At OKW; need router help

I need help from anyone who has been successful using a router in a refurb 1BR at OKW. I've never had a problem using my router here before, but it won't work this time. I plugged the ethernet cord directly into my laptop first to be sure it was working; no problems. Then I plugged the ethernet into the router-laptop connects to router, but I can't access the internet. I called the support number but the guy told me as long as the ethernet works in the laptop, they won't help with anything else. The ethernet cable is short and it's on the table between the couch & loveseat....VERY inconvenient.

I'll post some pictures of the refurbished unit soon. The designer needs to be fired!!! There is way too much turquoise...everything is the same darn color. The ugly chair now has an ottoman. The one thing I thought I'd hate but don't is the wood-look floor. I'm not sure what it's made of, but it's definitely nicer looking than any of the pictures I've seen. What really surprised me is it isn't noisy at all. The roman shades are a pain to open & close. They work on this weird pulley type thing that takes forever to get them open or closed. I love the new lifeguard chair lamp in the living room, but like most of the rest of the decor, it's turquoise & looks more like it belongs at the BCV than at OKW.

If anyone can help with the router problem, I'd sure appreciate it.

Have you used this router before with this laptop? Does the router have security enabled? When I brought my router from home to BWV 2 weeks ago, I just plugged the ethernet to the router and my laptop picked up the signal and I was on. My friend had to search for the signal and I had to give her my password before she could get on.

Yes, I've used this router at OKW and other places with no problems. My laptop is definitely connected to the router....just not able to use the internet.

what kind of router? Linksys

Inexpensive Belkin that I use whenever we're at a hotel that doesn't have wireless. It's not the one I use at home, but I did check it last week to be sure it still worked on my home network.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them tomorrow when I'm not so exhausted. It makes no sense that what used to work at OKW won't anymore.

Your wording is a little ambiguous to me. Are you using the router so you can have a wireless connection? I'll assume that you are. Is the power supply working with the router? Are the green/yellow lights on? Did you click the wireless icon in the system tray (I'm assuming your using a Windows-based notebook) to search for available networks? Disney has a massive wireless network which your wireless card will pick up but, because they are encrypted, you can't use. When you do the search for available networks you should see the name of your router and select it. Enter the password if it requests one. You should be okay.

Now, if the wall connection is bad you can try the one behind the nightstand next to the bed--the one with the phone. Usually there is a hub mounted on the wall that has a couple of additional Ethernet ports. It's not convenient to locate but we've found that they are more reliable than the ones that are out in the open. The latter tend to be subjected to the normal traumas of people tripping over the cables and pulling them out without pinching the plug which tends to undermined the connection. Good luck.

My laptop is connected with a wireless connection to my router, not to any other wireless connections that might be available in the area. All the lights are working on the router. When the ethernet cable is plugged directly into my laptop, everything works. When I plug the ethernet cable into the router-nothing. I know how everything is supposed to be connected; I've used the exact same laptop & router at OKW before with no problems. Since the refurb, there is only one place to access the internet port and that is in the living room between the sofa & loveseat.

When we there one time the signal from Disney Company was so strong I had to go into preferences and block it so we could use our router without interference. I hate to hear that they've removed the additional hubs. They were a life saver for us. I have had to uninstall and reinstall or a repair install to get the thing to work correctly. Windows is inherently unstable, though it is getting better.

Does your laptop work plugged directly in? It should. If not, see the last paragraph below.

Go to Linksys.com (plug your laptop straight into the HSA port) and and make SURE you have the latest firmware. I found the subnetting very unusual at OKW last spring and it about drove me crazy for an hour or so and I am a network professional. I make a LIVING and own a company that does it 25+ years. BTW, I carry an old WRT54GL with me (all WRT54Gxx are for all intents and purposes the same for purposes of this thread).

Once I upgraded my Linksys to the newest firmware, it worked fine. Some of the Linksys routers firmwares and some of the 3rd party replacements like SVEASOFT don't properly support anything but a 24 bit mask. I know. Way TMI. Just try it.

Also, there was a port in our 1BR that looked like a HSA connection beside the couch. After 30 minutes of total frustration, I discovered that wasn't what it was at all. No one has yet to be able to tell me what it really was. The REAL HSA port was over by the table in the kitchen on the counter on the wall. Make sure you're plugged into the right place. Sometimes, it's the simplest of things. Never dismiss the obvious. ;)

Shadeaux,
I am a networking dummie but I had a similar problem at BWV in October. I have used my Airport Express and my laptop at BWV many times with no problems whatsoever, but this time the direct ethernet connection worked but the AE only worked intermittently. I tried lots of things, including checking for firmware updates but never solved the problem. I will be curious to see if I have a similar problem when we are at BWV in a few weeks. Being tied to an ethernet cable is cumbersome. Good luck!

I hope you got it working.... I only use my Iphone as a wifi connection anymore while on vacation.

I used my iPhone but on 3G because the Wi-Fi was not working properly. It didn't bother me too much. It is a pain to have to login to the network every time you turn on your phone.

Try the ethernet port above the counter near the dining table. That's the one I've always used.

I was able to use my iphone with my router last time we stayed at OKW, but this time I'm having to use the 3G connection, which btw, is a much better signal than it was last year at OKW.

I was just going to say this was the problem at OKW last week. Once I plugged into the right connection (as described above) I had not problem. Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

Yep, both of our laptops work fine plugged in.

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions. I have a mobile broadband device that I'll use if my husband has his laptop connected via the ethernet cable. He just told me that when he plugged his laptop in this time, it came up with the acceptance page. Yesterday neither of us got it when we plugged in but it still worked. I'm wondering if that has something to do with the router not working. Doesn't make sense, but then neither does a lot of computer related stuff! ;)

I'm plugging the ethernet cable that is on the table between the sofa & loveseat directly into the router. That cable is plugged into the black box thingy on the wall. There is no longer a cable in a bag in the closet. It's now located in a connector thing on the table. Not sure how to describe it, but I've seen them before at other hotels. It's basically a thing that holds the cable in place so it doesn't fall down behind the table. LOL, I'm sure my description is as clear as mud!
