Ask Me Anything Game: Ask JohnnySharp2 Anything

These threads have been extremely light-hearted up until now, but I'm enjoying "getting to know you" even if it has had everyone in tears! :rotfl: That's the whole point of them, after all (props again to little Matt).

OK, so I haven't posted a question - I was going to ask Josh's age, but Matt beat me to it.

Thank you, Thank you. Everyone Worship Me! :rotfl:

Great minds think a like! :goodvibes And hey wait a minute, I'm mini matt? Does that mean that Matt is my... father?! :scared1: Wait.... and carol is my mother........

Woah DIS Boards Affair of the centuary!!! :lmao: You should of tightened his leash Deb!!! :rotfl:

Anyone, back to questions......

What did you get for christmas this year???

OK, I can't think of anything right now; was trying to save my post!!! :lmao:

ok then I'll be brave although will probably electrocute myself by crying into the keyboard...

at what point did you know Josh was 'different' and how did you know?
at what point was it confirmed and how did you feel?
did you feel guilt or anger that this had been thrust upon you?
We know Joshua can't speak and that must be frustrating at times, is it an impossibility that he will ever speak or is it that he 'chooses' not to?
we know you get frustrated by comments from others that he's too big for a pushchair when you're in WDW but how does the general public show their ignorance and if you could teach us all one lesson here in how to behave around children with severe autism what would it be?

(sorry thats so long and I hope its ok, I just feel we can all learn something from people as brave as you two  you know we all love and admire you here)

Hi Carol, :)

The first 2 questions are sort of connected.
We sort of knew from the age of 2 that there were possible problems with his speech, at an early age he was making the sort of noises that all young babies make, but these never developed into resembling words as such.
He did have tests and a few home visits through our GP but we never really got any indication that it could be a permanent thing until we actually found out in January 2001. Joshua had what is known as a 'febrile convulsion' whilst he was ill with a virus - caused by his temperature shooting up quickly - something a lot of children have suffered from we were told.
It was during the tests and the time spent in hospital that it became clear from the Doctor's examinations that Joshua was not developing as he should have, to be honest I think we kind of already knew to a degree.
Not long afterwards he was diagnosed as Autistic.
Unfortunatley also in 2003 he was diagnosed with Epilepsy, and for a period of a year or so did have fairly regular convulsions. Thankfully he has only had 1 in the last 3 years, just a shame it was on our flight to Orlando last year. The drug he takes twice daily manages to control it and to be honest we don't even think about it now.

I don't know about guilt/anger Carol, we as parents just get on with it, when the Autism/Epilepsy came together we did sort of think "why us" for a while, who wouldn't.
The hardest part was the school bit, Joshua goes to a special school but our 1st visit was a humbling/upsetting experience, to be honest there are a lot of children there who are physically disabled. In many ways we feel we are lucky, Joshua is fully mobile, very happy, playful and has such a cheeky little character too.
The one thing we do find hard is watching (we rarely do) the old camcorder holiday tapes when Joshua was very young, naturally at that stage we wouldn't know he would never actually talk, so in a way they can be quite upsetting, although enjoyable too!

Will he ever talk, I honestly don't think he will , it's highly unlikely he will I fear - he does make sounds and can communicate in many other ways.
We have been offered a 'brain scan' which reveal the cause/causes but as it would be a hospital trip where he would have to be put to sleep we don't want to put him through it, especially as he won't benefit in any way.
I sometimes think he finds it a bit frustrating at times, but he does find other ways of telling us things, and to be honest we speak to him as if he could talk anyway.
He definitely understands a lot of what we say to him, however it's not just a speech thing it's 'severe learning disability' too.

I think the frustration from other's comes from a lack of understanding really, Autism is such a broad subject and there are so many types it's understandable there are a few 'grey areas'.
To be honest I guess the difficulty comes partly because Joshua is perfectly mobile, in theory he should be able to walk around the theme parks, but his Autism just prevents it - in the same way as visiting a restuarant can be difficult too.
I think the ignorance is just the looks we get really, you know people are thinking "that child shouldn't be in a pushchair" etc, you just have to blank it out really...I mean now we have a mini wheelchair, not sure what the reaction will be when he gets out of it and walks! Do I care.....NO!
The teaching bit? good question, I mean you cannot tell Joshua has Autism, I guess that's where the reaction of others get's a bit muddled perhaps.
I think just be patient, that's one thing we have to be, if you see someone is disabled in anyway just show them some respect - it's not an easy life with a disabled child

The thing that really hits me hard is will he ever be able to go out for a pint with me, or out to the match with his mates? The things we all take for granted I suppose.

