At what Temp. does your childs school stay inside for recess?

Straight out of today's daily email announcement:

Students are reminded to dress for the cold weather. As a general rule, students will remain indoors if the temperature is below zero Fahrenheit or the wind-chill factor is 10 degrees below zero or less.

Yeah, we wouldn't be outside much if we went with the 32 thing either! Although this morning it was -13 with the wind chill, so they didn't have to wait outside before the bell at least, but I'm sure it's warm enough now at recess time! Yep, just checked and the wind chill is a balmy -3 so I guess they can go out and play!

I don't believe we had, at least, in the high school, a weather regulation. If it was cold, and we were stupid enough to be outside, in the wind and shivering temperatures, we were outside. There's hardly any inside space for the students to be, even if it's raining, let alone when it's cold. When it rained? We stood, cuddled together, about thirty of us, under the stairwell. When it was cold, we cuddled, under a blanket, the same thirty of us, under the same stairwell.

I'm just floored that all these schools have recess!

My district does not. I live right down the street from the elementary school and in the winter there are never kids outside. In the nice weather they do gym outside but no recess. All 3 of my kids said they didn't do recess. A teacher might choose to take them out for a little bit but that hardly ever happened. My middle DD's 5th grade teacher used to take them out in the spring when we would start to ge nice days and they would all sit around under tree and do their lessons outside..but all 3 said the only time they played outside at school was for gym classes.

My kids actually said having to go out in the cold weather would not be fun..none of us like cold weather in my house.

EXACTLY (except your family actually has clothing on!) Usually the "larger" men with no shirts, just paint, are the ones to get primetime TV spots! LOL. I love a good football game!

I was trying to find mine and couldn't.

My basic answer is it has to be bitterly cold, cold, cold. I want to say 0 though but it more or less has to do with the wind chill here.

Similar to having a snow day -- it has to be a blizzard & 1/2 before they will call off school here.

NOW...on the flip side, if it's warm & raining, they will stay inside. If it's snowing they go outside. HMMM...I have no idea -- all I know is there is snow on the ground = snowpants, boots, heavy coat, hat & gloves are sent to school.

That is the one nice thing about Middle School here -- My kids don't need quite so much snow gear just to go to school since they don't have recess. No boots needed or snowpants (they wouldn't have room in their lockers for such things anyway!).

I'm in the Twin Cities in MN. Our school rule for elementary is you are outside UNLESS the air temp is 0 degrees OR the windchill is -10 degrees.

I don't live in the Twin Cities but I live in a small town in central MN and we have the exact same rules.

I was thinking the same thing! Our school's recess is right after lunch, and they only have about 20 minutes for recess. I can't imagine the teacher dealing with second graders' snowpants and boots!

Our kids put their snowpants/boots on BEFORE going to lunch...so basically they eat lunch with their snowpants/boots on. That's what my kids tell me anyway.

I know they have levels and let me tell you the ONE time I didn't send DD's snowpants in when she was in 1st grade because it was near the end of winter, it was *just* a dusting of snow, you dragged your foot over it and it would disappear....she was SO ticked off at me after school because she had to stay on the blacktop & couldn't go on the equipment. Learned my lesson -- you see so much as a flake of snow, send the snowpants.

The way it goes here = no boots OR snowpants = have to stay on the blacktop.

Snowpants but no boots = you can go on the equipment but NOT out in the field.

Snowpants/boots = you have free reign to run around whereever -- go make a snowman or a snowfort if you want (NO throwing snowballs or going up on the mounds of snow allowed though).

I will say by 5th grade, my DD was more than happy to stay in during the cold. She happened to sprain her ankle in gymnastics so was stuck inside for nearly a month (no recess, no gym, etc...) and she was a HAPPY CAMPER.

My older son tended to not finish all his work so he would have to stay in during recess to finish (Hmmmm...that was supposed to be an incentive to get the work DONE that you would not have to miss recess) when it got colder.

Of course, now my DD is a High Schooler and I'm lucky if I can convince her that YES, she really DOES need that winter coat to stand out there and wait for the bus vs. nothing or a flimsy jean jacket when it's 10 degrees outside.

LOL, my kids think it is hot at 32 degrees. When we lived in Alaska, the kids went outside until it hit -10. Children were required to wear snow pants, boot, gloves and hats. There were no complaints.

I verified it in their school handbook.
It says " In the event of rain or temps below 40, recess is held in the student's classroom."

Also, my kids told me if it is muddy or snow on the ground, they stay inside.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say I didn't believe you. It's just shocking because you know what they say about Michigan having a six month long winter. That just seems so sad for the kids that they basically never get to go outside and get some fresh air and exercise. I think you also mentioned the girls have to wear skirts? That seems crazy in MI! What strange rules your school has

It is snowing here and an email went home to parents this morning reminding them of our snow policy. We have outdoor recess as long as it is above 20 degrees. Boots and snowpants are required at recess unless the child wants to stay on the blacktop.

Here in my part of Texas, that's the unofficial rule as well. Anytime the teachers get a chill while looking out the window, the kids stay inside. Most of the time, the kids don't wear coats, as they don't even OWN coats. We have lightweight jackets and that's it. A lot of the kids forget them since it's not a hardship to make it from the bus or the car line into the school without a jacket in coolish weather.

If ithits the 30s or 40s, we hole up and eat soup and chili for a few days until it passes. We don't go out. Okay....We might go to the mall or a movie, but that's it. Never recess.

I love that. I am still in NY my DB moved south many years ago. School is closed if it snows and inch or more and there is a run on bread and milk at the stores. Unless we have 8" or more they will not even consider closing schools. They may delay and hour or two but not close. Funny the differences between parts of the country!

In my area, there is occasional snowfall, but only once or twice a year over 4", so most kids don't own snowpants. Up in the northern part of the country, it sounds like all kids have them.

I can not imagine living up there!

Every winter I get online and start looking for a house down around Florida!!

Are you saying that your child's class went out for 30 minutes three times?! I would get yelled at by the principal if I spent 1 hr 30 minutes outside in one day!

To answer your question, I am in NC, and I don't think we have a guideline for cold weather. For my classroom, it is when I am my TA are too cold outside, LOL. I imagine that is at about 30 degrees.

No, they don't have 3 30 minute recess periods. They have 3 recess periods in 2nd grade. I think 2 are for 15-20 min, and one is 30 min.

It sounds like a lot of you who are teachers supervise your kids when out for recess???

Here I don't think the teachers don't go out at all for recess. There are a couple of playground supervisors instead.

At my daughters school, they tell us, send your child with a warm coat, hat and mittens, they have recess every day outside after lunch..UNLESS it's like an ice storm or something/ raining.

I like it. They will be fine. I am sure they are being responsable about it.

Same here. It's in every single school newsletter from November until the snow melts in March (or April some years).
