At what point did you make the jump from a 1 BDR to 2 BDR?

We have four and we have to have a 2 bedroom. We are making our 1st trip home and I can't wait for everyone to have their own bed.

Well, we haven't even stayed in a 1 bdrm yet, so I can't help you there! But a big part of the reason we bought at AKV was the 5 in a 1 bdrm availability...I think we'll be doing that until the 2 younger ones don't want to share the pullout.
I was wondering, though, have you ever tried melatonin for DD? My oldest son is autistic, and autistics are notorious for having sleep issues. Years ago his developmental pediatrician recommended liquid melatonin, and it has worked so well for him. My friends kids have tried it, too, and it has been successful. Maybe you could ask your pediatrician if a 2 1/2 yo can try it?
I feel so bad for you all, it is so hard to be sleep deprived!!

We started out with a 2 bedroom for 4 of us (DD and DS were grown), and now that they travel less fequently with us, we go with the 1 bedroom for the 2 of us.

We still stay in 1BR units, and my kids are teens now. We only do a 2BR if we are traveling with another family, and that happens very rarely. DS and DD have always traded off on the air bed and the sofa bed, since they haven't shared a bed since they were toddlers. A 2BR would be nice, but we would much rather have a longer vacation in a 1BR than a shorter one in a 2BR.

At what point do most families start opting for a 2 BDR over a 1 BDR? We have a 2.5 year-old who is a HORRIBLE sleeper (and I do mean horrible...up 5 times a night, makes a ton of noise, etc.). Trust me, we've tried everything. She's just going to have to outgrow it I guess.

DS11 was a terrible sleeper too - and we did everything. (He was a horrible eater too) Well, lo and behold at age 4 he got diagnosed with sleep apnea due to his adenoids and tonsils - got them removed and within a week he was sleeping through the night and boy oh boy did he start EATING!

It was such a relief to know I had not been doing something wrong all those years that he would not sleep or eat!

I have 3 small ones and they all fit comfortably in the bed together. We usually have to take one of them in with us during the night, whether we are home or away, because they all walk and talk in their sleep! I think we are at the end of our 1 BR days real soon.... :( where does the time go?!

I just would like to add my two cents about the sleeping fits your child has. I dont know about the medicine, but that might be something to look into. My oldest son, who is now 12 had night terrors when he was little. He would scream or moan, just like you describe, but he would still be asleep. We were told not to wake or touch him when this happens since his was considered asleep. It was scary at first, but we just go used to it and he slept with his brother who never woke to his noise. He no longer has the night terrors, as they call it and does not sleep walk now, thank goodness. By the way with 3 kids we have always stayed in a two bedroom and enjoy it fully.

We just returned from SSR and VWL. My boys are 6 and 4. We had a 1 BR at both resorts. We brought an air mattress and put in on the floor next to the bed for the boys to sleep on. They still like being near mom and dad on vacation so it worked great for now!

We've been in 2BR's since 2004 when our 3rd DD was 3.5. The 1BR worked great for the first couple of DVC trips. The girls were old enough to be alone on the pull out and the baby was great in with us. But as they got older, they had a hard time sharing a pull out (one of them kicks). And of course the 3rd DD stopped sleeping in a pack n' play. So we had to buy more points! That was the excuse anyway. But it allows us to have longer vactions because we have space, my DH can stay up late in the main area and watch sports and whichever teen is not sleepy can join him. You have to have 2 bathrooms with two teens. But you are a long way from that.

My older daughter had sleep apnea and it was the scariest thing to listen to her at night. When those adenoids and later the tonsils came out - she was a changed child. All of my kids are on singulaire and it has cured the asthma for two and reduced the incidence significantly for the 3rd. I consider it a miracle drug, although I do know some kids don't tolerate it well.

My middle child, now 17, had lots of growing aches and pains at night in her limbs. I didn't hesitate to give her tylenol every once in a while and sometimes that was enough to jump start her normal sleep pattern and all would be fine for awhile. But there's so much pressure these days not to medicate any child unnecessarily. My sister just had a baby and it is soooooo different than even 10 years ago. Probably a good thing.

I told DH that I figure that our Thanksgiving vacation this year will probably be our last time in a 1 BDR, because once the baby is sleeping in a crib we can't have DD and the baby in the same room. DD will wake the baby up:sad2:

How does it even work out practically with a 2 bedroom and such young kids? Does one parent go and sleep in the "studio" portion with one child while the other parent/child occupy the living room/master bedroom? I didn't think that we'd even consider a 2 BDR with such young kids, but given the circumstances I'm thinking that we may not have a choice:sad2:

Hmm. In your situation, I think OKW might be best. Like other posters, we routinely put the pack and play in the laundry room - it has far bigger laundry rooms than the other DVCs and let DS as a baby sleep there.

If you opt for a 2 bedroom, I also like the way OKW is set up vs. the other DVCs for having small kids in the second bedroom. The bedroom is right off the living room and feels much closer to me than the other DVCs, which have more of a U shape, with the second bedroom a really long way from the first.
You can also get dedicated 2 bedrooms, which are nice because they don't have a second way out.

Good luck.
