AT&T Uverse Experiences or Reviews??

....now...we have a BASIC CABLE thru Charter (no dvr), unlimited home phone AND 12 meg wi-fi internet...and my total bill is $77!! I'll take it any day..I think I have an AWESOME deal to have ALL 3 services for such a small price!

What you "have", my friend is a promotional deal that few others would be able to get-- don't fret, after a period of time, your rates too, will increase.

Quite frankly, I'll take U-verse's offerings over that oversized clunky cable box Charter still tries to push on their customers, any day of the week!

Caveat: I, too, live in a Charter area (namely, their home turf), but have been a happy U-verse customer since they first rolled-out service here in 2008.

As for U-verse internet......it sucks. I'm a computer/network systems engineer. U-verse proclaims to be a fiber network but that is not 100% true. Verizon FIOS is a pure fiber network. U-verse is fiber to the nearest DSLAM, then it's POTS lines to your house. We subscribed to U-verse "MAX PLUS" option and never saw anything close to 18 Mbps and "MAX TURBO" wasnt even avilable.

That may depend on what region a person lives in. While U-verse is certainly not "Fiber to the Premesis" like that of Verizon FiOS in their respective service areas, it is:

  • U-verse is fiber to the nearest DSLAM, then it's POTS lines to your house (in legacy AT&T/SBC areas)
  • U-verse is "fiber to the curb" in most former BellSouth areas.

As for customer satisfaction -- nearly 2,500 posts have been made here with the majority of them coming from a U-verse home -- you be the judge...

Of course the clincher for us is that it's not available in our area yet, they think 3-6 mths.

Good luck with this. AT&T has been very slow to the point of not even expanding in it's major markets. We were told two years ago it would be any day now and still nothing. I wouldn't count on being able to have this service.

I had it for a few years but switched back to Time Warner Cable. Our bill was about $180.00. (you really have to watch it. This is not the amount they told me my bill would be. ) We were just on the edge of the coverage area so we were only able to watch and record two shows at a time not 4 like they advertise. We also had to pay for the HD channels and $7.00 a receiver. My bill with our DSL was around $180.00.

With TWC I get hi def for free and my bill comes in around $130 month.

Thanks so much for posting. We also have Time Warner and I was wondering if the bill after the 1st year deal would be about the same. Also the 1st year deal with ATT say other fees apply. I think I will go back to Time Warner and asked for a better deal and see if they can help me. We currently pay $120 for Cable, Interenet, and Phone. If we dropped the phone it would only be a savings of $11. We have ATT wireless phones but only have 700 minutes for landlines. Mobile to mobile is unlimited.

We started with Comcast in Houston and quickly changed to Uverse.
Over the years that we had it, there were many upgrades to go from one tv DVR 2 shows at a time to the multi room DVR with 4 shows at a time. 3 or 4 boxes were included for one price.

Service was pretty good. I had a work at home job that required the Internet constantly. I never had an outage lasting more that an hour or so ( except for the time that the people installing our sprinkler system cut the line in multiple places and AT&T had to come replace the entire line. Within 48 hrs of us calling the line was replaced)

The only problem we ever had with the remotes was that the little plastic cover over the batteries tended to break. By the time we moved, all the remotes had tape across the back.

Where we live now Uverse is not available, so we went with direct TV. It is ok but I wish we could get Uverse. We have to pay a separate fee for each box and the DVR only does 2 shows at a time which is not enough for us on certain nights. Every time it snows or rains hard we loose tv. Our Internet is through our phone company which is not AT&T.

We switched in January mostly to upgrade our internet from what we had before. We use to have DirecTV and a cable modem w/speeds of roughly 3 mbps. Uverse was promising 12 mbps, but we're getting nothing close to that. Our speeds are often only 1 mbps or worse. It's so bad that we're already looking for alternatives (both DH and I work out of the home so the higher capacity is a must for us).

This was us, too, with the Internet service. Long story short, we had DSL through SNET which eventually became AT&T. We now need greater speed but we aren't eligible for the faster DSL products because we aren't close enough to the "central office." We wanted to stay with AT&T because we are attached to our email addresses.

When Uverse became available, I arranged to have it connected. We struggled with very, very slow speeds and frequent disconnects for over two months and had many, many site visits and a router swap (don't get me started on how they MUST send an "inside guy" after each phone call if the "inside guy" who previously visited didn't himself schedule a visit by the "outside guy" when it is needed). Eventually, a dedicated wire was run from the street pole to a dedicated jack in the house for the router. In addition, some type of change was made to ports at the office, and a "tap" (whatever that is) was removed from the lines somewhere along the street poles. The tech said they were able to reduce the virtual number of feet the data traveled through some of these steps, which did seem to help the speed.

After all of this work, we are finally seeing speeds in the 10 Mg range for service that is advertised as "up to 12," and we've only dropped once in the last 3 weeks. One of the many techs told us that we will likely never see higher speeds and we won't be able to go to the faster packages because we are at the very edge of how many feet away we can be from their equipment. The Sales department, of course, doesn't tell you this.

I likely will never switch over our phone and TV to Uverse, but the Internet service should now serve us well enough, I hope, for our browsing and to watch occasional movies when I finally get the TV set up for that.

Best of luck with your decision.

FWIW - we've had Uverse tv/internet for 2 1/2 yrs now. We did recently drop the tv package down to a real minimum level, but we didn't like the cost of tv packages in general, and went with a ROKU box, so this was a choice based on cost as we were happy with our service. We have 12mp speed for the internet, when they installed they told us we were really close to something?? (sorry seriously tech challenged here! but the techs said we were close and would have good speed.) We have always gotten very close to 12 every time I've done a speed test. I work from home, and if the internet glitches at all while I'm working I will lose everything I've done (and not get paid for it) so a constant connection is vital for me. And NEVER once in 2 1/2 years have we lost the internet while I was working. We lost the tv/internet once during a massive storm that had the town out of power for a long time, but during regular storms (thunder or blizzards) we never have any problems with service. It's been 2 1/2 years and I've never had to touch the router once! For a tech challenged person like me that's great!

I have had AT&T, Dish, Comcast...

All of them suck LOL!

That said AT&T at least gets a service rep out the same day I report the issue something Comcast was never able to do so I stick with them. I went through a several month period where things dropped CONSTANTLY and I know EVERY tech in the area. I finally screamed like an idiot and they got both the inside and outside guys here at the same time (a miracle) and they had to quit pointing fingers at each other. After that it worked fine (and it had worked fine for over a year before that)

A reminder to all that AT&T "U-verse" is a completely different animal from "AT&T DSL" service (that has been offered for since the late 90's under such legacy names as SBC, PacBell, and BellSouth),

U-verse, by nature of it's IP setup, is very similar to what CATV companies offer. DSL, on the other hand, is connected to a traditional phone line, and can be a bit slower...

Also, a couple of things to consider:

As U-verse has a unqiue setup, all TV's in the home need to have a box to receive programming (which is an additional 7 bucks a month, per box).

HD service is an additional "flat" $10 per month, regardless of service level or number of TVs connected.

We like it the best out of regular cable, dish and Directv. We love the picture in picture channel scan. We've had it for 3 years or so.
