What do you sell and why? If you don't, what kind of parties do you like to go to and why? I might be staying home with the kids next year and would like to earn a few dollars while earning products. I sold Stampin' Up about 8 years ago but am not into that any longer. Thanks!

Don't do it!!!!!! I was a Mary Kay consultant for 4 years. I was considered successful, yet I still lost money. I found I sank money into marketing . You would be better off with a part time job nights/weekends.

Whenever I get party invites to things like this I don't go. Honestly with the economy I think people steer clear of parties like this in the norm but if you live in a big city where people have extra cash than it might work.
I wouldn't....

I don't sell, and I don't like to go to any of them.

It's really awkward to be friends with people who sell this stuff--I never know if they really want to talk to me or if they just see me as a potential customer/party host/recruit.

I am a consultant with a new jewelry company. I don't really push parties too much, because 75% of the time they aren't worth the time and effort (nobody shows up, or they come but don't buy much). I do facebook parties for people who want to have a party, and vendor shows. I have built up inventory, so I am able to have lots of cash and carry at my events. That definitely helps my sales. People don't like to wait for things. You have to really love what you are selling, though. If you don't love it, it shows, and people won't want to buy it.

I just recently signed up to be a consultant for a relatively new company called Perfectly Posh. They sell naturally based skin care products. It's a quickly growing company and I truly think the products are great.

Thanks for the replies, but as previously stated, I have done this before; I know not everyone enjoys them. I made a few bucks and got lots of free products. There are just way, way more options out there today!

I agree, there are TONS of options!!! I am with Our Heart's Desire. Other than loving their products, the main reason I joined is because they are new, so there aren't a ton of consultants, and the commission is 50%. If you want more info, you can message me :)

I sell Scentsy. Before joining, I steered clear of all MLM companies as well, but I tell everyone all the time that I truly fell in love with the product, the company, the people behind it, and it hooked me immediately.

10 years ago, we lived in an apartment building and watched the one across from us go up in flames. I haven't burned a candle since, but missed the scents. These warmers are the safest I have found and I feel comfortable knowing I can leave them on day and night. My son has played in the wax while it was warming(it heats only to body temp) I am also addicted to their bath and body products! I find most business is done through Facebook and word of mouth. I do some basket parties and a couple of home parties, but I do fine on just individual sales. What I love most is our CEOs. They go above and beyond to take care of their consultants and they truly practice what they preach. They believe wholeheartedly in giving more than they take and their generosity blows me away. They also make it a point to interact as often as possible with the consultants and I have many friends that are very close to their family. Have I gotten rich? No, but I do make enough to help pay a bill or two and I was able to pay for Christmas almost entirely on my commission!

If you have any questions, you can always PM me. I don't push as I hate it being forced on me, but I can give you all the info you need.

I can't tell you how many of these I have gone to and how much I dislike them
Honestly know NO one who likes going
I felt I "had"to attend and buy something I really did not want

I have friends who sell Scentsy and Posh. Those type of products are good for sales because they are consumable and can be used up. I have a friend who used to sell Tastefully Simple. I liked that because you got to eat lots of yummy stuff t the parties and the products were inexpensive.

I think the problem with these multi level marketing "businesses" is that they exploit relationships.
You are told that your family and friends are your natural customers because they will want to help you and you will be able to tell them how much you love the product, however, in all honesty, your friends and family don't like being "sold to", there is always the feeling of obligation to buy from you, and then also they never know of you are hanging out with them because you like them or because you're fishing for a sell.

I USED to sell Usborne Books when I homeschooled my children, and Creative Memories after that. I was able to get a lot of product for both for myself, but it was items I was interested in. I only did 5 book parties in the 3 years I sold them but had orders going in monthly. I did it in order to have the discount on books for the kids.
I only did 1 Creative Memory party, but I had open crops at my house most weekends and sold a lot of items that way. People would stop by and do a couple pages, then I would order to replenish what I sold. I made about $50 each weekend doing that. Once my ex and I split up, I didn't have the space for crops anymore (I had a crop room with its own entrance) and left the company.
Now, I live in the middle of nowhere and although I have been here for 4.5 years, I really do not know anyone. Not interested in parties at all. I know some people that are pushing the 31 parties, but that stuff just seems so expensive for what you get. I can buy baskets/bins at wal-mart and label them myself for MUCH cheaper than what they are asking for their embroidered stuff.

Pretty much every stay at home mom that I know 'does' one of these. I think it is really rooted in our (a woman's) desire to feel important beyond that of her job being a mom.

In any event, my friends that have the most success and make the most money work for Dove Chocolate Discoveries and Beachbody. Both are incredibly annoying with the 24/7 advertising and recruiting, but they're making money, and I am happy for them.

I don't sale anything and couldn't tell you the last time that I was invited to an actual party but I've ordered from many online shows for Facebook friends and family. If it's a product that I want or think I can/will use, then I will buy it. I've ordered Pampered Chef, DoTerra, Mary Kay, and Origami Owl just in the last month.

I know Origami Owl is huge in my area and the moms I know doing it, are doing well. I've been told it has a low start up cost and you get a great kit worth double what you pay. But good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Yikes. Thanks for the harsh psychoanalysis. I'm fairly certain this isn't self esteem related.

One of my friends seems to be doing well with Scentsy. Like a pp mentioned, the nature of the business can bring repeat business. Plus, I find the prices are reasonable so it doesn't feel like a huge burden to keep it going.

31 bags seems to be popular.

One of my friends just had a pink zebra party...it's a scent based product like scentsy but the units melt some kind of scented bead. The beads/scents can be mixed & matched for a more custom fragrance.

They all have Facebook/online parties. My friend who sells scentsy does home parties at peoples houses and every once in a while, she'll invite her friends to her house for a fragrance party.

I like and buy Scentsy. I went to one party for a friend who was helping a friend of hers get started. Now, I just text the consultant when I need something, and she brings it to me. No pressure.

I would recommend you find a product you love, so that you are passionate about it, and then make sure you area/network isn't over-saturated with reps for that product.

I will say I have had several friends be reps for different products, and none have really been successful. In general people are just tired of the concept and would rather buy online at their convenience. There are some exceptions I'm sure, but in my area I don't know what they are.
