assisted suicide.

What happened in the Terri Schindler-Schiavo case? Was that considered assisted suicide? I'm a bit confused on that.

No.
She was not capable of functioning.
She was brain dead.
She did not ask to be given a euthenasia. She had no means of communication. Simply being unplugged from a machine is not the same. Assisted suicide is a decision that is made by the patient first and foremost, and their family as well.

no.
as i've said earlier, AS is only for conscious patients.

terri's husband starved her to death. she wasn't on life support, just a feeding tube. he ordered to have it removed so she would die, so he could get remarried to his new girlfriend.

well would assisted suicide just be from injections or would putting a gun to your head also be considered assisted suicide

Oh okay, thank you for clarifying.

Assisted suicide is a medical term. It is specifically for someone who wishes to be killed when they may not have the means to kill themselves when the time comes.
and when I say killed, I mean injected/ingesting a drug that 'puts you to sleep' like a dog would be.

If I was in intolerable pain day after day, I'd want it. So, I guess that I'm for it.

im all for assisted suicide if the person is in a critical condition and in the hospital and is going to die soon anyway and thinks that this is the best way to go to avoid pain

thankyou for explaining that to me i wasnt really sure what was in the category under assisted suicide :goodvibes ok now that i'm sure what it is i am for it as long as the person is absolutely sure thats what they want and if theyre in that much pain

I have kind of a case by case opinion on the subject. Dr.Kevorkian really just appears to me to be a crazy man, and I think he has helped in way too many assisted suicides. Eight years was not enough in my opinion. Just the way that he kept challenging the government and even videotaping the acts makes me have an awful feeling in my stomach. I would generally believe that terminally ill patients should be allowed the right to assisted suicide after given one month to make sure that's what they want to do. For non-terminally ill patients, I think the wait time should be 5 months minimum. If a person is unconscious (ex. coma) I see there is absolutely no reason to terminate their lives.

I really can't say I'm for this. In the end, someone is taking their own life. It's a hard topic.

Nope. I don't like it. Why end someones life before it is their time? Is it even morally right? I don't think so.

if there is a hell, i think it would be to lay in indescribable pain for a whole month before someone else decided if you had suffered enough to allow you to die.

i've watched a child waste away on life support. they made her heart pump, they made her lungs breathe. her mind was gone. there is no reason at all for her to have to exist like that. let her die.

perhaps if you have ever been in the situation to watch someone you love slowly, painfully die-your feelings would be different.

I watched two of my grandparents die of cancer. My grandma especially was hard because it lasted a month and a half of her just dying before my eyes. I still wouldn't be able to support her ending her life.

Life support is different. That is artificially keeping the body alive, and it would die without that support.

in a situation like that girl was in when you have nothing to live for and she cant enjoy life thats when they should step in with something like assisted suicide but i'm sure her family would rather have her body here. i dont kow in that case assisted suicide sounds like such a harsh word when it sould really mak someone happy

thats not true

If you know that a patient is brain dead, and all of the test prove it, then they can keep the person on life support to keep them 'alive' for organ donation.

I'm all for end of life care, making the person comfortable and giving them the pain medicines they need, however, I don't like that dr. kavorkian (sp?) is ending it prematurely.

Assisted suicide is purely medical.
It's legal in .. Switzerland or Sweden. I can't remember. It's for the teriminally ill who have spoken about it with their loved ones and have all agreed that it's the best. I believe the doctors have the final say in what happens though.

currently, assisted suicide is illegal. dr kavorkian ("the suicide doctor") went to jail for 5 years (i think) for easing the passing of his patients.

Actually, just to clarify, Washington State has legalized euthanasia. (http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2008/11...e-1000-legalizing-physician-assisted-suicide/)

and I'm for it. If I was in terrible pain without end, and knew I wouldn't recover (like my last month with AIDS in a hospital or on my deathbed with cancer) I would ask for it.

actually no. it was harder to watch her not die than to let her die. when you see someone dead, there is closure. they're not hurting anymore, but watchign her was like watching a dead person breathe...

its hard to explain if youve not seen it, and i hope you never have to.

I just wrote a paper for my politics class on this.
I think it should be legal, but I also think you need counciling beforehand to make sure that person is of sound mind.
And there needs to be some regualtions on it as well.
