At what point is 2 UY worth it?

For myself, even if I had some travels at the end of my UY, it wouldn’t trigger me to juggle another membership.

Only time it could happen is if I bought a restricted resale resort contract. Wouldn’t matter with that different membership UY only able to be used at the single location. Those and my other points wouldn’t be in play for a transfer. (However it would never happen if I already had any direct points to that resort).

I’m a one UY, single membership vacationer.

2 use years if it means getting a contract you couldn't otherwise get. This is how I ended up with 2 UY's. My AUL sub and VGC contracts were the reason I got a 2nd UY.

2 UY is confusing, but not as confusing as multiple contracts within the same UY imo.
2 UY can be a hassle if you need points from both of them since transfers are now limited to 1 time per year and not reversible.
Does anyone know if it goes by 1 transfer per calendar year or is it 1 transfer within one of the use years?

It made sense for us in the sense that we don't really like to combine points with our different contracts; not to mention we're always booking at the 11 month window anyway, so we basically so far have stuck with staying at our home resorts with said home resorts points (which we will always have to for our resale Riviera, anyway).

Also, we sort of wanted a different UY because we weren't exactly sure if we'd hold onto our Beach Club contract until the end, so I wanted another UY I could potentially transfer those Beach Club points into in order to sell the contract stripped.

Perhaps the biggest factor though, is that the contract we found (and had been looking for a good deal specifically at Polynesian for about a year) was sort of just too good to pass up so we jumped on it.

Love multiple UYs. I’d feel too restricted if a relative wanted to go to Disney with my family in a certain month and I had to say “sorry that’s beyond my banking window.”

I know two UYs would be a big hassle... but losing points, if we ever needed to cancel would be a pain and sadness....

We have 2 use years and I don't feel it's a hassle at all. But I do manage them independently of each other - each with its own banking/borrowing but no transfers between them.

Besides the extra flexibility with cancelations you do get some other extras perks that apply "per membership" like double the waitlists, buying OTU points in each use year if needed etc.

It doesn't really matter if the reservation is after your banking window. It only matters if you were to cancel said reservation after your banking window.

Realistically, it only impacts a few months out of the year. The only way I could foresee myself cancelling after my banking window would be in case of illness, in which case I'll be in a holding situation regardless.

That’s part of what makes DVC so great. Everyone values aspects of the membership differently. I’d prefer to juggle multiple use years and always make reservations early within them, especially with banked or borrowed points, in case something comes up. If I’m traveling with another family I may need to shrink the room size or drop a room if plans change for them.

Reading this thread, I start to toy with the idea of multiple UYs, and I can think of some benefits that come with multiple UYs. I even went over to dvcforless.com and started to set some searches for other UYs I think I could rationalize myself into (dangerous thing to do - don't recommend - haha).

But your thought brings me right back to thinking, nope, not worth it. I think the convenience of being able to combine points at the 7-month mark outweigh any potential benefits of multiple UYs for exactly this reason, at least for me. For others, the cost/benefit analysis may work out differently. For me, with my October UY, I think we will likely use our points in June or July from time to time and wouldn't even rule out an August trip - but, those would be our summer break trips. School is out and the culture where we live/work is such that people plan their week long summer trips months in advance, and people don't cancel those unless there is extreme illness or other major life event. People start signing up for summer camps in January and often decide on their summer vacation weeks by then so they can pick the weeks where they don't have to pay for summer camp.

Another thought - if you have to cancel within the 30-day window, and you don't think you'll be able to reschedule your trip to actually use those points, seems to me the better thing to do is see if you can rent it out last minute as a confirmed reservation. You may well have to discount it to get it to move (or maybe not), but probably a better thing to do if you can make it happen rather than having those points go into holding.

I agree. There are definitely situations where it makes sense to have more than one use year. It’s a very personal thing. For me, the benefit of being able to easily combine all my points far outweighs any downsides, but I can certainly understand why some individuals would find it useful for their circumstances.

I don’t own at Riviera so if I ever add a resale contract for there, I feel like having the use year is much less important.

I've considered a second use year for the same reason. If you do get one, make a spreadsheet and keep track of where those points are so you don't end up in a pickle at some point.
