I'm 3 weeks into the Adkins diet and have done great so far. I've lost 21 lbs. so far. Here's my question, what are your suggestions for a low-carb meal rest. in WDW? I read another post saying O'hanas has plenty of meat selections. I guess LTT would be another place. Any help would be great. Has anyone else had to keep on a adkins diet while in WDW? Or did you just wing it for the time you were there?

If you you are referring to the ATKINS diet, then you will have no problem at WDW. There's lots of protein for you to eat. I suggest 'Ohana at the Poly--skewers of meat. turkey and shrimp galore. Have a little salad and stay away from the bread. The great thing about Atkins is that you can eat just about anywhere (well, maybe not an Italian restaurant). Congrats on your weight loss!

I don't follow Atkins, but I ate acceptable lo-carb meals (usually a chicken Caesar salad or similar, no croutons or bread, of course) at the Tusker House, Sunshine Food Fair (The Land), and Liberty Inn. I also had a less than stellar taco salad (minus shell) at El Pirata y el Perico.

I do eat carbs at one meal per day, so I never tried a lo-carb meal in a sit down restaurant. Also, I don't eat any kind of artificial sweetener, so I wouldn't be able to comment on all the sugar free desserts mentioned in the article.

Congratulations on your weight loss and on your resolve to stay on plan even on vacation!

Thank you for the responses!! The Deb Wills site is awesome. I'll print that off and take it with me for my vacation. This will probably force us to eat at places I wouldn't normally go to. I think I'm going to have fun with this when we go. My kids are really supportive of my diet. I would like to get down another 40lbs. by August. I can't imagine how it will feel to finally buy some nice disney shirts and have them fit nice!! Thanks to all for your support and advice. Brent;)

You can always eat a turkey leg! They are available at every park. Have a great trip.

Hi. I just started Atkins yesterday and was wondering the very same thing since we will be going to WDW for a week next October.

I know that O'Hana seems like a very good choice because it is heavy on meat. We have also eaten at the Garden Grill at Epcot in the past and it would be a good option as well. They serve flank steak and chicken, salad with ranch dressing and a zuchinni medley.

The wdwig site also has all the menus for every restuarant at WDW. You can read through them and find some lo carb options at just about every restaurant. I have heard that the restaurants are also pretty good about special requests. I knwo that the Garden Grill also serves fish but its breaded. They may be able to make up a batch for you without the breading.

Just about any breakfast buffet will be no problem at all. Everywhere has scrambled eggs, omelets, sausage, bacon, etc. In fact I am thinking of making several PSs for character breakfasts and making that our biggest meal of the day. That way if there are more limited choices at other restuarants I won't be starving and tempted to eat a bunch of carbs.

With that said I do know there are all kinds of tempting carb items all over the place at WDW. I'm thinking of getting the supplement that Dr. Atkins recommends for decreasing carb cravings just to be safe!!

Congrats on your weight loss!!

IMO, just like at home you can go pretty much anywhere you want, as long as you order carefully. Basically, order mushrooms or LC vegetables instead of a potato with your steak, avoid the bread basket, and other simple stuff. WDW sit-down restaurants are very hassle-free when it comes to making substitutions. For dessert, you might try some fresh berries (assuming you're past Induction) with whipped cream - even if it's not on the menu, most places will have something like that. To be extra-safe, if you call a day or two ahead, they can definitely wrangle some for you.

Side note re sweeteners: have you tried Splenda (sucralose)? No icky aftertaste, minimal effect on blood sugar - it's awesome! :)

I agree with MHopkins.. why eat differently than when you eat out at home? It's all the same principle - don't let the fact that it's Disney cloud your judgement.

Many places also have sugar free desserts, IF you ask...

The only place I found Splenda at 'the World' was at le Chef's de France in France, World Showcase at EPCOT, all the others had Equal (or equivelent) and sweet n low) :)

*nod* That's why I always carry some in my purse! :) (Yes, I'm an addict. But at least this addiction is good for me!)

PS - I LOVE your screen name, MadMadamMim - that's one of my very favorite Disney movies! "Did I say no pink dragons? DID I?" LOL!!

I DO NOT BELIEVE Y'ALL!!!

I've been on atkins for almost 2 months now and I love it. I'm losing and I'm feeling much better....but to do it while at DW!!!!!

NO WAY!

I must say I admire your fortitude and will power. Me, I;ll be in a carb-induced coma by the end of the week we are there and loving it.

Do I get kicked out of the Low Carb club now that I've confessed?

