I'm going to be in Orlando for 24nights and was thinking of just popping into universal for a couple hours in the week between Christmas and new year.
Because I plan to hit the parks properly on a quiet day or two later in the holiday, I was thinking going at rope drop and going to one of the less popular attractions ie. Not to follow the crowds.
Which attractions do you suggest?

Which park specifically? I'm assuming the studios, but you did say "parks" plural so you may mean both?

Anyway. I'd say ET would be a good one for the studios. Though I do have to say I've never been to the Studios at rope drop so I'm only speculating by thinking the crowds don't flock to it.

For IOA, the water rides tend to open later so Dr. Doom's Fearfall and the Flyers should be good attractions to try while everyone else is heading to WWOHP.

I would say virtually anything besides WWoHP when IOA first opens. I would head straight for the Mummy or Men in Black in the Studios. These are popular but from our experience pretty easy to ride first thing in the morning.

going during Christmas hell week is very crowded.....

if you go then, go early.
be in the line for entrance a good 45 minutes prior to park opening.

there will already be peeps in the park due to early entry for the parry hotter section.

the one attraction at ioa that is less popular is the Poisiden adventure show.
that one will not have the long lines.

at the studios, maybe T2, twister or disaster will not have long lines.

going after the new year period will have less crowds.

Many thanks

The idea is to goto both parks on different days during that week. I will have a 14 day ticket for it.

I'm not planning to stay in the parks all day I just want to do a couple of hit and runs to get the flavour of the parks before we visit properly later in the holiday

In that case, either MIB or The Simpson's Ride in US. They are located at the back of the park. Be sure to take a different way back to the entrance, and pay attention to the attractions you pass, so that you get a feel for how the park is laid out.

For IOA, despite being in TWWoHP, Dragon's Challenge (a rollercoaster) could be a good choice. You'll have to pass through 2 lands (Suess Landing/Lost Continent or Marvel Island/Jurassic Park) to get to Dragon's Challenge. Be sure to complete the loop around central lagoon so that you traverse through all of IOA's lands.

Many thanks, yes that was part of my plan, try and do a ride if possible but mainly get the lay of the land(s) work out whats there plus show the kids why we are going at a quieter time :-)

If you are going to be in the area for 24 nights I would not choose that week to go. Maybe you can go the week before Christmas of the week after New Years but if you have that many days I would try to choose a less busy evening.

I personally wouldn't go that week either but thats the cards I'm dealt with, the idea is just to get a fix when we arrive (29th Dec). Try and do a ride or 2 (though we'd be happy just to soak in the atmosphere) then when the crowds die down in the 2nd week of Jan do a full day there. We will be only 20mins walk from Univesal.

We are trying to mix both the theme park holiday(Thrills) with the other attractions (calmer) central Florida has to offer to suit the whole family. And the challenge that gives me ensuring everyone has a good time and not too warn out.

So my original question still stands:
What are the rides or shows that don't attract people when the rope drops/gates open?

Many thanks to you all.

At IoA, just about anything would be OK except HP and at the Studios...Rockit, Despicable Me and Transformers (which will be open when you visit) will command most visitors right off the bat. Anything else should be fine.

Does that help?
