At the transfer desk now

Honestly, I knew to tip porters etc but we did not tip our driver when we took the DCL transportation from MCO :guilty: We never handed him any luggage (no carryon as it was left in Hyatt hotel room). Next trip I will tip, I honestly did not know about tipping the driver. Guess I learned something today

Edited to say: Plus we just followed everyone off the bus as we had never been on a cruise so we went with the flow.

The bus drivers put our bags under the bus and take them back out so we do tend to tip them. We don't use the porters in the terminal (or anywhere it isn't rude to deal with the luggage ourselves) but anytime someone does touch our bags they get tipped.

I feel cheap now. i only gave the porters $2 a bag. Would have given more if i had read this before my trip. LOL

to clarify my $4/$5 a bag, we do that for sky caps at the airport (saves us time in line and they are cool about the weight)... porters we do $1/$2 a bag, I think we usually give them $10 total for about 4-5 bags

We tip $5 for the bus driver but the poor driver also has to haul out the luggage from the bus below and our stuff is heavy... if you don't have luggage being towed underneath then I can see maybe not tipping the bus driver

We have always tip anyone who handles our luggage. When we arrive at WDW resorts and we have Magical Express pick up our luggage, we leave an envelope with tip and note in our room for bell services when they bring the luggage. They've always taken it. When bell services picks up our luggage for the cruise, we tip about $2/luggage. When we take the DCL transfer to the port, we don't tip the driver. When we arrive on the cruise and know that our stateroom host brings our luggage to our door and pick up our luggage the night before we disembark, we leave an extra tip of about $2-$4 per luggage in the gratuity envelope. The first DCL cruise, we didn't realize that it was the stateroom host that was handling our luggage until the night before we disembark, so my husband found him and handed him extra tip. He was surprised and appreciative. I'm not sure if everyone knows that they handle the luggage as well.

When we disembark from the ship, we pick up our own luggage...we don't use porters.

When we take Magical Express to the airport, we usually take our luggage. So, when the driver takes the luggage out at arrival, we tip him then (about $1/luggage). If we use the Resort Airline service at the resort, we bring our luggage to the counter and once they tag and take them, we give them a tip (about $1/luggage). In this case, we don't tip the driver when we take the ME to the airport.

I do understand why some don't tip. I don't think they know to do it. I don't think they're being cheap. My inlaws joined us for our Alaskan cruise and when luggage service at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver came to collect our luggage to bring to the ship, they didn't tip. We noticed this and tip for all of us. When we mentioned it to them (casually of course), they didn't think they had to tip. We just explained to them about tipping when anyone handles their luggage.

If a porter handles my luggage I tip them. Unloading the bags from the car we'll tip a dollar or two per bag, one if the bags are light, two if they're heavy. They don't usually give us an option to unload our bags our self.
We usually just walk our luggage off but if we do use a porter and they get us to the front of the line with a ton of our luggage we'll do $2-3 per bag. Its usually just me and my mom who travel together, and we usually pack light and just bring one piece of luggage each so dont use porter services much at the port or any airport if we fly anywhere.
We don't take busses to the port since we live in Orlando, but unless the bus driver gave us a tour while driving or something, I wouldn't tip. I'm not sure if Disney bus drivers handle the luggage or not- so I guess tip accordingly based off that would be my recommendation.

This is why we want to carry on all bags, lol. I don't want anyone handling my bags, especially not if I have to pay them.

I can't be the only frugal person on this board!!

You're not. Our bags are hardside with 4 wheels. They push easily. No need for porters or anyone to pick them up. I would rather take care of my own bags...............

Ours are the 21" American Tourister 4 wheel spinners. Roll smooth as butter!!! We will see how it works out.

Thanks for the advice everyone

I'm generally too cheap to pay use a porter. However, we just returned from our first cruise and used a porter. He was knew exactly where he was going and got us through customs and over to our Disney transfer quickly. It was great for a 1st timer! We'll do it on our own next time. We had 5 bags and I tipped him $20.

We tipped any bus driver that touched our bags $1/bag.

I consider the luggage [art of their normal tip....

I take the bus to work everyday. I don't tip my bus driver.

Of course you don't -- like most people you are following customary practices taught to you by your elders. In my community, local bus drivers belong to a union and are compensated, and do not work for tips, but for wages.

How much do people usually tip the hotel maid at a Disney resort? $5 a night? $10 a night? Only at the end of the stay, or day by day? Just curious.

I usually tip $1-2 dollars per person per day. I go day by day because you may have different housekeepers depending on their days off. I do a bit extra on last day because it's more work.

We have these.... the wheels are great. I like the hardside because it has a gasket on it to prevent water from getting in. They cost about $160 with the discounts I found online.

Most of the time they won't let you place your bags under in the first place. If I can't do it myself and they have to. Then that's the job they have. Just my thoughts. I'm cheap though.

As far as I am aware the porters all work for tips only. I am always thankful they are there to help me after a cruise as its so early I do not mind tipping as we travel with family and have seven to 8 bags.

What does bother me is that I feel the need/obligation to tip anyone who touches or handles my bags. This adds up to a lot at the end of a trip for a family. To be honest I not one to tip a set about per bag but last trip I tip 3 different times before getting on ship $10.00 to park and ride guy, $10.00 to outside airport ticket person. $10.00 Bus driver from airport to rental car place. and then $10.00 to the cruise porter to take our bags and throw in the bin. After cruise $20.00 to cruise porter to take our bags to rental car pick up after cruise and another $10 to rental car shuttle driver, and $10 to shuttle bus driver to own car. so we spend around $80.00 on tips for our bags per trip. Hubby used to get a bunch of ones now its 5 & 10 for tipping.

Wow! With all that tipping, would it have been cheaper to use the DCL transportation?

Me too.. I avoid it if at all possible, short of clutching my bag and hissing... but, if it happens then I tip too. ^^;;
