Assisted living experience?

My mother-in-law is moving into assisted living next week and will be signing paperwork on Monday. Is it customary for these places to ask about assets as well as monthly income? They are asking for the amount in savings accounts, IRA, value of the house, etc. This just seemed kind of invasive as it is month-to-month, no lease, no contract and we live in a state where it is easy to evict, not like California, and this is assisted living apartment-style, not a nursing home. Just wondering if this was standard as this is a whole new thing for us. Thanks!

I've had to put my mother in a memory care unit in two different communities. Neither of them asked for any of that info, guess they just ran a credit check.

When my mother moved into an assisted living apartment, they did not ask about assets but they did make it clear that if she ran out of money, she would have to leave.

Hmmm. Is this a private pay arrangement, or are they billing her medical insurance for services? If medical insurance is involved, then as far as I know it is routine to ask these questions. The costs can be astronomical. Sometimes people need to forfeit their assets in order to pay for their care. That may be what is going on, but I don't know. Jus some thoughts.