Thanks for the kind words, it's nice to have so many good friends - what was I thinking about when I quit the boards a while back (what a plonker!).

Hi Johhny, just popped over to say Hi to partner in crime for the week, are you having fun yet ?

Would also like to add that Jules and I have got quite emotional about your answers also. I am sure the Mrs will be hounding you this week !

Hi , hope you are enjoying it too - it is getting a bit emotional isn't it, guess it was inevitable.

Let it be said though we do feel lucky to have a lovely son, that is the main thing.

Carol, those are really good questions!

One more question about Josh from me. How old is he? That's curiousity for ya.. :)

OK, time to break the sad mood with some silly questions!

If it was april fools yesterday, and no-one really bothered to pull pranks, does that make us fools?

I am currently letting my cousins (my real life ones) play with shotguns. Are you shocked?

What if I told you if it was a video game? :lmao:

If Cow tipping is impossible why do so many people claim to do it?

Does cow tipping qualify as trying to wake a pudgey sibling up in the morning?? :rotfl:

If the answer is 42, what's the question?

And the BIG question: If you were a Pokemon what would you be?

Hi Matt,

Joshua is 10 years old, November 8th is his birthday.

No - I think not making April fools makes us sensible, either that or we just forgot all about it (like I did).

I am shocked yes, they must be toy's?

ah yes - very funny young man (you had me for a minute)

Cow tipping - what's that Matt?

see above

The number of posts on this thread! good answer and clever too eh?

Oh no, I KNEW you would ask me this, I could find out but honestly I couldn't name one of them I am afraid (sorry that has you lost for words I expect).

I'm just popping in to say a big thank you to Johnny for talking so candidly about Joshs autism a an even bigger sorry to all those of you (and me) who are crying.

Hi Johnny:)

Ok here are a few to get going with:

I always love looking at your pictures of Josh, however are we ever going to see one of you??:goodvibes

Do you read a lot and if you do what type of books are your favorite??

If you were invisable for an day, what would you do??

Have you always been a Liverpool supporter???

Do you have a favorite Actor/Actress??

Have you ever met any other Dissers??

:goodvibes :goodvibes

Johnny, I'm looking forward to reading your answers about Josh - just call me nosey ;) . I'm especially intrigued about his age. I'd always assumed he was quite young (from the photos in your signature), but you've mentioned that his first trip was in 1997.

These threads have been extremely light-hearted up until now, but I'm enjoying "getting to know you" even if it has had everyone in tears! :rotfl: That's the whole point of them, after all (props again to little Matt).

Hi Deb,

We took him to Florida at a very early age, he actually went with us in 1996 so it was his 2nd adventure in 1997.
Guess the first couple of times he was a bit too young, think it was on his first trip that I went out to start the car and get the air-con on before Julie and Joshua came out of the hotel.
Started the car, go out locked the doors (one of them switches that locks all 4), and shut the driver's door....car engine running, only 1 key and that was in the ignition with the engine running. Cue a $50 locksmith bill.
So not a good start to his trip's abroad.

I know they have been light-hearted and I am sure this will be too, although a few hankies have been required so far. To be honest it's nice and a compliment to everyone on here that I can talk so freely about things, guess that's why the DIS is such a good place. What WAS I thinking about when I 'retired' in December?

what sport do you play, if none, which sport would you like to be really good at?

same question for musical instruments?

what, in your opinion, is the bravest or most 'worthy' job someone can do?

Hi Carol,

I am a pretty decent snooker player, and used to play in a couple of leagues off very low handicap's.
Although I rarely play these days.

I was quite good at the 'triangle' at school! Seriously, none whatsover I am afraid.

I have always thought that Fireman were really brave, I have a friend who is one, they are dedicated people who put themselves at risk in order to help others.

What did you get for christmas this year???

erm, several DVDs, a couple of Tommy Bahama shirts (Julie bought them secretly in August on our holiday), Steven Gerrard autobiography, Dunhill cologne, a BMW rollerball pen (from Josh), some Adidas Y trainers....I think!

