AT&T Customers...HELP ME PLEASE!

I am not at all a fan of AT&T. We had them for at least 5 years (cell phone service) and when we moved to our new house, and it was time to upgrade our phones, suddenly, they could not longer help us.

I switched to Verizon. Have phone service and DSL through them (cell phones, we recently did away with home phone) and pay for Directv just through Directv. (Verizon does offer a bundle, but, with our package, I don't think it's much of a savings, if any). The great thing is, Verizon gave us an AMAZING deal when I called and told them what AT&T was doing...and we actually get a signal in a lot more places now!

The funny thing is, AT&T swore we couldn't upgrade our phones, but we could keep our service (they told us that because of our location, we cost them too much money...never mind the 5 years we have paid them and rarely used our phones) Anyway, now they keep sending us offers to "come back to us". :confused3

Sorry for the long rant....I just know AT&T's customer service is beyond a joke. Even before our switch, whenever I had a problem, they were never too eager to help. I always just figured it was because they were always looking for new customers, and ones already in a contract, well, they already had my money!

If I were you, I would look into some other options. There is no reason to have to work this hard for a service that YOU are PAYING for....in this economy, you would think keeping customers would be job #1!

That's all well and good, but unlike wireless services, most people in this country are geographically-bound to a single telecom carrier/CATV company.

That said, AT&T and its' operating companies cover the Southeast, Mid-America, Nevada, and California. Qwest covers the Rockies/Upper Midwest/Pacific Northwest, while Verizon has everything from Virginia to Massachusetts.

People in rural areas are served even less, as they may have a small carrier like CenturyTel or Fair Point.

That said, the choice isn't AT&T versus Verizon, but rather AT&T versus the local cable company...

Here's my recommendation for dealing with AT&T:

Get any offers in writing, including all of the install/upfront charges, monthly charges, how long that price is good for, etc.

Otherwise your bill might be much higher than quoted, you'll spend hours on the phone trying to fix it, will end up canceling and filing a complaint with the attorney general for your state...oh wait, that was me...LOL...

Fair warning!

That was me, too! I actually contacted my AG's office a few years ago over a $2.00 monthly fee that they promised to take off for months and never did. The first rep told me it was a required fee for long distance-I knew darn well it was not. I had done my rearch. Two different reps told me they would take care of it, but until I got the AG involved, nothing happened. By that point it was more like $22.00.

I am also having an issue with ATT currently. A few weeks ago I decided to downgrade my phone service from All-Distance to Complete Choice Basic. I called customer service and she encouraged me to do it online. Why, I don't know, although I now have my suspicions-there is no place on the web site to eliminate old services. I asked if she was certain there would be no trouble downgrading; she assured me there wouldn't be. So, I order the lower phone service. However, that's when I noticed that there was no place to actually delete my old, higher phone service. After two weeks, my voice mail, which should have been gone, was still on my phone, so I wrote an email in which I specifically requested no phone calls (I wanted everything in writing.) Wouldn't you know, within two hours, I got a PHONE CALL on my voice mail that said "I know you requested no phone calls, but I just want to know if you are certain about eliminating unlimited long distance." (I had added that since my $2.00 fight.) Um, yeah, I said, and the voice mail should be gone, too. The rep promised to take care of it Monday morning-it is now Friday and I still have voice mail. I also just got my bill, which is even higher than normal because they added my lower phone service but did not eliminate my all-distance. They've got one more chance before the attorney general hears from me again.

And, I wonder how many millions of customers they have still paying the long distance fee that they tell you must have to dial long distance? :confused3

Wow....I feel downright "city-fied" now....LOL

Honestly, we live in a town without even a Wal-Mart...we only have 3 fast food chains in our entire town (can't even call it a city) I just honestly assumed if we had more than one choice, then everyone did! Sorry if I offended anyone.
