At my wits end, Sam won't sleep!*Update p2*

My 1st thought was ear infection. Hope he is feeling better soon.

Well I felt like a first time mom today! I took Sam to the Dr and his ears look perfect. No problem there. It's just his 4th tho front tooth that is giving him pain. When it comes in (hopefully soon!) this will be tooth #6.

After what kadaten said, I'm dreading the molars!

So hopefully the tooth will come in soon and we can all get some rest!

Mosmom, how old was Elliot when you started this ritual?

Thanks everybody!

No need to feel like a first-timer....it's always best to rule out anything bad! I've done it many times and I'm sure we'll be there again....

Be afraid....be very afraid....of those molars!! Something else that helps if they're old enough or if you can handle the mess or if you can do it outside....popsicles! You know....the kind in the sleeve....well they practically just crumble when you bite them so they're ok for little ones usually....well the cold will ease the throbbing a bit....it's just SO messy! If it's nice enough outside, put him in old clothes, go outside, and give him a popsicle....he'll love it and hopefully it'll numb up those gums a bit! We always had the teethers around but DS lost interest and just dropped them....but he never loses interest in popsicles....

I'm happy to hear Sam doesn't have any ear problems! I've been sitting here thinking of when we started doing this and even asked DH. I think it was around 7 or 8 months because he was getting some teeth in at that time and DH remembered some other stuff going on at the time that helped me put a timeline on it.

I think when we do this, it helps him relax about bedtime. It even makes bedtime a little fun. It also eases us out the door while we are saying goodnight. I always tell him I'll be right outside the door if he needs me and I say 'goodnight' on the other side of the door so he knows that I'm still there even though he can't see me.

I know it may sound hokey but I think it really helped us with E's bedtime. He still had his moments, but it definitely reduced them and makes for a nice tradition in the meantime.

Having him take a warm bath with lavender soap will help calm him, also :) That always worked for Maddy.

Glad to hear Sam is okay! My DS, 9 months on April 2nd, doesn't have a single tooth yet...and from what you've said I'm not looking forward to it! DS has been chewing and drooling A LOT more than normal lately, so I'm assuming the tooth is coming...he's still sleeping well...keeping my fingers crossed!

Hope little Sam's tooth comes in soon so y'all both can get some rest!:teeth:

Thanks for the good ideas everone! I like the popsicle idea. It will be summer and then we can throw him in the baby pool!

skuttle, I haven't seen a recent pic of your DS, he's so cute! Teething is no fun but better than a cold.

Sonya I just have to tell ya- your son is about the cutest thing I have ever seen....... I love to see your posts so I can see his picture in that basket! I yelled to my dh the other night, "come see this baby!" LOL he thought he was pretty cute too!

There is another possibility for the crying, especially where you said that he would stiffen and scream louder if you tried to hold him. It is called "night terrors" and it is basically nightmares that small children get. My kids have both had them and they are a nightmare for the parents also because the kids just cry and scream and carry on and nothing seems to settle them down. The one thing that I have found to be common in all of the episodes my kids have had is being "overtired." If they have missed a nap, have not slept well because of illness, etc. or have played really hard all day or been up later than their normal bedtime, they are more likely to have night terrors. And, just so you know, the reason they will resist you holding them when they are having one is because they aren't actually awake. Their eyes might be open or they seem to be awake, but they really aren't. When that has happened, we usually just try and lay them back down, snuggle them with their blanket, and then leave the room. Usually after just a few minutes, they have gone back to sleep. I hope this helps.
