At Poly: 1st floor? What is the GCH??

At the Poly.... I'm going to make my room request (thanks to seeing all of your posts!) and was wondering if I need to ask for 1st or 2nd floor? I think I'd rather be on the 1st- any reason why not?

Also, after reading the posts about what building to stay in, alot of you said you'd like to be near the great ceremonial house....what exactly is that and why is it good to be close? Is that something I'll be going to alot?

Also, when I request my building can I give them a 2nd choice?

The Great Ceremonial House is where the lobby, restaurants and gift shops and monorail access are. I believe most of the building do not have balconies on the 2nd floor. You can give them as many requests as you want, just be aware that these are just requests and are not garanteed. Try to keep them down to a minimum to increase your chances.

The Great Ceremonial House is the main building at the Polynesian. It houses the restaurants, check-in, monorail stop, gift shops, etc. Some people like to be nearby because they are closer to the mug refill station and other restaurants as well as the monorail. There is no building that is more than a few minutes walk to the GCH.

As to your question regarding the first floor request. It is really a matter of preference. The only drawbacks are (a) privacy and (b) critters. When on the first floor, everyone who passes the building has a view of your room and/or patio. Some people feel a greater sense of privacy on the other floors. The critters are only bothersome if you do not enjoy ducks and bunnies. They wander freely about the resort and, due to guests feeding them, tend to wander near the patio areas. The ducks often leave presents on the patio, but the mess is generally cleaned by mousekeeping or the rain. You should remember that not all 2nd floors have a balcony--some buildings do, others do not.

The Great Ceremonial House is the main building of the Polynesian where you would check-in and there are some shops on the 1st and 2nd floor, along with Ohana and Kona Cafe. That is also where the Monorail station is.

As for which building you should request, my family and I have not stayed at the Polynesian before and when we do in December we are staying in a Garden View Club Level room and those are in the Hawaii building, so we don't need to request a certain building.

We had a first floor room in the Samoa building that was very nice. I liked having the patio, if we moved our chairs a little bit out, we could see the fireworks. Also, the kids could play right there in the grass and we could sit and watch them.

For our Disneymoon we had the 2nd floor (Hawaii). We had a family with a few small children above us and like clockwork, 6:30am everyday, we heard the track meet they were having above us. That was the only draw back.

I would request the 1st floor. We really enjoyed being able to walk out onto the beach from our room instead of going outside, around, etc. Yes, you will be spending a lot of time in the Great Ceremonial House (GCH). This is where all of the restaurants, shops, galleries, etc., are located along with the check-in/out desk, concierge and lounge.

I think many people w/ young children prefer the patio for this reason! Like having a little back yard to play in!

the main pool is right outside the GCH, so it is convenient, but the grounds are beautiful, we stayed in Tahiti, the furthest, and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.
