At and T has announced that they are doing away with the 2 year contract starting on January 8. I have always kept my phone until it died kind of person. I have a 4S and am completely happy. It meets my needs. I guess next time I update- I will buy out of pocket or use the next plan.

I had planned on updating my daughters next Christmas and then switch to her 5C for myself. Do you think it would be beneficial for me to do this now and get in on the 2 year contract or just wait it out and go with the next plan next Christmas?

About a year ago we upgraded to iPhone 6's. We went from the 2-year contract plan to the full price in installments deal and our bill went down and we got more data.

if you're happy with your 4s(I like mine) why bother upgrading? You can easily switch to a no contract service on that att branded phone.... not 100% sure without looking, but I think straight talk is one of the att phone choices (different branded phones work with different prepaid services) you won't lose any service, you can port(keep) your number, and you will likely pay a lot less.....I just assisted a friend doing this recent;y, it is a simple matter of a new sim card popped in, purchased thru the correct prepaid company. howard forums are a good source of info

Yep, us too. I also like that I can go in any time, pay off a phone, my bill is even lower and the phone is mine to do what I want with it.

Yep. I run st using an AT&T iPhone. Just upgraded from a 4 to a 6 to get lte. Cost $440/year for 5 gb/month of data, unlimited texts and domestic calls.

I think we've stopped doing upgrades through AT&T. We bought our youngest DD a refurbished phone through gazelle.com and it works just fine. No upgrade fee or monthly payment to AT&T and we own the phone. The cost was much cheaper than buying new. For my family, we are convinced that this is the best solution for us.

We are still paying for older DDs "upgrade" for another 10 months from her dropping her phone in water. As the budget-er in the family, its just annoying (for no particular reason) to me. I wasn't aware we could pay it off early.... I'm going to look into that!

Just for clarification, we're talking about the Next plan. I don't know what the options are if you are in a two year contract. (if you did Next there shouldn't have been an upgrade fee, only taxes)

The 4S is very outdated. That would be a good enough reason for me to upgrade.
is it? I still love mine..... it's such a nice little phone.....:rotfl2: I will probably pass it on to my kiddo when I'm done with it,it seems like it will last forever!

We are very light users and use an unlocked AT&T phone on Tracfone. Can be done for about $100 a year if you are mainly in wifi.

That is really cheap. I'm paying around $70 a month not including the phone installment ($31). 3 gb data, unlimited phone & texts. No contract. Are you on a family plan?

No. I've had ST for three years. It's essentially AT&T service for me. If you don't need a subsidized phone it's a great option. I just refilled for a year for $440 but I think that was a special that is over now. It's regularly $495 I believe. Taxes for the whole year were < $8.

Cricket wireless is slightly cheaper but you get less data and I read there was something about the service that wasn't quite as good as ST.

My daughter uses an unlocked AT&T phone at T-Mobile. $30 a month for unlimited text and data and 100 talk minutes a month.

I am looking into switching to ST to save some money on our cell bill. I can get out of my 2 year contract because of the $5 a month increase. Did your friend have to cancel their ATT service first and how soon were they able to connect to ST? I don't want to have any lag time in service.
