Assault at Fort wilderness

Not really surprising, sad to say. Anyone can park over at DTD, take a bus into FW or any other WD resort, and wander in like any other paying customer. Ride back out when they are done

When we were there, I was 99% positive that 2 groups at the pool were not paying guests.

You have to show an ID to check in, but no ID or room key check
to access the transportation system or any amenity that I came across.

Security was tighter at MK afterhours, had to show roomkeys at every ride after 10pm, although they seemed to stop checking that around 11-11:30

I think there needs to be more resort ID checking, all entry, transportation, pool, campfire etc. I know this will keep some good people out but it will keep some bad people out also.

You don't even have to park at DTD... you know how many people I see park at the overflow lot, unpack all thier coolers and pool gear, then hop on a bus to the Meadows??

It disgusts me that they feel Disney World is thier free place of entertainment. There's certain things that I know are strictly for resort guests. And while I might enjoy the views or the bike riding through the fort, I set my boundries of what I can and can't do. And I would never bring my whole family there just to go swimming.

Unfortantly pervs have started showing up more and more in the theme parks. Disney can do its best to keep them out of the turnstiles, but it's harder when they have no control over access like that. I would hate to see every place turned into a lock down situation. But where do you draw that line of being some place fun for the whole family to feeling like your at a high school in the ghetto that has to go through metal detectors and clear bookbags just to go to school??

just made a post about this didnt see this one. As i said in the post i made i say we just kill him:thumbsup2

I'm in. Where and what time shall we meet?

This just boils my blood. Some people think I am nuts that I worry about my 12 year old son while he's in a public restroom. Well, this is one of the reasons why! There are sickos out there that sit and wait on the innocent and vunerable. (I realize this wasn't exactly the case in this situation.)

I'll be the over protective parent standing outside the men's room while my 12 year old goes in at WDW, and if someone has a problem with it, they can bite my ankle. (Okay, he turned 13 yesterday, so I may just sit on a bench close by.) I'm not an idiot, I know I can't protect my children from everything, but I'll dang sure try my hardest!

I try very hard not to instill my fears in my children and without going into too much information, let me just say that I know from experience, that sexual assault can happen ANYWHERE!

When there's specific "resort guest only" things going on, Disney will check room keys. By 11pm, they had the day guests cleared of that area. Y&B club pool, you have to show your room key to get into the pool area. There's a very unique fencing that goes around it, and CM's that stand at the entrance with the towel boxes. This is to prevent pool hopping. But unless the pools are very very full, they usually don't ask for a room-key at other resorts.

And unfortantly you can't just bann any one without a room-key to the resorts. There's a ton of reasons why other guests visit them, one of them is eating.
We can't blame Disney, they do try thier best. The world just needs to get rid of the sickos.

I thought maybe a 45 but that'd be to quick, then Donnie came up with ball bats,,thats a nice touch,,it's slower, :thumbsup2

I have to agree with checking to see if someone is a guest or not at the pool resorts. Last time at the fort I saw like other people have of people unpacking thier pool gear in the overflow lot and trucking to the medows pool. We were at the pool when We saw a Sh%$ load of people getting off the bus with pool gear. Later talking to someone at the pool, this gentleman was on the same bus and overheard the large group say that they were not even staying at a disney resort. That's bull. I think having a room card would allow people staying at the fort to enjoy thier pool and also help to supervise children from just getting off thier bikes a diving into the pool. Some days you'll be luck to even find one empty chair and you know some people are not paying fort guest. I also believe that news of the new splash zone and slide has made it out and about and like all curious people, they have to check it out.

Aparently, the girl had been in contact with this guy via the internet & told him about the family's plans to vacation at FtW in May. A meeting was arranged between the two of them & this guy actually gave the girl his business card!!!
As bad as this crime is, this at least points to it not being a "random" encounter at the Fort. Don't misunderstand me in that I'm not blaming the girl one bit. But, as the father of 4 girls, if this had been completely random I would worry that much more about them, even in the relatively safe confines of the Fort. I know it can happen anywhere, but in this case this was not random. I take a TINY bit of comfort in that.