I'm just popping in to say a big thank you to Johnny for talking so candidly about Joshs autism a an even bigger sorry to all those of you (and me) who are crying.

No - it's me who should thank you for listening, please don't cry (well maybe just a bit), we are lucky to have a lovely son. :grouphug:

Not a question Johnny, just wanted to say you are awesome. I am too moved to think properly about questions.

Hi Sue,

Ha Ha - hmm not sure I have many (any), I am usually behind the camera and Josh is so much better on camera than me, he is such a poser!

To be honest I don't read at all hardly, I have a couple of football autobiographies that I read from time to time but that's it.

Great question, I would go to Josh's school and see what he gets up to during the day, to be able to watch him without him seeing me would be something to cherish...mainly because if he did see me he would want to come home!
To see him playing with his friends in the playground and also in class would be great I think.

I have supported Liverpool since I was about 10, my cousin did so I wanted to too, I have had a season ticket for nearly 20 years now and never miss a home game.
Joshua ignores me when I come home (for 10 minutes or so anyway), it's like "where have you been all day".

No never, not yet anyway. :)

Johnny

In your opinion, who is the greatest footballer ever???

For my sins apart from Cardiff City, I have supported West Brom for about 15 years, do you think we will go back up again this year??

Do you prefer Red or White wine???

Whats your favorite take away meal???

Tell me something about yourself (within reason;) ) that I would never know.

:goodvibes

Hi Sue,

Kenny Dalglish, mainly becuase he used to play for Liverpool, was a great player and my dad once chatted to him at the club car park! Very nice bloke.

I think West Brom have a good manager, some experienced players and will definitely make the play off's.
After that it's a bit of a lottery, I don't think there is much to choose between the teams - with a little luck I think you could yes.

Red - but don't drink wine too much. Earlier in my younger days I was known for drinking red wine like Vimto though!

I like a dish from our local chinese, but it's called 'American Chicken', chicken breast, chips, peas, pineapple fritter, battered banana and gravy - I am a very fussy eater Sue.

I am slim, blue eyes, about 6 foot tall, light brown hair, likes wearing nice clothes , handy with a lawnmower, like to keep my car nice and clean, used to have a strange fascination with watches, have over a dozen of them, a bit of a poser on holiday and like to wear a nice silk Tommy Bahama silk short/shorts at night time.

Hi Johnny, I just have to say that you are on inspiration for us all. I love your upbeat outlook on life and have to say that your son is just the cutest, I can see why you feel so lucky.
Our family have had a similar experience, my brother's daughter was born about a month ago and had to stay in hospital for quite a while. She basically didn't seem to want to wake up and was very floppy. The doctors were getting worried, luckily she did stert to get better but she hadn't cried. I was sat with my borther and he said I would give anything to hear her cry, I really had to hold back the tears. I'm pleased to say that she is home now and has finally found her lungs. There is still a long way to go as we don't know if she may have any problems but we are staying positive and taking it day by day.

ok, a question for you: Are you a romantic person? How did you propose to your wife?

Thanks for the positive comments Emma, very much appreciated.
I hope your brother's dear daughter is keeping well.

I guess I am kind of romantic, but since Joshua takes up so much of our time and we both work full time that we take each other for granted most of the time - something that is unavoidable really.
I proposed not too long after we got together actually, Julie was just coming to the end of a relationship with someone else and it was clear she wanted to be with me instead.
We got engaged on New Year's Eve 1989 and were married in June 1990.
It wasn't a 'getting down on one knee' job or anything, it was kind of we knew we would be together and it just sort of happened.

Good Morning Johnny. I know you aren't going to see this until a long time later, but it must be morning somewhere in the world? :lmao:

1) Guess why I am up so early? (No the answer isn't to ask you questions!)

2) Do you and Auntie Julie have a Song that you share?

3) I have been meaning to ask, but what is your Avatar? Being a Youngin I am not used to black and white films... :rotfl:

Cow tipping - what's that Matt?

Just so you know Johnny, Cow Tipping is literrally the tipping over of cows. They do it in America mostly..

Very Clever! :lmao:

No it's OK, many people have said the same thing. I am more shocked when people DO answer the question! :rotfl:

What WAS I thinking about when I 'retired' in December?

Hey you just asked yourself a question!

I'd like to hear the answer to that one! :thumbsup2