Beansmom,

*looking furtively over my shoulder* Shhh! Don't tell anyone, but while I am more than happy to give advice when asked, I have NO intention of following the plan when I go on vacation. Let's just keep this between us chickens, though, okay? :smooth:

Dropped another pound!! I also have to do this for myself guys. I topped out 5 years ago around 320 or so. My scale only went up that far. I got down to 285 and quit. I stepped on the scale 3 weeks ago and was 302 and freaked out. So from that moment on I have been dieting and today I was 280! I have a vacation in may to the Bahama's and would like to be 260. And 240 by Aug. in WDW. My goal weight is 225 for now. I think it will be fairly easy to keep on it at WDW. I will miss the beavertails and cheesesoup and breadsticks and such. But hopefully losing weight will make my trip more enjoyable. I wonder if they have Michelob Ultra at the parks? That's what I drink for beer now and it's working out great. Sorry if I'm boring you all with this. Good luck to all on the atkin's diet!!

:D

Badger - DH is/was on low carb at our trip at WDW in Dec. He did fine - you just have to talk to your server. I looked at the menus on wdwig prior and we picked the ones that were mostly protein.
Ate at LeCellier (DH loved it), LTT (asked for oil and vinegar for salad instead of their dressing) but unfortunately didn't do very well at 50's Prime Time - DH was all set on meatloaf and it has bread filler in it (he asked) Buffets were fine.
One thing about Disney is they are more than accomodating with substitutions (ie more salad, veggies instead of starch)
His fast food trick (counter service) is get a double burger (or two) or hotdog and load up on the toppings - and just don't eat the bread. You have to ask for a plate, fork and knife, but it worked well.
As far as snacks be sure to bring your own. DH likes pork rinds so we brought several bags with us and I put little portions in ziploc's and took to the parks with us.
Congrat's on your success! (DH is down 55lbs since Nov.)

Thanks yzma & Kronk! I think with 50's (our favorite) I will eat a steak and green beans and salad no mashed potatoes. I'm really encouraged by the options I didn't know were out there!! Is your husband still on the diet? Y & K, How much more does he want to lose?

Hi, it is quite easy to low carb at WDW. I lost 4 lbs one week while I was there. get yourself one of the quide books that tell about the restaurants and snack places etc.. and a little about what they serve. have ideas on where to eat when you plan your days in the parks. if you are a chocoholic like me, you can find sugar free in some of the candy shops. just be carefull with that stuff if you know what I mean! some of it has carbs, but it never affected my loss one bit. drink lots of water. I always look for places with a toppings bar for my burger. I remove the bun and pile on the lettuce and make it into something like a burger salad. If you go to universal, monster cafe has the best roasted chicken and caesar salads. I also take splenda packets with me. I get bad cravings for something sweet in the afternoons. I always get myself a cup of coffee sweetened with splenda and creamer it does the trick every time. I used to weigh 172 (I'm a female) and now I weigh 135 and wear a size 9. I want to get down to 125 lbs. I found that I cannot do a strick Atkins version of the diet. I allow myself 3 slices of lite bread a day (am on a doctor supervised low carb plan now) and I am losing just fine. I don't get into ketosis anyways, good luck on your diet. you will find lots of low carb choices in WDW. remember stay focused! nothing tastes as good as feeling thin feels! (p.s carry along a baggie of macadamia nuts and maybe a carbolite bar along in your backpack for a quick low carb fix.) have fun! Linda

Hey there! Just wanted to link you to a board here where you will find quite a few DIS folks on Atkins. It's the WISH board, found as a subdirectory of the community board. (WISH stands for We're Inspired to STaying Healthy) or getting healthy in most people's case! :) And since everyone here is a Disney fan, I'm sure they'll have more great tips for you as well!

I am an atkins die hard, you can always choose buffets that have salad bars, most have several meat and fish choices and veggies. May get lucky and find diet jello for dessert!!

Brent - DH is actually on his own version of "Atkins" He wants to lose about 20-30 more lbs, but for him it's not a "diet" but a lifestyle change! He basically reads labels, watches his carb intake and eats low carb food - mostly meats and salads, and makes sure he isn't missing anything like fibre.
He has stopped eating breads, potatos, rice, etc. but most inportantly he has stopped eating french fries and potato chips (his favorites!)
Luckily, he was never into deserts or sweets so I guess it's much easier for him. He doesn't plan to go back to eating "junk" again.
He has had luck replacing chips with pork rinds (he loves them - yuk! :)) and our trick at WDW was that we took a few bags with us. I used ziploc's to divide them up into small portions to take with us to the park. (Nuts, etc would work too, but our DS is allergic to nuts!)
We also have one of those plug in coolers that we take in the car, then use it as a fridge in our hotel rooms. We stock it with suger free jello, cheese and snack meats for late night cravings.
He also uses the "burger salad" trick when we do counter service or fast food. It hasn't been easy for him but now that he's 4 months into it it almost seems like he's been eating this way for ever!
No worries staying with it at WDW! Have Fun!

Badger-

Would the Japanese restaurant (Teppana--sp!>) be good-I think it is meats and fish cooked at the table and it would be fun.