On our june trip, we saw two incidences going on that I had wished I had known more about. Once in the internet cafe, a lady was filling out an incident report and she said stuff like "i can't believe this happens at disney" and " i expect this to be handled professionally" and "has this ever happened before here". Then once at the pool, the security people blocked off the cart path behind the new hot tub and wouldn't let anyone pass. They had an older, maybe 40ish man, standing there ready to be handcuffed. I was trying to hear what he did but couldn't make it out. there were a ton of suits and security there. Now seeing this, it all makes me wonder.

I don't see why they can't issue bracelets for use at the pool.

Until they make this crime a class A Felony and give these sickos 10 years in prison they will continue. It amazes me that when they finally catch them they admit that they have done this type thing many other times.

I don't know the answer but there has got to be some way we can protect these children from making themselves accessible to these predators. Maybe a parental lock on the internet for anyone age 16 and under.

The problem is that until they ARE caught, no one knows they're a predator except their victims - who may or may not talk about it. So until they hit some kind of database where you could maybe implement facial recognition software to keep them at bay, they can be wherever you are - store, school, theme park, vacation resort, anywhere. And until we know who they are, we don't know who to keep the kids away from either. I do believe their should be harsher punishments, especially for first time offenders. Get them off the street right away and keep them in jail where they belong.

Seems like she had a fairly active part in the situation.
Parents, keep an eye on your teenage girls.

That's what I thought. This incident won't make me feel less safe at Disney, just less safe when my DD's reach that age. :rotfl:

I agree with you Alisa......I also agree that the girl had more of an active role in this thing.....kind of funny she knew the guys name, and that they had eachothers number.......hmmmmm

We were at the Fort on the dates in question. My son and his GF spent a lot of time at the pool and hot tub. I will have to show him the story and see if he may have noticed something creepy going on.

The link devores posted above is from the St. Pete Times, which is my local newspaper. That article adds a few details to this sad story. It turns out that the victim is from Clearwater, which is the town next to the one in which I live.

This is a sad, sad story. A couple of things about this story bother me:

- The man is 29, the girl is 12. Even though the story suggests that the girl may have encouraged the man, or led him to believe that she was older, there is no way that a 29 year old man should have anything to do with a 12 year old. There is no chance that this miscreant could have thought for a minute that he was dealing with an adult.

- It sounds like the 12 year old was alone at the pool and at a laundry room with the miscreant. Where were her parents? Hello? She is 12!

- This creep could have gotten away with the crime had he not given the 12 year old his phone number. And, the poor girl didn't initially report the crime, so it is a wonder that the guy got caught. I wonder if he was a camper, or what he was doing there in the first place.

-Did anyone read the comments to the story on the link posted by devores? We live in a sad, sad world. :(

-The St. Pete Times was kind enough to print the perp's home address. If he gets out of jail on bail, he will need to watch his back and sleep with one eye open.

This just goes to show you that bad stuff happens everywhere. Even at the Fort. I will be watching my DD's extra careful from now on.

I agree whole heartly. The perp was from Deltona, FL, less than an hour from Disney. This makes me think that maybe he was there "scoping out" possible prey. He could have just been a camper, but where was his buddies or family while he was preying on this girl?

And I have a 13 year old daughter. There is no way he could have thought she was any older than she was.

This story coupled with the ones recently about the pervs feeling up children at the water parks is why I stated we need to keep a better on our children while in Disney. People tend to think Disney is impervious to these kinds of things. Well, 3 news stories of perverts hanging around Disney preying on little kids. Ill be sure to take more precautions while at Disney.

BTW, Disney now has local LEOs stationed at the wave pools at both BB and TL. So they know they have a problem as well.

On one of the links in an article Donna posted to another thread, it said that the girl had told the perv that she would be at Fort. So it doesn't appear that he was cruising around looking to score at the Fort. It appears to have been a somewhat prearranged meeting. She had apparently befriended him on the internet.

I have an 11 year old DD and we were at the FW pool that same weekend. DD and I have had a talk about this and she told me that she thinks she may have met this girl. Just scares the you know what out of me!
