My FIL uses a cane to walk (he has the handicapped permit thing) and we would like to stay at a Calypso building so he doesn't have to walk far. How do I get a "preferred" building without paying the preferred price?

I doubt that it's possible, but you could always try. There are handicap assessible rooms throughout the resort not just in the preferred rooms and on all floors. We have been put into them many times because they are usually king bed rooms. They do have a complimentary wheelchair available at most resorts that you can borrow throughout your stay which requires a cc deposit in case it's lost or stolen. If you find out more information on this issues, please share with us. I would be curious to know if it's possible. I have heard of others getting a frig for free when medication is involved.

We talked FIL into using a wheelchair (at least part of the time) when we are at the parks, but I don't think he will want to use it at the hotel.

Since there are handicap rooms all over the resort, you'll have to pay the preferred price to stay in Calypso. Really isn't any way around it.

We are going to ASsp in dec and staying in a handicapped barrior free room, we have requested a perferred room building (not paying extra for it just asking) hope we get it. At the AS's there are 2 types of hanicapped rooms. the first one is barrior free, it has the king size bed and a roll in shower, the second one has the 2 double beds and a tub with grab bars. I would just request from the 2 preferred buildings and hope you get it, you might have better luck if you already have a handicapped room.:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Call them 5 days before arrival, and tell them the situation. I did this for my DH who had Hip problems at the time, and they gave me a 1st floor room, building 6 ASSP, and I DID NOT pay Extra! I also sent a Fax!;)

My guess is it would just depend if a handicap room is open and what CM/room assignor decides at that moment.
To me that's like wanting a waterview for the price of a standard view. And sometimes guests get the upgrade without paying the extra $10 per night; sometimes they don't.
