to restaurants. Some dressings have sugar listed up with the carb count and calories...that's okay. Watch out for ones that have sugar, fructose, or corn syrup listed in the ingredients. Those are the ones that will get ya!

I've only lost 10 pounds in about 3 weeks, but I'm going to drop some things off of my diet to see if that helps. I also started walking today, so I know that will help move the weight loss along. I'm looking at reaching 190 pounds right now. When I reach that point I'll decide if that's where I'm happy. 190 pounds would be about 45 pounds lost! I'll do the 50 mark since that's a big one as far as weight loss goes.

Just hang in there, I hated Atkins the first week I was on it too, but now with the weight loss I have, I'm sticking with it. His Atkins bars help me over my chocolate cravings and the peanuts help me get over the crunchy fix. I have to back off the peanuts though, because I believe they are stalling my weight loss. I'm going to back off the diet soda also. Even though it's Diet Rite, all the junk they have in it to make it, could be messing me up too.

Best to you and just hang in there, you'll do fine!

Denise

I just wanted to wish you well.

You can do it.

God bless, best wishes, and encouragement, RaySharpton:)

Ditto on the Paul Newman's vinegar and oil, that's one of my favs too. The nice thing about it is it does NOT have to be refrigerated, so like Tiggerlover91, you could carry a smaller bottle with you if you need to.

I've also recently gotten into the habit of making my own dressings using some type of oil, some type of vinegar (or lemon juice), and a pinch of salt. I just wisk it together and use only very small amounts, and toss my salad greens in there. I find if I do it that way, I use a LOT less than I would a bottled dressing.

I'm a blue cheese fan too...be careful though. I've been noticing that the low fat ones tend to have MORE carbs than the regular ones.

Welcome to atkins...hubby and I are both on it. We are both down almost 30 pounds in about 2 months (and that is with a couple of days off the plan and recovering). Remember the weight loss is different for everyone. I was real tired the first week or so...then it gets better and now I have a ton of energy and have started exercising. Hubby wasn't as tired..but, he doesn't have as much weight to lose as I do. I still have 50 lbs to go.

I never plan on losing more than two pounds a week...that way there is no disappointment. Some weeks it is more, some weeks there is no weight loss. There is no way to tell how many pounds you will have off by Christmas, but, you do have a good three months!

As far as salad dressing..making your own is great. I use hidden valley ranch..less than 1 gram per two tablespoons. Hubby uses newmans own dressing..oil and vinegar I think.

Good luck!

Ditto on the Paul Newman's vinegar and oil

Ok, not to be stupid, but is this different from his Olive oil and vinegar because I have that one and it's very yum, but it has a gram of sugar...is there another oil and vinegar?

I like his parmesan vinegarette too, but it also has one gram of sugar.

I bought my fiance some Maries blue cheese dressing in super cheese and chunky and neither has any carbs or sugar grams.

Karen :smooth:

My favorite Salad Dressing is Marie's Super blue Cheese. 0 Carbs. It is a really strong blue cheese dressing so you really have to love Blue Cheese.
also, Marie's Ceaser is only 1 or 2 carbs, but very tasty. Peggie

Thank you all SOOO much for your encouragement! I am just finishing day 3 and feeling a little better. I'm still pretty light headed and dizzy but it's getting better! I would love to know where to get the Atkins bars! I have such a craving for sweets! Are his products only available through his website? Obviously, I am very new to this. I do feel much less hungry than on other diets so I am hoping this one will work. I will weigh tomorrow morning to see how it's going :-). THANK YOU!!!!!!:D
