my hubby works with a group of women all on this diet. and now his curiousity has been peaked! but i'm not sure if i can do it with him...

can anyone give me the reader's digest version of this diet? i'm not much for veggies...i'm a big potato lover and i think that would be the hardest part for me...

The best thing you can do is buy the book, and read the first 3 chapters. It explains how the diet works, and gets you started with the first 2 week Induction period.

During the first 2 weeks of Induction, you basically just eat meat, eggs, cheese, and one salad a day.

After those first 2 weeks, you slowly start adding carbs, in the form of healthy foods (veggies, nuts, whole grains, etc.). Once you reach the point where you've stopped losing weight, you back off - then you know how many carbs per day you can have and still lose weight!

That's an extremely shortened version. Like I said - you should really read the book. It gives hints, explanations, recipes, ideas, etc, etc.

thanks for the info!! DH has a book on CD holding for him at the library...he wants to do this, i'm just not sure if i can! i have a BIG sweet tooth...and no matter what i do, i just can't seem to lose it! i try the not buying sweets for home and such, but they are readily available to me at work...

i managed to lose about 30 pounds 2 years ago using a generic version of metabolife and exercising. i eventually stopped taking the pills but continued exercising and continued to lose weight, just not as fast. i went from a size 14 down to between a 10 to a 12!! but my life change drastically and i stopped exercising and i just can't get myself moving again...

Tell DH to buy the book. It is under $10 in paperback version ---- and he will likely want to refer to it often. I have links to great low carb informational websites on my webpage [linked below]. You will find the rules of induction as well as alot more terrific info there!
:D

The first few days on the plan will be the hardest, but if you can make it through those days (which you can) you will see an amazing thing happen. You're craving for carbs- inc;uding bread, potatoes and sweets will all but disappear! You will more then likely have lost a great amount of your appetite and you will fell yourself gaining strength. the first part is hard, but if I could do it- anyone can!! You just have to be in the right place in your life to get there. I just tell myself it's only food- I can have what I would like to have later. It's only temporary- I figure I have at least another 20 years of eating what ever I want- in moderation of course! ;)

scarlette,

It's great that you want to diet w/your DH. You will have each other for motivation & it sounds like you are ready to get healthy.

There is plenty of information onwww.atkinscenter.com
& that is what I have been using until I can get the book. I understand that the $10 book can be found at Target.

I am the first to admit that I was a carb-addict. I NEVER thought that I would be able to pass up on bread or potatoes & definitely not miss out on sweets. I am tired of the way I look & hate tfeeling like I'm always tired & decided to start Atkins. It will be 2 weeks for me on Sunday. I have lost about 3 lbs. so far & have not cheated at all. I don't have any interest in those other foods (carbs) so far. I know that I have a long way to go but I feel better, my mood is better & I am having a great time trying out all the recipes here & on other websites.

I would say to do the research & give it a try. You have nothing to lose (except maybe some weight). ;)

Good luck with your decision & let us know what your plans are.

Everyone has given you great suggestions. I just wanted to add my support.

Best Wishes and Encouragement, RaySharpton:)

I think you'll find it surprising once you break the carb cycle that you really don't crave them, and in fact you may find (like many of us have) that if you do overindulge just how sick and sleepy they make you feel. Find a diet (eating plan) that is one you can live with indefinately. I find the Carb Addicts plan works best for me, it means I do less "extra" cooking for my DH and kids, but each plan has its advantages and draw backs.

www.chasefreedom.com has many diets listed and gives a short version of what the plan is like, and a pro and con review. Some are very slanted, some have a very "old school" feel to them, but it gives a good overview.

When I first heard about it, I thought the same thing. I could never do that. Then I thought I'd just try. Before I even started induction, I was so excited and knew that I could do it!

I just finished day 9 of induction and I can tell you that I feel great!!! I don't feel hungry all the time like I used to. I have had some major temptations (pizza, cake, ice cream), but I've amazed myself at every turn because I didn't give in.

But I never could have done this if I felt like somebody was making me do it and I wasn't really sure it was for me. It's not easy and you have to be inspired within yourself.

That said, I'd say give it a try. If you don't like it, nothing lost.
